robc04_1 -> What do you automate? (easy to fill template included) (3/20/2013 12:39:04 AM)

Hi there,

I recently reviewed Distant Worlds and it didn't quite grab me. I admire it for what it does. There are so many ways to play it that I thought it could be helpful to others (and interesting to me) to see what other players automate. If this ends up being helpful with a lot of info maybe it can be stickied. Feel free to add comments about why you chose these settings and what issues you may have with them. I have a blank template that can be copied into your post so you don't have to do the busywork. Thanks for participating!

Please fill in with the following answers:
manual (manually control everything)
suggest (control but get AI suggestions)
automate (automate fully)
empire (automate and use empire settings for further control

Colony Tax Rates: automate
Colony Population Policies: automate
Ship Design: automate & manual
Troop Recruitment: automate
Fleet Formation: manual
Research: manual
Character Locations: manual
Colonization: manual
Ship Building: manual
Intelligence Missions: manual
Attacks Against Enemies: manual
Sending Diplomatic Gifts: manual
Treaties: manual
War and Trade Sanctions: manual
Colony Facility Building: manual
Constructor Ships: automated
Explorers: Automated

Comments / Explanation:
I automated the colony tax rates and population policies because I didn't want to have to monitor each colony's population and adjust the settings. Since I was just starting I didn't fully understand the ramifications of the population policy settings. I automated the ship design, but I did create some addition designs. I automated constructor ships because I never really needed to pay attention to mining resources. I automated exploration because I found it too tedious but that caused other problems. It made me feel kind of detached from finding colonies and other things in the galaxy. Periodically checking the colonizable planet list didn't feel as exciting as discovering things myself. Would me nice if you could configure the game to put up a message when a colonizable planet, research location, etc was found. I don't like watching games play themselves so I tried to control as much as possible. The attack alerts became overbearing, especially with the whack a mole pirates that keep reappearing. I felt I needed to check in on each combat when I was attacked to make sure my ships were victorious. That started to get overwhelming as it was happening constantly.

taxes and population mostly :)

Colony Tax Rates: Automate
Colony Population Policies: Manual
Ship Design: Manual
Troop Recruitment: Manual
Fleet Formation: Manual
Research: Manual
Character Locations: Manual
Colonization: Manual
Ship Building: Manual
Intelligence Missions: Manual
Attacks Against Enemies: Manual
Sending Diplomatic Gifts: Manual
Treaties: Suggest
War and Trade Sanctions: Suggest
Colony Facility Building: Suggest

Comments / Explanation: I haven't played in a few months, and don't remember what "Colony Population Policies" but I'm pretty sure I do it manually. I have a number of things on Suggest, but I rarely take their advice! I also have gas/mining base building automated because I find that way too tedious.

Strictly speaking manual everything.

Comment: I leave most things on suggest until they annoy me too much, but I do it for laughs about what a cpu player would do rather than as advice.

One thing I don't see in your list is construction ships.

Bingeling -> RE: What do you automate? (easy to fill template included) (3/20/2013 9:46:17 AM)

It depends on what kind of game I want. Usually I leave a lot automated to keep things interesting.

The two I don't want to leave to the AI, so I probably should... is.

Ship Building: Manual
Attacks Against Enemies: Manual

Colony Tax Rates: automate
Colony Population Policies: manual
Ship Design: automate
Troop Recruitment: automate
Fleet Formation: manual
Research: manual
Character Locations: automate, but will move them around when I feel it's necessary/worthwhile
Colonization: manual/suggest
Ship Building: manual
Intelligence Missions: suggest
Attacks Against Enemies: suggest
Sending Diplomatic Gifts: manual
Treaties: suggest
War and Trade Sanctions: manual
Colony Facility Building: suggest
Constructor Ships: manual/suggest
Explorers: manual/suggest

Comments / Explanation:

Most of the stuff I place on "automate" are things I either have no desire to micromanage, and/or I feel it helps give the AI-controlled empires a chance to keep up (such as ship design).

The things I have on "suggest" are stuff I actually like to control manually when/where possible, but it's useful to get a reminder every now & then. Also useful for in the late-game when your empire is big and you have a zillion things to keep track of.

Research: auto
Character Locations: manual
Colonization: Suggest
Ship Building: Adjust
Intelligence Missions: mix
Attacks Against Enemies: manual
Sending Diplomatic Gifts: manual

Constructor Ships: auto MOSTLY. I do have one or two around for my own use.
