Is it worth expending the time and a/c to go after low capacity targets? I was thinking that maybe if you could hammer enough of them it could be a case of death by a thousand cuts. They may not be as well defended if they are some what isolated and maybe, just maybe, the Luftwaffe may stay on the ground and not bother to defend them.

On another subject, does the Luftwaffe player have the ability to Bodenplatte you? I keep having this vision of a taxiing B-17 BG getting turned in to landfill by some marauding Jabos. Or is the game strictly about the Allied player on offence and the Luftwaffe is defense?

It's attack versus defence only I'm afraid, no need to worry about marauding FW-190s attacking your airfields!

In my experience, the Luftwaffe will always respond to your raids no matter what they are targeted against. If you target enough of the right type, then hitting smaller targets will eventually have an effect.

Hey warshipbuilder ! <S> Sir.

Good questions both.

The luftwaffe player is limited to only engaging your AC and can not perform similar missions as you can. No Fighter Sweeps, Recon, etc... The Patrols they can set can not perform the same as those the Allied commander's forces can.

With respect to Industrial Capacity and your Target Selection that is a very good question. The most simplistic answer you have already put forth, Death from a Thousand Cuts is legitimate. Working on facilities with a higher Industrial output is IMHO the better strategy but can be problematic over time. Your presumption as to a ratio of AA to Capacity of a facility is sound. Especially if the AI is running the Axis. You will find a Human opponent much more challenging. The AI looks at the entire world where a Human is intelligent enough to realize that you have range limitations and will cannibalize AA from way out Far East and move to the west and south. A shrewd opponent will build Flak Traps that you must traverse and wear you down.

Here is a way in which you may think of the balance between engaging the higher capacity facilities as opposed to the less industrial dense facilities.

If you strike a facility with a capacity of 4 and do 50% damage you have effectively destroyed 2 facilities with a capacity of 1 on that one strike. It's all about the math with respect to victory calculations. The Axis has a summed total industrial output capacity. Your goal is to reduce that to below that which has been determined that the Axis has been effectively defeated.

The problematic part I spoke of is where they are and what is near them. Very early in your Allied campaign most targets in ETO where you can actually reach them will be 1 & 2 capacity with a significant proportion of the Transport targets in that region being 2 & 3. Not until you can reach targets in the Rhur effectively will you be engaging much more dense industrial targets. That is where you will encounter the "problematic" concept of my discussion here. [8D]

In the MTO you will have your first opportunities to engage targets with industrial densities of >5. They are a bit more dispersed than the ETO but this will be no cake walk.

Once you get into 44 you should have much greater range of operations but the Axis will have been producing AA all the while and adding to the defense of targets. You will find some quite formidably defended facilities starting in this period of your campaign. The AI will tend to disperse them but a Human will build the Flak Traps I spoke of here.

Use your Recon here or Bleed.[8D]

As for the Luftwaffe not coming up to engage you.... uhh... I wouldn't count on that strategy. [8D]

KayBay [8D]

Hey KayBay,

Thanks for the warning about flak traps, hadn't thought of that. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

Destroy the rail net.
- scores terror points
- scores industrial points directly
- scores industrial points indirectly

IIRC, the post war assessment found the bombing of factories did not significantly impact industrial production, but the destruction of the rail net meant idle factories (no raw supplies) and finished goods going no where.

YMMV
