The Dak's data plates, just behind the cockpit.

A few from earlier in my career, during the Operations over Libya. A Tornado sliding into position to refuel.

Whilst his wingman waits patiently on the other wing.

Another Tornado. There was plenty of time to take pictures on a flight down to the Med and back.

A Tornado receiving fuel, as viewed through the CCTV camera.

Yet another Tornado sitting just off the TriStar wingtip.

It wasn't just the RAF we fuelled either, we saw trade from the French as well.

@ Dixie - What do you think of the new A330/Voyager ? Could've sworn I saw a C5 Galaxy come over Swindon on its way in to Fairford at a guess this weekend too

This is a bridge. I don't know where it is, but as I'm not a navigator no-one was bothered [:D] But speaking of the navigator, it may be surprising to know that the nav was constantly giving instructions to the crew. At one point he was telling them that they were 16 seconds ahead of schedule.

Sure looks like an aqueduct. Did the Romans build those in Britain? Probably.

On second thought I think that's a RR trestle, but certainly not a highway bridge.

wdolson -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (6/27/2013 2:31:33 AM)

I would guess it's one of the canals built in the 1800s. Some sections of some of the canals looked like Roman aqueducts.

Bill

I've not seen a lot of the Voyager, certainly not close up. The first one had just arrived at Brize shortly before I left. From what I've heard they're a step up from the 60/70s era airliners we were using.

After a quick visit to Google, I believe that it may be Welland Viaduct, near Corby. The Romans did build aquaducts and we've also got plenty of canal bridges around the country.

I'll miss the VC-10's though. Grew up with them coming over here on the Lyneham circuit

I won't! Noisy, dirty, oily, leaky and difficult to work on at times. Not to mention that it used Skydrol as a hydraulic fluid [:@] I can understand why some people get all nostalgic for them, but not me. Perhaps my opinion is tainted having worked 12 hour shifts in the freezing cold or out in the desert?

Nice with a Paveway and a Brimstone pair or triple.
What designator pods they use? Litening?

I think so. I will qualify that by stating that weapons are not my area of expertise. In fact they are a bit too warry for my liking [:D] Having worked on AT/AAR fleets for most of career, the world of small, fast and pointy is a bit of a mystery to me in many areas not least of which is the stuff they hang from their 'planes.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/1/2013 6:04:49 PM)

I managed to get another trip on the Lancaster yesterday, after a few days of hard work with lots of aircraft flying and not many people to look after them. The main focus of the trip was a display at Old Warden.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/1/2013 6:07:25 PM)

And this time I got a room with a view! Plenty of space to stretch out in the bomb aimer's position and watch the world go by. It's very hot on the ground with the sun shining through the perspex, but once she gets some forward momentum there's a nice breeze through the front turret.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/1/2013 6:09:25 PM)

The front turret was operated by the bomb aimer, instead of lying prone in the nose he sttod up with his upper body in the turret. It's not comfortable when flying through turbulence, especially when you're trying to get into the turret without smashing into all the protrusions! [:D]

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/1/2013 6:10:57 PM)

This is a still from a video I took over Old Warden, as we came in for our first pass the previous display was just landing. It was a Spitfire and (the only flying) Sea Hurricane, which can be seen taxying in next to the crowd line.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:20:09 PM)

Another week gone and another summer weekend means more work for the BBMF. Yesterday was busy, busy, busy as plans changed and things went U/S so there are no pictures from the 6th. However it was much quieter today and I was offered the chance of another trip in the Lanc, my third in the last four weeks [8D]

I had to pay a price for this one though, I had to prime the Lancaster's L/H engines. To do that someone needs to climb up onto the wheel in order to reach the priming pump. Then when the engine is primed they need to stay up there in case an engine doesn't start. Once the engines are up and running and the chocks are out it's time to jump on board.

This is the view before engine start.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:22:14 PM)

With today's flypast being a full display at RAF Waddington Airshow we had some company. This was my first trip with the fighters in attendance as well. No matter how close they look from the ground they look a lot closer from the air!

This is MK356, the Flight's Mk.IX Spitfire shortly after she joined up with us.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:24:43 PM)

And my (current) second favourite of the BBMF fleet, PZ865 in her SEAC colours. If she had a Vokes filter then she's be a clear winner in the best fighter competition. So I need you chaps (or lasses) to hassle my bosses until they at least agree to fit a dummy filter! [:D]

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:26:03 PM)

In fact, she's so good here's a second picture of her. I find it strange seeing aeroplanes with their undercarriage retracted, a side effect of spending so much time around them on the ground I suppose.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:28:41 PM)

MK356 again, her silver paint looks fantastic in bright sunshine as she almost glows at times! This aeroplane flew 60 missions in 60 days over Normandy around the time of Overlord. In those 60 days she landed wheels up three times before her squadron went to France and left her behind in the UK after the third one.

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:31:01 PM)

PZ865 again, the last Hurricane built by Hawkers (or anyone). She was bought back by Hawkers before entering RAF service and they kept her for various purposes. Unlike the other Hurricane (LF363) she has 20mm cannon barrels fitted. Mostly this picture is here to kmake sure there are more Hurricane pics than Spitfire ones!

Dixie -> RE: OT: Planes, Planes and More Planes (7/7/2013 5:33:17 PM)

A Vulcan (and some other stuff in the background). Only ten years was between the Lancaster and Vulcan bombers, the chief designer for both was the same man. British manufacturing pretty much skipped the B-29 generation of advanced prop bombers and went straight into (for the time) advanced jets.

The fighters break away to do their own displays.
