Well, there's a certain logic to abandoning captured islands in the centpac. Either Damian reinforces them or he does not. If he does, you've lured more of his reserves (probably local) into strategically irrelevant locations. If he does not reinforce them, you create a little narrative that at least parts of the centpac offensive are a distraction, which makes him ponder whether or not that narrative is itself a distraction from what might end up being a critical thrust with the kurile foothold gone. Further, you can recapture abandoned islands with the thought on his part that it is more of the same. It creates doubt as to your objectives and priorities, as well as creating potential hesitation in response. That said, based on your description of his play, I would suspect that Damian has learned to focus on what he thinks is important more than whatever narrative you are feeding him (more so than most players, anyway), so in that case the value, as I see it, is "noise" in his intelligence that can get him to ignore signs at first glance, which buys you perhaps an day or two to get a foothold when you use some of the freed divisions for reinforcing a front line hold. That would be especially true if you use some minor xAK or xAP shipping during the abandonment phase which can make him numb to the presence of such shipping. For Burma, I'm guessing you are perhaps hoping that the common wisdom of the defense at Moulmein pre 44 squads and a relatively static OMG will lure an overcommitment at that line, allowing for a greater pocket with a deeper littoral invasion (how is Tavoy defended?). That said, you've said he's been ruthless in abandoning things that are lost, so perhaps it is more likely that he will thin the line to free some kind of reserve for response there, in which case I see another opportunity. If you deployed the OMG to the hex just below Moulmein, it would cut the rail and the road up from Tavoy, as well as an intersection of yellow trails from Bangkok. You've already indicated a willingness to use landings on non base hexes, and there's unlikely to be a massive supply pool at Moulmein at this point, in my guess. A simultaneous paradrop at Rahaeng, if it is takeable, or possibly the clear hex to the se (less ideal in terms of supply cutoff, but probably more takable) or Ayuthia (probably more risky due to 1 hex lrcap to slow/kill transports, though he'd have to shock attack anywhere but diverting some of the Bangkok garrison if you got the lodging). With one of those bases lost, Rahaeng especially, he'd have no active supply to the river defense hexes and he would almost certainly have to abandon his line and move toward Rahaeng due to hex control and the roads there. That would give you the inside track to reach Bangkok before his troops could (effectively interior lines due to road length/quality). My guess is that would pull the line all the way back into Indochina without having to fight anything substantial. Not deploying the OMG now lets you see where your littoral campaign would be most effective next while playing at luring more troops back towards those coastal bases in China, which could end up creating a Dunkirk style pocket for the Japanese if he leaves them until later.

Schlemiel gets the gold star for the local aspect of the CENPAC withdrawals - creating noise, confusion and luring him to garrison bases I've no intention of using. Additionally being slow draws IJN elements into action --- which weakens the IJN off Burma and in the DEI ( and in NORPAC ). E.g. I'm bombing Mili daily and Damian is using transports, FT TFs etc to move the 10th Garrison Unit into position in Mili. Since I'm bombing it but haven't actually even attempted to interdict these reinforcements ( I made a show of doing so with the CL TF raid but hit the convoy going elsewhere, not the one going to Mili ) perhaps I'm quite happy to let these reinforcements gather in an irrelevant place? As to Burma: Well I can't conduct a littoral campaign until I weaken his naval force in the region and, right now, his navy is much stronger than mine in the Burma region.... Some I'll sink, more I'll damage and even more I plan to lure away with unignorable distractions elsewhere. Everyone forgets about Darwin though and the 1500 AV of troops from there. How could any delays impact on the re-allocation of these troops? ---- specifically in terms of causing them to be re-allocated where I WANT them to go and where they'll do least good. Remember, EVERYTHING is always phased with respect to operations in other theatres. The nice thing about Damian is that he sees through a lot of this stuff and so I have to be really rather sneaky. Even then sometimes it doesn't work as he has learnt to correctly identify the critical centres of things and act appropriately irrespective of any obfuscatory narrative.

Troops take time to move from Darwin to Burma. If the position there were to collapse before they could arrive but long after they had been irretrievably committed you might have the best of both worlds with those reserves not being available to counter significant developments in the DEI and CENPAC. Over the last couple of days I've finally almost cleared the road net from Taung Gyi to Pegu, forcing an IJA Infantry Regiment and 3 Tank Regiments into the jungle near Chiang Mai, have begun moving out of Pegu with 3,200 AV of troops and tanks. They will have to shock attack across a river but are opposed by only 7 units. I'm going to blast them with bombers tomorrow as I cross the river. It'll be interesting to see how my forces do. I've been experimenting and now can reliably co-ordinate sweeps with escorts, LRCAP, level bombers and dive-bombers ( at different altitudes and from 2 to 3 different bases ) through the different air forces on the Allied side. So, I can pretty much handle the absolute worst case scenario imaginable. It really wasn't that difficult either. I'm a bit confused why others seem to find it so difficult. Line up the HQs, ranges etc and it works out just fine. The IJN looks like it is serious about intervening with 4 CVs and at least 4 BBs (+ escorts ) just 8 to 9 hexes from Rangoon and Pegu. If they hit me they'll win the battle but they'll take serious losses - an outcome I'm happy to accept. In Oz I'm in the process of taking the northern bases west of Darwin and gathering an armoured force for the invasion of Java... I've changed plans a little as I really am going to need shorter SLOCs between the US and British and I want the ports and repair shipyards. The British have very few repair yards. In CENPAC he has committed CVLs AND CVs ( At the very least Kaga and 1 other CV are present ) to commerce raiding in CENPAC. I have a couple of ambushes there and my own CVs will be in range in 4 days so if he chases the targets I've teased him with I might be able to sink some CVLs. Otherwise he'll run away before I can engage. He's flooding this region with more and more shipping and troops and reacting much more strongly than I would have expected. This is great news as every ship here is one fewer ship elsewhere. China: I've gotten intel that tank units are moving to the Shanghai/Changsha axis. I expect a major armoured thrust through this region. I think I'll just fall back before it and draw his forces into the Chinese hinterland... making a virtue of necessity. I'm also going to send some AT Regiments from Burma to China to prevent his armoured forces from running as riot as they have. It seems likely that he has matched his CVs/CVLs by speed, and that would mean a slower CV with Kaga, likely Hiyo or Junyo. Given their slower speed and smaller capacity, they should not be able to run away from your CVs. Fingers crossed - love to see CV battles - rare and unpredictable.[:)]

Actually I saw some planes from Junyo there also so that would make sense. I think he has 2 CVL and 2 to 3 CVs in the region. I won't be chasing them down though, as that evens the odds. No, I'll wait in ambush IF he pursues morsels I've displayed in front of him but I'm not interested, at all, in a fair fight. The USN only has 2 CVs left and if I lose them then I'm fairly stumped in the Pacific for the next 18 months.

So what is the secret to air mission co-ordination. Just having HQa's in range doesn't seem enough. Are you actually aligning the command structures of the units i.e air units subordinated to the actual HQ's in range? Regards Andrew

Guys, OPSEC has come up a lot recently in CRs AAR and there was an OPSEC breach of this game when someone mentioned my creation of an OMG in Burma in a general forum thread. It was unintentional but, still, it shouldn't have happened. If I was playing anyone but Damian and two others here I'd quit this AAR now due to the, frankly, nonsensically accepting attitudes to this OPSEC breach which has happened in CRs AAR. As it is I think I'm going to put it on hold until such time as an attitude whereby those who breach OPSEC are actually censured is brought into effect. It seems like the guy who broke OPSEC is going to get away Scott free, which is crazy since even if unintentional he can't breach OPSEC while acting as secret, self-appointed moral guardians I will say that I tested co-ordinating dive and level bombers and that works well also with a slight drop in coordination but still well over 80% co-ordination. I also got perfect coordination of sweeps and escorts so the sweeps went in at the same time as the bomber group and acted as free-ranging escort. Honestly I'm having difficulty NOT getting coordination unless I do things designed to break it. Also the OMG proved itself in the river crossing north of Moulmein, maintaining combat power and with minimal disruption vis a vis the accompanying infantry divisions. Anyways I'll talk with Damian about OPSEC and we'll see what he thinks.

I would be sad to see this AAR go into hibernation due to the carelessness of others. I am really enjoying it. I understand your feelings but its kind of like letting the terrorists win. I for one sincerely request you to reconsider and keep at it. Meantime how did you get such high levels of co-ordination? I haven't seen anything near that. I regularly fly multi unit B-24J missions all from the one base with an air HQ and they frequently break up into small sub units in the raid. I don't know what else I need to do to improve the situation. Cheers Andrew

And there's not much defense against a PM - and by that I mean that unless they put something in the subject line that might clue you in, you are not gunna know it's OPSEC until you read the PM. Also, if you think you might glean something from a post I or someone else makes in your AAR then it's your job to call me out. Do it nicely if you believe it was unintentional but do it openly as an educational/training opportunity for our community. Suggestion: You & Damian might both post regularly in your AARs a concern about OPSEC and request that anyone that feels a need to post a "concern" do so to a 3rd party "umpire" and let that person do an investigation. Using an umpire could take away that unintentional OPSEC violation by any of your concerned readers. Intentionally sending PMs or intentionally posting of OPSEC in an AAR is really an act of malice. I don't know how you can stop someone that intentionally is bent towards ruining games that post AARs. The only 100% effective way of combating that scenario is to cease your AAR. It looks like you and Damian both enjoy posting AARs. From the number of hits your AARs have it looks like a lot of people enjoy watching and learning from your AARs. It would be sad to see you both lose out on additional enjoyment from playing this game. Just my 2 cents.

I think a mea culpa is necessary before anyone should think about letting someone off the hook for even an unintentional opsec violation. If someone can't even admit "my bad" for playing ironic morality police, then they do not deserve white knighting by others. Obviously, such breaches can be unintentional. But if they are unintentional, the culprit should own up and learn from it. That said, I'm generally of the opinion that pms about a game to a player with an aar are generally bad taste anyway. If the player can benefit from the advice or discussion, their aar can generally benefit as well.

Well, I thought I should update.... Damian and I have gotten another week under our belt... with the interregnum being marked by lack of net access etc. After some thought - and rather a lot of amazement at 2 things: 1. The fact that the person who broke OPSEC once again doesn't even get a pat on the wrist about what they did and 2. Email from them to me in which they refute that their email to CR in any way broke OPSEC ( a rather delusional ( insofar as it has no connection to reality and shows a real lack of insight ) and minority viewpoint ) I've decided that the thing that matters is that I trust Damian 100%. If someone tries to ruin the game by emailing him I trust him to do what's right and together we will work through it. It does severely limit the number of people I'd be willing to play in future which is a pity but such is life. In terms of what has been happening. Well, subs have run rampant, major armies have clashed with thousands dead and injured on both sides near Moulmein, IJN raiders are raiding deep into my operational depth in Oz, the Pacific and Burma, Damian has gotten carriers into my convoy lanes again and dozens of fighters on both sides were downed as the IJNAF and IJAAF tested its ability to take control of the air over Burma back again. The Allies have embarked on a strategy which even I think is high risk in order to keep frontline formations in Burma etc in action and just yesterday we had yet another bout of surface action involving carriers. I think we are 1 to 2 days away from our first carrier battle also. I'll begin with the monthly update later today and then bring you through the last week sequentially. So, as of 21st November where are we in terms of score, troop losses etc? Score: In August the score was Japan: 30,651, Allies: 9,976. A ratio of 3.07 : 1 in favour of Japan. Auto-victory was a possibility. In November the score is Japan: 37,667, Allies: 16,715. In the past 3 months Japan has gained 7,016 points while the Allies have gained 6196 points, a ratio of 1.13:1 in Japan's favour. Auto-victory is now utterly unattainable for Japan and a roughly 1:1 exchange rate for these 3 months is an extremely good result for the Allies. Aerial Losses: In August Japan had lost 3,064 planes to 3,500 Allied planes lost. Japan lost 0.88 planes for every Allied plane lost. In November Japan had lost 5071 planes to 5297 Allied planes. In the 3 months from August to November Japan lost 2007 planes to 1797 Allied planes. Japan therefore lost 1.12 planes for every Allied plane lost. This is, again, an extremely favourable turn-around for the Allies and has been achieved while withdrawing many of my squadrons to training in order to create a pilot training programme. The first fully trained graduates of this programme ( 70 Skill in their primary skill ) should graduate at the end of November. Japanese losses and the impact of Allied airpower should increase significantly as I bring the full Allied airforce into play from January 1943. Army Losses: In August Japan had lost 805 points of ground forces while the Allies had lost 10,990. This was a ratio of 13.65 Allied losses per Japanese ground force point lost. By November Japan had lost 1451 points of ground forces while the Allies had lost 13,700. So in the three months from August Japan had lost 646 points of ground forces to 2710 points of ground forces. This is a ratio of 4.2:1. While this ratio isn't 1:1 or better it is still over 3 times better than the ratio which was being achieved prior to mid-August and this ratio has been achieved whilst transitioning over to several major strategic offensives which have achieved almost all their objectives. Most of the losses I have suffered have come to tank attack in China. I am responding by sending several AT Regts from Burma to China to help bolster the Chinese infantry vs tanks. Naval losses: In August the IJN had suffered the loss of 64 vessels worth 434 points while the Allied fleet had lost 532 vessels worth 7,551 points. The Japanese were achieving a 17.4 : 1 ratio in naval losses. By November the IJN had lost 132 vessels worth 1260 points while the Allied fleet had lost 834 vessels worth 10,348 points. Over the past three months the IJN had lost 826 naval points to 2797 Allied naval points. This represents a 3.4 : 1 kill ratio. Of course this could be better but: a) It is already a fivefold improvement on the loss ratio before August and b) It was achieved by only the damaged, unupgraded, scattered remnants of forces I had to throw together in emergency TFs with insufficient support. When I can begin meeting the IJN with repaired, upgraded TFs organised as I'd wish with appropriate logistical and aerial support this 3.4 : 1 ratio will improve even more significantly. So, bottom line, Japanese losses have rocketed upwards with 40% of their aerial losses, 43% of their ground losses and 2/3rds of their naval losses occuring in the past 3 months ( versus the previous 9 months ). The RATE of loss has increased even more massively with the monthly loss RATE increasing as follows: air - more than tripled, ground - almost tripled, naval - more than sextupled. Attacking the Japanese critical weakness: The key to breaking Japan is to draw in and pin their army strategic reserves and increase the RATE of their aerial and ground losses to an unsustainable rate such that they cannot rebuild their strategic reserves. I believe that that is currently being achieved. Over the next 3 months I'll open a new front in the DEI and seek additional significant attrition of the IJA in that region as I seek to increase IJA loss rates and ratios even further. So, so far everything's going according to plan. My losses are being kept at a level which allows me to speedily rebuild my air force and navy. I have taken steps to ensure the British and Indians have the ability to sustain prolonged attritional combat and as Japan's loss rate increases and its forces shrink mine will only continue to grow stronger. So, the strategic plan's working nicely.

Hummmmm, was the identification of the dastardly perp ever revealed? I'd like to scratch that person from my "to play" list. I don't know about punishing persons that unintentionally breach opsec, but the Forum should develop and publish a policy on what will happen to persons deemed culpable of both intentional and unintentional breaches. So much time and energy is invested in a game and AAR that there should be more than a verbal slap-about for messing with players. Why does this kind of stuff happen to you so much? Perhaps it would help to write in a "delayed-reporting" fashion such as some AAR writers do. By playing a couple of game weeks ahead of the AAR, opsec breaches would have a diminished effect. Of course, writers such as you that like to discuss strategic decision-making in real time will still be vulnerable. Maybe you should consider discussing strategy after the fact rather than going into it in detail before carrying it out. I'm much too paranoid to write an AAR, but if I did, it would be done in the "delayed reporting" style.

princep01, Well the person who talked about OMGs in the main forum was, I believe, just being over-enthusiastic. As to the person who broke OPSEC in J3 vs Canoerebel. Yeah, if you want to know who that is PM me and I'll let you know so you can scratch them off your to play list. As to why it happens to me so much. Well the majority of the time it has happened it has been due to a single person deciding to wreck the game ( FatR to be precise ). Pretty much all of the other OPSEC breaches have been unintentional but FatRs have been intentional and he has said he'll happily do it again. One reason I'd never play John III ever again is that he defended FatR at the time --- and also Symon ( aka JWE aka Osterhaut ) when he was using his Osterhaut alter ego to post racist and bigoted comments about Europeans etc. Overall I had a think about it and just realised that so long as I didn't play people in that orbit ( FatR/JIII etc ) then I could trust them and it didn't matter what intentional breaches occured since I could rely on the person I was playing to be honourable about it. Like I said, I trust Damian 100%. And now onto the game... Things have really gotten more interesting over the past week. But before I outline what has happened I'll answer the question i posed earlier about what the strategic reason to delay moving on Moulmein might be. Basically by delaying moving on Moulmein I'm ensuring that: 1. The IJA forces from Darwin are largely redeployed to Moulmein as "just in time" reinforcements. The stress of getting stuff there "just in time" would, IMO, encourage over-commitment of forces to this blocking action. 2. My plan always was to defeat his forces piecemeal. 2a The first phase was to lure him forward into the area north of Moulmein, south of Pegu in the belief that using a second river crossing to damage my troops would be advantageous. Of course the problem with that is that they'd also not have the benefit of the forts in Moulmein. Once I saw he had 5 units committed forward I ordered my forces across the river from Pegu. Once across their job is to attrit whatever forces he has here such that they won't be able to materially add to the defence of Moulmein. 2b. Moulmein itself. BY hitting Moulmein slowly I'm hoping to lure the garrison forward ( see above ) BUT still hit it quickly enough that I begin writing down the forces there before his reserve from Darwin can enter the fray. My plan is simply to render his forces at Moulmein combat ineffective but allow them to be saved by his forces moving up from Darwin. If his forces in Moulmein are very weak then I am reserving the option of capturing it and carrying out the next phase further inland. 2c. As his Moulmein defenders are whittled down they will be reinforced by the reserve he has formed from the forces at Darwin. This reserve will then be sucked into the fighting at Moulmein or slightly inland from Moulmein. This then pretty much removes the IJA forces he has freed up from Darwin. 3. So, over time, but a little slowly I intend to continue the CENPAC airborne thrust, taking islands and pushing up into the Saipan, Truk region. This will require the garrisoning of all of those islands as well as the use of sacrificial garrisons in the region I'm currently working through. 4. Pressure will be kept in the Aleutians with scouting missions and minor raids. This should encourage garrisoning of this region. 5. In the meantime I'm buying out US Army tank units and Australian tank and infantry units as rapidly as possible and prepping for some significant invasions in the DEI. The force he could use to stop me cold there is the force which is going to be rushed to Moulmein, sucked in and held close in attritional battle there. So, the reason for moving slowly on Moulmein was to allow reserves to be sucked into a just in time rescue - making them unavailable in other regions as those escalated. Interesting discussion on pulling his reserves into Moulmein, I remember you saying you were allowing him to withdraw his forces from Darwin several weeks back, but didn't connect the dots to this fight.

You were able to overcome low prep levels at Mili due to his troops probably having very high disruption (80 or higher) and in all likelihood little to no supply. The newer Beta patches have units with over 50 experience levels and already at 100 prep for a base switch over to a new enemy objective at either 25 or 33 which helps. Good job overall here. [:)]

What does even mean? It means that I'll lose less than 3 times what he loses. Ideally I'd like to lose only double what Damian loses but that'll be very difficult to pull off. So long as I keep my losses below triple his I'll be doing fine though. This is based on the loss ratio I've been inflicting since taking over. The most important thing isn't sinking his CVs actually but just sending them back to the repair yards for a month so I can get enough supplies and xAPs into the Tabiteau/Tarawa area that I can push an amphibious landing through vs Maloelap ( or a surrounding base ). Once I have that then all of his holdings in the area except Eniwetok will be in range of dive-bombers and Avengers operating from dirt fields and it'll be over for him in that region.... I'll then shift the USN past Guadalcanal etc into Northern Oz and push north into the DEI in January 1943 with a view to taking Soerabaja and getting the fuel etc I need to power Oz without endless wasteful supply convoys.
