Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> What do you look for in a forum? (1/3/2003 10:26:57 PM)

Ok I am DEFINITELY likely asking for it here.

I will freely admit I asked for it at this point in time if it goes out into wacky land.

Just wondering though (yeah I wonder about the darndest things I suppose).

When you go to a forum, what is it you are actually looking for?

1. something to do, nothing more.
2. serious wargame debates
3. mud slinging wrastling grade action
4. technical input
5. game info
6, silly topic discussions
7.
8.
9.
10

Ran out of ideas, someone help me fill out the list up there.

I have found myself, politics often gets to nasty. So I don't tend to pursue them with any interest. One side is always willing to say things that get the thread turfed.
Religion ...see politics.

But I do like the amusement out of RTS vs Turn debates I guess. The debaters are usually equally matched, so it is often a good scrap.

I also like I suppose game design opinion based debates as well. They usually end up sufficiently informative, and are often more effective than dry game reviewers comments.

All of the links to obscure WW2 sites that people are forever posting.

:D

I like the exposure to other games or mods that I wouldn't otherwise know about, much less purchase.

I find the discussion of game design here, in particular, to be very interesting. The exposure to the additional sites etc that we all find is cool too. No way could I find them all myself, even if I tried.

On the other hand, I tend to avoid forums that are 'overmoderated' i.e. dissenting views are suppressed, threads are locked too quickly etc.

I also tend to drag down forums where the maturity level is higher by participating, heheh, seriously, it doesn't take too many readings of n00b or somesuch slang or juvenile posturing to turn me off.

Noodleboy -> i look for (1/4/2003 1:06:34 AM)

Chicks.
Why? 'cos i don't have one.
Why don't i have one?
'Cos i spend too much time on fora like these that have no chicks on -****!!!

Maliki -> (1/4/2003 3:12:41 AM)

Active discussions.
Friendly to moderately heated debate.
Info on new or old games i may be interested in.
Interesting topics.

Thats why i think i finally joined the forums here,i lurked for a long time,it has all of those things mentioned above.At first i wasn't sure about it after seeing some threads where the name calling and such got pretty nasty,but all in all its a nice place here.

Information about everything. :)

Fun.

Get some insight about some interesting ways of seeing things that may not always have been my cultural way of looking at it.

I think we miss, for exampe, asiatics and russians.

Trying to let you understand what is THE way of seeing things : mine.:D :D

Brigz -> (1/4/2003 7:37:32 AM)

Pretty much like what goes on here at the Matrix. If I want to discuss games and game related subjects, I can go to the General Discussion forum. If I want something a little more spicy and combative, I can go to the Art of Wargaming forum. A nice balance. A very good bunch of participants.

hear hear!!!! I agree. or to use the vernacular, beer.

or is that saying something twice / repetetive?

stevemk1a -> (1/4/2003 3:13:58 PM)

I was first drawn to the Matrix forum because of Spwaw. I've discovered more here, though. It's always interesting to browse these threads... Good reading and lots of information from people interested in wargaming and military history (like me). Also some great entertainment in Art of Wargaming! :D

Opinions, discussions and the free exchange of information. A forum, to me, is like a window into somewhere else. A chance to find out how the rest of the world looks at things.

I also appreciate game tips and discussion, and the links that many furnish.
