How does "react to enemy" work for surface combat TFs? How far away do you usually place surface TFs when defending a base?

React to Defend Friendly Base (page 27 of the manual)

As far as possible out, yet not so far that they will "react" themselves into enemy land based air strike range. :)

Seriously, that is about how I do it.

I am sure others are more skilled than I but making sure your big fat CAs don't get themselves nailed by the enemy land based air the next day because they are chasing a retreating enemy supply run should be a prime consideration on where you send them IMHO. :p

Here are a couple of things that I found to be helpful in using surface TFs to successfully react.

1. Adequate naval search. Surface TFs do not seem to react if a TF pops up out of nowhere.

2. Aggressive TF Commander. More aggressive TF commander is much more likely to move to combat.

3. Retirement Allowed on. TF will react, fight, then return to base. Sometime not possible, but good if you can.

4. Distance 4-6 hexes away. TFs can react even farther away, as I have had a TF react from as far as 8 hexes.

5. Fuel and operation points. Adequate fuel on operational points limit the react distance. If the TF cannot move far, it won't react far either.

Of course, I have had a ASW group of DDs react 8 hexes away to meet enemy BBs. Not pretty.
