It looks like a "D" model, is that right?

looks like a G with the nose turret....not sure though

Pretty sure thats a G. D model didn't have a top turret.

And had a tail that looked like it would fall off!

I remember crawling through a B-17 and was shocked by just how small it was having been around modern Fighters and bombers. I seem to recall the bomb bay being something akin to a kitchen table in size. The idea of being in something so small while being shot at was unreal. It's scary to think just how new aircraft are. I grew up with people who were alive before there were airplanes. The first plane my dad saw was during WW2.

Imagine... 110 years or so of flight, and imagine if the Wright Flyer was in that picture. Think of that comparison, and imagine what the next 100 years might produce.

I worked around F-14's while in the Navy and remember my first visit to the Memphis Belle. I was shocked to read that the wingspan of the B-17 was actually less than that of a modern (granted, larger than most) fighter. [X(]

Crawling around a B-17 really was a surprise for me. At five foot eight I'm not huge but I felt claustrophobic in that plane.
