What's your favorite aphorism in The Art of War?

Mine is, "Rush down like a mountain stream; fill every crevice."

RevRick -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 5:53:49 PM)

quote:

Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death. - Sun Tzu

Don Bowen -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 6:11:26 PM)

There is an approximate quote that I heard long ago. It was loosely attributed to a Chinese general, but that may or may not be true. Anyway, it goes:

A poor decision, quickly made and instantly acted upon, fathers a greater chance of success than the perfect plan too long pondered.

Chickenboy -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 6:44:59 PM)

Strive to strike emptiness with fullness.

HexHead -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 6:47:48 PM)

"Hit 'em where they ain't."

Wait, that's Wee Willie Keeler, late of the Baltimore Orioles. Still, good idea.

I think the purple cinch is just simply adorable. Can't wait to see the spring collection.

I don't recall that being one of Sun Tzu's aphorism's.......

HexHead -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 10:29:01 PM)

Sun Tzu spent a lot of time at courts and palaces - he knew the importance of the right fashion statement.

"Always get extra pancakes with the plum sauce."

HexHead -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/7/2013 10:57:16 PM)

Not extra sauce with the pancakes?

I always run out of the pancakes. Go figure. [:)]

(I'm a plum rationer apparently)

Well, the pancakes are obviously not going into your lithe figure, they must be accreting into your antlers. Although, you've got one heck of an overhang, have you seen an orthodontist about that?

Nah. The campers I run down and trample to death don't seem to mind the teeth.

Justus2 -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/8/2013 3:59:33 AM)

My favorite is:

"It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle."

When I finished serving as our battalion S2 (Intel officer), my commander gave me a copy of Sun Tzu's book as a parting gift, I still have it.

Canoerebel -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/8/2013 4:49:14 AM)

I don't have any favorite Sun Tzu sayings. As far as I know, I don't know any Sun Tzu sayings. Other than what I can glean from the title of this thread, I don't know who Sun Tzu is or was.

Down here in the South, there is pretty much just one favorite military saying, "Git thar the firstest with the mostest." (I'm not sure Nathan Forrest actually said this - or said it quite like this - but it's universally famous nonetheless.)

HexHead -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/8/2013 4:58:03 AM)

Alas, it was the lack of a carrier fleet that doomed the South.

True, but I'd be surprised if he said it - after all, Purple was just so yesterday dahrling!

I prefer "Keep up the Skeer."

And this under-reported gem from NBF: "The what Proclamation?"

I'd heard something like it atributed to GS Patton.

"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week." - George S. Patton

Canoerebel -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/8/2013 5:10:22 PM)

You think George McClellan had a fundamental inability to apply that saying?

Admiral Sergi Goshkof used to keep a sign on his desk, "perfection is the enemy of good enough". I'm sure that "Little Mac" would have had a inability to subcribe to that truism as well. [:D]

I think it's related to a Shih Tzu.

catwhoorg -> RE: Favorite Sun Tzu sayings (5/8/2013 6:56:16 PM)

Don't get involved in a land war in Asia.

and the aligned,

Never fight at sea in the Pacific.

Guess we are all taking those to heart right ?

I'm pretty sure the exact quote is "Get there first with the most" without the "est"s. But this quote coming from someone who usually did neither, and kicked butt anyway.
