I do so dislike real time games....... most are no more than an exersize in who can click the fastest. The new line of turn based strategy turn with real time combat is a step up, allowing some use of strategy, but I do wish someone would make something like the old turn based stuff. To bad we cant use the term strategy to really find a strategy game, seems everyone loves to tack that name on every game remotely associated with a war game. Maybe some one should educate the people making games. Sorry, my little complaint.

I suppose that's why there is something for everyone. I have been playing Sudden Strike II recently, and it's quite good - it's RTS. The trick seems to be how you play it. I have the same complaint that you do against FPS games.

I play and very much enjoy Close Combat and its a RTS game. When I first started playing it I had the speed control set on 'Slow' and thought that was too fast. Now I have it set on 'Fast' and think its too slow. Every since I started playing Squad Leader I wanted a game in which my opponent moved and shot at the same time I did (just like real life), now I have that game. :) But I still enjoy TBS games too, occasionally.

Try "SHOGUN, TOTAL WAR". The AI is very strong. Great game. Considered graphically dated, but with excellent historical research and very good AI, try Sid Meir's Civil War Series. I got all three games: Gettysburg, Anteitem, and White Mountain Senarios on CD for only $10.00! Let me know what you think! :)

Try Medieval Total War. Even better than Shogun, but its alot more complex. and in defense of Halflife, the only fps I play. Halflife has a great plot and the game isnt just running and gunning.

I have since learned that RTS and RTT and Continuos are all terms that might have merit. Bottom line for me though, is a turn based game is what I want. RTT and Continuous are likely a step in the right direction to toning down click fests. Making games about playing a battle (like Sudden Strike II which I have), and not just about producing units to mindlessly storm out faster than the opponent though (like the Command and Conquer style) has zero appeal to me. The thinking involved in those games has nothing in common with the thinking I wish to indulge. I have heard persons display such passion about how great those games are. Might as well try selling eskimos freezers.

sid meirs gettysburgh was a watershed design with some glaring flaws but still it showed that this genre can produce some of the most interesting...."real life" game concepts that I have yet seen the baby is still in the crib ...don't strngle it;)

Oh crap I forgot to mention battelfronts airborne assault red devils over arnhem... a defintive realtime simulation http://battlefront.com/index.htm seriously it is absolutly the best game on the topic and trust me I have played ALL the turn based games on the subject it really is that good and multiplayer to boot!....worth every dime!:D

I just hate the kind of seemingly very popular games like Starcraft/Warcraft or Age of Empires/Kings/Conquerors where it's just "everybody runs to the center of the screen and whacks at each other". But even in the games Stef mentioned a good mouse and a quick hand are still at great price. Really, when can you [B]think[/B] in such games?:rolleyes:

Game engine was new and exciting 2. I liked the time period I bought medievel because 1. I love the medievil subject matter 2. I stll liked the game engine Unfortuanatly I wont be buying the one about rome... I dont like the subject matter and the game engine is becoming dated. I was hoping they would use the engine and do a ACW game.

You can always halt the action and do your orders in the meantime, if you like to. (That might be unrealistic, but at least there's no need for a click-fest.) At least I personally use to [B]think[/B] and [B]rethink[/B] my battle tactics pretty frequently. (Guess what, sometimes it really helped...) :cool:

It's like learning by heart a couple of cookie recipes and then baking them as the guests bang on your door :p

You're right about that. I only thought of single player mode. Not because it's the [I]best[/I] way of playing (that game), but because I cannot yet manage to play at the same time with others, unfortunately. Mostly I have time when my buddies don't have time (or the reverse). So there's just PBEM. I don't like that situation. But where's the perfect solution?

halflife is great, the only game that lasted 2years on my HD[ with a little help of some mods and opposing force of course]. i love the toltal war series, ive got both of em but in shogun after finishing it a couple of times i started to play gunpowder ONLY battles so i hope part 3 will be napoleontic. Close Combat 2 is in my opinion the best in a great series [ 3 was boring, playing 6battles in a row on the same map just outside moskow then lozing because you lose your 1 KV2.] Jagged Alliance games are great too, im totally into Jagged Alliance 2 again. lastly i bought sid meiers gettysburg a week ago, 5euro's nice game

And there's exactly what you seriously can call "real"-time. To fight a complete war in a few hours is ridiculous, from a simulating point of view, but fighting a medieval battle in max. a few hours (without time limit), that seems fair to me. I think it's just realism to have to decide as quickly as a real commander had to do.

Yes, I have Medieval: Total War, although it isnt working right now. The strategic part is turned based, so you dont have to worry about real time crap while planning your builds and strategic moves. The battles are real time, but they are with what you brought so no worry about building or anything, just fight the battle. This design doesnt bother me nearly as much as a full real time game, were you have zero chance to plan produce AND move your forces. Most of them become a matter of learning what units produce the fastest so you can swarm kill your opponent before he can do the same to you. I will be buying Master of Orion 3 also, as I understand it, the battles are real time there too, but again at a slower pace with strategic turns turn based.
