LyleGorch -> Clueless in N. Africa (1/5/2003 6:43:33 AM)

Hello all,

I just finished a U.S. v. Vichy French scenario -- amphib. assault -- as the first battle in a WWII campaign. I wiped the floor with the French, took their obj. hexes and destroyed the HQ in short order. The enemy knocked out two of my tanks, a halftrack, and maybe three squad's worth of GI's. When the result screen came up, however, I was given a draw and showed a loss of 276 men!:mad:

Questions:

1. Are soldiers left behind when squads are loaded on tanks counted as casualties? (I picture the poor guys getting mowed down as the Shermans pull away.)

2. Is there a penalty for keeping landing craft around after they have debarked their troops/vehicles?

3. Do I need to leave the enemy in possession of a few obj. hexes until the last turn, in order to gain points for myself?

I am on old SP'er, but new to WAW. I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Thanks!

1.) Yes, troops left behind are casualties.

2.) No penalties for keeping a L/C around.

3.) Unless the objectives are Points/turn hexes, and you control most of them, then it doesn't matter - get it over with as quick as possible.

Remember, each of your vehicles kill will have men in it, which adds to the totals. Troops bought with support points count for enemy kills, so if you lost alot of engineers that you bought with support points, that will account for some of your losses. If you call for reinforcements, the enemy gets points equal to 25% of their value, as if he had killed them, then gets the points again if he does kill them. My guess is that in the heat of battle, you just were not noticing the casualties pile up, especially if you were winning.

Welcome aboard!

LyleGorch -> Much appreciated (1/5/2003 8:02:26 AM)

Thanks, Goblin -- that's good to know. I did lose several engineers in the landing, and some more casualties may have occured in barrages. I forgot how quickly they add up. In addition, I recall having loaded some engineers on halftrack TD's (duh), thus losing at least 2/3 of the squad in each case. I am used to playing SPWW2, so this is all new to me. (From Col. to 2nd Looie in one battle!)

What's the rationale in counting the surplus (not-loaded) GI's as casualties? Given the scale of the battles, I would suppose that all of them would simply make their way to their units in a fairly short time -- the rule seems to discourage tank riders. So much to learn....

All in all, I am thoroughly hooked on WAW, and your good advice will serve me well.

Thanks

Shhhhh! Don't say the word advice ! You will likely get far more than you bargained for! I dunno the rationality behind the extra soldiers being counted as casualties. Got me. It would be cool if they just became a recon team or something.

Anyways, you are quite welcome. Like I said, you will often get too much info at once, lol.

Belisarius -> Kills... (1/5/2003 5:20:28 PM)

Just an observation I've made; I don't really trust the game's headcount after battles - it always seem a bit high.

Made this test once, where I lined up 20 Tigers vs. 35 T-34s and let them duke it out. :cool: Tigers beat T-34s everytime (ofcourse!) and I made a point of mowing down the crews as much as possible. (the reason for this test was my frustration with the T's ability to not die during a previous battle, so I thought I'd check)

However, after the "battle", the SO losses were FAR above the total number of crew members ever present on the field. :confused: This happened every time.

Maybe gmenfan or Mark has some info to clear my confusion?

More a matter of good sportmanship, green one! (I'm sure you never heard of this before, go look it up in a dictionary :D )

I only want the credit I'm entitled to, not more. I don't like ballooning figures just to look good. :cool:

Bel - drinking double-strength espresso. Coffee are for sissies. :p
