Arcatus -> DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 1:19:08 PM)

It's getting close folks,

For reference, here is the new features:

  • +++++++++++++|Pre-hyperspace techs
  • ++++|Play as a pirate
  • ++++|New Ground combat mechanics
  • +++++|Ship/base capture
  • +++|Various minor feature changes (area weapons, facilities, etc)
  • +|New difficulty settings
  • +++++++|GUI and graphics engine improvements
  • A feature I forgot to mention

So, just for fun and in anticipation, pick two of the above that you are the most looking forward to.

For me it has to be
  • New Ground combat mechanics
  • GUI and graphics engine improvements

  • Osito -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 1:23:37 PM)

I would buy it just for the pre-hyperspace game. I love to start games like these at the single solar system level.

After that, the GUI changes will be welcome, as I find the font hard to read on my monitor.

    Everything else is icing.

    Osito

Antiscamp -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 1:25:52 PM)

Same here about the new pre-warp era start. I am really looking forward to that.

joeyeti -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 1:28:16 PM)

Apart from any new mod features that might be included, I'm looking forward to -

    Pre-Hyperspace techs
    New ground combat mechanics

TanC -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 2:15:03 PM)

Mansen -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 7:07:39 PM)

Looking forward to getting my hands on the game - Only got a short taste of it a while back and I've been waiting for the release sale. [:D]

Rising-Sun -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 7:59:24 PM)

I was wondering if they redid the ship hull classes. For example, a frigate would have hull space of XX and a destroyer alittle more, so on. Like MoO2 to research much larger hulls.

I couldnt figure out why to pack everything on a frigate of size 230, it get more space and still remain as a frigate. For instance, if you put 4-5 inches guns on a ship it would be a destroyer and 6 incher would be light cruiser and on. But that is what the navy is like in WWII.

Also noticed that when the game start from the beginning, you are not suppose to build resupply ship. There were a yellow warning that it cannot be build, but you can anyway. So i dont know if that is a glitch or what.

Erik Rutins -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 8:01:38 PM)

We didn't redo the classes, but automated design is much, much improved both in terms of the starting templates and the way the AI optimizes for size (thanks also to Haree for his yeoman work updating the design templates during the beta process).

    Regards,

    - Erik

Resupply ships and Carriers are hull types that you have to research for a normal start. Check the Starfighters tech tree and the construction tech tree for these.

JiminyJickers -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 8:38:22 PM)

Pre-hyperspace and the Engine updates is what I'm most looking forward to.

Can't wait for it to release.

CyclopsSlayer -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/16/2013 9:19:51 PM)

Umm, pretty much all of it, new techs, pirate starts, GUI, ground combat...

Pretty much spoiled for riches. :)

Plant -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 12:39:16 AM)

    GUI and graphics engine improvements.

The again, I wouldn't even consider the expansion, if it wasn't for the additional features.

Kayoz -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 12:56:31 AM)

Of the most interest to me:
    • Ship capture.
    • Pre-hyperspace start.
    • Pirate gameplay.

Kobracan -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 3:02:01 AM)

    I am looking forward to:

    1) New Ground combat mechanics
    2) Pre-hyperspace play

Pirate play looks very nice and well thought out and I will definitely try it but ultimately improvements on existing classic empire play interest me more.

Pipewrench -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 5:16:14 AM)

    +1 Kayoz

Constantine XI -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 2:16:45 PM)

    Pre-Hyperspace, for me.

I always have a hard time getting into DW because you start, even with the minimal start, with a semi-developed little empire. I much prefer starting fresh and getting to experience those first few steps.

I'm also really looking forward to using Shadows as my 'jumping in' point to get back in the game. I haven't played much since before the expansions. Really hope I can get into it this time.

Webbco -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/17/2013 6:55:16 PM)

Kayoz highlighted my top 3 things too...I'm already trying to think of a good Pirate empire name to call myself!!

jpwrunyan -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/18/2013 12:52:29 AM)

    o Base/Mine retrofitting
    o Troop panel multi-select
    o non-sucky victory screen--still no history chart tho, :-(
    o pre-warp game
    o meaningful economic challenges

feelotraveller -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/18/2013 2:51:35 AM)

    pre-hyperspace play

tied for second pick are- ship/base capture, difficulty settings

quite interested also in pirates and new combat mechanics

doozie -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/18/2013 3:27:08 AM)

Very excited to start off as a small pirate faction in the pre-hyperspace era, sounds very entertaining to me!

No specific space limit to specific class! Give us the liberty to express our strategy.

Plant -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/18/2013 3:40:51 PM)

    I second that!

WW1/WW2 roles aren't the same as a made up space game role.
There are no reason to try to enforce your specific roleplaying onto others roleplaying playstyle.

Anyhow, in real life, as large as feasibly possible, within limits of maneuverability was the optimum design for most ship types, to the extent that the ships designed with the original harrassing roles of cruisers ended up being as large as battlecruiser, trading armour for speed.

You already have the freedom to make your ships to fixed sizes, like the AI.
If there were limits to ship sizes for a role in distant worlds, then that role wouldn't be built at all, it'll just be irritating.

Anyhow, I read somewhere that the starting factions will start off evenly distributed, which makes a nice change!

Buio -> RE: DW:S is near - what are you looking forward to? (5/19/2013 9:11:40 AM)

    I have to say everything.

    quote:

    Features
  • Play as an Empire or a Pirate in the Age of Shadows
  • Start as a pre-Hyperspace Empire
  • Start as a Raider, Pirate, Mercenary or Smuggler and play with an entirely space-based faction that can if successful become a planetary empire as well
  • New Pirate Leader and Pirate Captain characters
  • Assault pods and ship to ship or base boarding actions, including ship and base capture
  • Gravitic Weapons and Tractor Beams
  • New expanded Ground Combat with new troop types and an animated ground battle resolution screen
  • Infantry, Armor/Mech, Special Forces, Planetary Defense Units
  • Resolution of the multiple stages of a planetary assault
  • New Ground Combat technology tree
  • Expanded and improved Area Weapons
  • New planetary facilities
  • Improved AI and new comprehensive difficulty settings
  • New and Improved higher performance Graphics Engine

  • If I have to pick a single feature, it's the increased performance. It's a technical feature, but my late games are really struggling in performance despite having a fairly fast computer. To be honest, I hope it's backported to previous versions as you shouldn't have to buy a third expansion to get that feature.

I've not experienced many crashes at all with Legends. I only get severe problems like that when running windowed. I'm now wondering if Windowed mode will work better with Shadows...?

That would be a welcome change. Far too often I've found that my starting system is right next to another race.
