Fredde -> Aunus front in 1944 - Suurimaki (2/14/2001 3:18:00 PM)

For those interested in the Finnish army, there is a new scenario coming up soon (my first! ). I'd be very glad if someone could test it for me. Write me an e-mail at f.ohman@telia.com and I will send it to you, in exchange for a report on how the scenario played. It is an infantry fight, and 25 turns long.. a little introduction follows.. In June 28, 1944, the Finnish battalion ErP 18 arrived to the village of Suurimaki in eastern Karelia. Major Borje Backstrom, commanding the unit, received orders to deploy in defensive positions on the heights surrounding the village. At 20.00 the units were deployed and ready, reinforced with an AA detachment (35.Kv ItPtri) with two 40 mm Bofors guns and two 20 mm AA guns. One platoon, commanded by Lt. Segerstrale was moved to the eastern outpost of Rautamaki despite Backstroms commander-in-chief, Lieutenant Colonel Lilius, assurance that no Russians would manage a march from Kuksmaki through the forest in that direction. The night passed silently. A bright summer morning came, with clear and sunny weather. The night mist remained yet another moment over Vitelenjoki and lake Nousemajarvi. Major Backlund looked out over the beautiful surroundings, rye fields and forests. Suddenly the silence was shattered by heavy rifle and machinegun fire from Rautamaki. Lt. Vasama from the AA-battery reported numerous Russians among the houses of Rautamaki. After a while, corpral Harry Engberg from Segerstrales platoon came running, with an estimate of the enemies strength to at least one battalion. The Russians had done the unexpected and marched through the forests! If Suurimaki is lost, JR (infantry regiment) 44 and artillery group Vahatupa can not escape. Can Major Backlund and his brave men prevent them? [This message has been edited by Fredde (edited February 14, 2001).] [This message has been edited by Fredde (edited February 14, 2001).]

Hi Fredde : ) I am testing this battle right now. It is done to a great map and everything works nice. If you are playing russian..... I'm playing Finns and at turn three lost first platoon and the hill. Platoon at the other hill have received fire and I'll suppose I'll have to get them out of there. Reinforcements are on their way to these positions, but I believe I'll have to pay full price when launching counterattack at next few turns. This is perkeleen good battle. I am not giving ground to SO without making they pay hard for it This is how Infantry battles should be done. I like this alot... mosh

Thanks Mosh! I'm glad you like it this far. Eventually, my aim is to make a campaign following ErP 18 from the start of the Soviet offensive until the end of the war. Of course their historical battles, but also one or two hypotheticals.. attacking the bridgehead at Tuulos for example. Would be glad to pass it around to another couple of testers in exchange for an AAR

Hi, Mosh. I lost my platoon also.... I won't say more except this was a fine, fine battle! Takes a while to play but it is worth every minute.

Fredde: I've just read a good book about volunteers from Estonia. There is also discribed some details of Erp18 while they were positioned close Viipuri and surroundings. Battle of Suurimäki gets some note too. Mail me if you are interested. ...hard fighting going on. I have moved AA:s to positions that they are shooting directfire and try to cut offensive to two different groups, that could be easier to finish with Suomimg. Hard times, but still alive mosh

Great battle so far. Have played about 10 turns as the Finns and am in a delaying action in order to set up a vicious defense of the river. I have been able to delay the Russkies but they have overrun the town in the middle. I have learned that defending the river is the best bet, don't try and hold the original victory hexes in the East, you will be overrun. A good infantry battle. I love fighting a pitched battle with reinforcements on the way, will they make it? Can I establish consectutive defensive lines? I will try and do the Finnish Army proud. Keep up the good work.

Chris, Thanks! Yes.. delaying action is what goes here I think, at least until the reinforcements arrives. Historically, the platoon in Rautamaki retreated behind the river and held the Russians there. Unfortunately, fights in SPWAW are much more bloody, so it's harder to withdraw troops.

Great scenario! Regards, Sami Korhonen http://www.winterwar.com
