Hmmm, you know what? You would be better off with the "Let's micromanage Distant Worlds" series from Larry Monte - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEZx9zuF9_4YE6SjyawMFYE-WOQkKSEF. In there you will truly learn the basics (and advanced techniques) of Distant Worlds, as Larry automates only minimum stuff. Even while watching I immediately spotted some places where I would automate myself and not bother micromanaging, but his approach teaches you the micro stuff and thus you know what to find where and how things work. You do not have to watch the whole series, say 10-15 videos should be enough (I am at 10 currently :)). Then you can watch Das24680's earlier Let's plays for Return of the Shakturi and Legends, he also has many basic and advanced techniques covered and is a good explainer in what he is doing. I must admint I watched them the other way around (now with the Micromanage videos), but that does not hurt I guess. And, I learned many many things myself from them. All in all, try not to overextend just for the sake of overextending, but rather focus on the key colonies and your "core". Do Diplomacy, make friends, attack enemies and pirates, upgrade your ships when necessary, try to go for techs that allow you to "see" around you and such...
