Antiscamp -> The Battle of Secluded Haunt (5/25/2013 9:56:05 PM)

The Fearsome Clan had been sitting in the Ackdarian neighbour system since before the Warp Era. They had long been a thorn in the side of the Expansive Ackdarian Republic, ever since the days when the Ackdarians took their first steps into space and those pirates demanded protection fees to let the fledgling republic alone. The Ackdarians responded in force as they successively built up their military might over the years, finally expelling the Fearsome Clan from the Ackdarian home system and destroying all their mining operations therein.

Over the time, as the Ackdarian Empire expanded, the Fearsome Clan regained its might and stepped up their war against the Ackdarian Republic. The pirates targeted newly built colonies for raids, took over Republican mining stations and caused havoc by sending fleets and raiding parties against soft targets. The Ackdarian Republic was forced to keep an expensive defense structure intact with defensive squadrons of military ships patrolling and guarding each of their colonized systems.

In the early years of the 2120's, the situation was desperate for the Ackdarian government. The economy was failing, due to high maintenance costs for ships and defensive bases in all parts of the empire. In the meantime, the Fearsome Clan stepped up their attacks even further; as an example, they raided the new colony at Ishandroo Peka five times within the years 2120-21. Something needed to be done about the pirate threat and the Ackdarian government was prepared to gamble it all on striking with force.

The First Defense Fleet, based at Sciibu, the Ackdarian home system, left in 2122 with only seven frigates, one destroyer and one very powerful alien cruiser for the pirate home base at Secluded Haunt. Dropping out of warp, the battle was intense from the start, hanging in the balance as the Ackdarian alien cruiser took most of the enemy fire. The enemy had a patrolling fleet of escorts and minor frigates that the Ackdarians destroyed in the first attack wave; enemy fighters from the star base were in support.

As the second phase of the battle commenced, the Ackdarians targeted the station itself, which also held a major fleet of pirate ships, in for refuelling. The Ackdarian alien cruiser was destroyed by the heavy enemy fire at this point, but the rest of the fleet pushed on, slowly taking down the stations' shields. Fighting was still intense and the enemy shields were still holding, when the pirate fleet inside the station finished its refuelling and counterattacked the Ackdarian fleet.

The pirate ships were disposed of, one by one, and the Ackdarian fleet could concentrate on the enemy space station. Its shields were now coming down at an accelerated pace; it's final fighters were shot down in trails of smoke and carnage. As the stations' shields diminished and it could no longer hold, the hull of the station was starting to give way. Hundreds of pirates perished at Secluded Haunt as the Ackdarians mercilessly fired their killing shots, breaking through and finally making the station itself along with all its crew disappear in an enormous explosion.

The Battle of Secluded Haunt was an event that ended a hundred years of threats to the Ackdarian Republic, it was an act of vengeance and of rage for what those pirates had accomplished and put the Ackdarian population through over the years. It ended an era in Ackdarian Republican history and saw the birth of another, an era of peace and prosperity in the region.

I was actually going to give this game up and abandon it. My economy is terrible and those Fearsome Clan pirates are everywhere. I gambled my best fleet on one last card - to take the pirate base out - and I won. I'm now going to continue this excellent game! Secluded Haunt was my first pirate base in Shadows! What a fight they gave me!

Beautifully written about the beauty of shadows [sm=happy0065.gif]

Thanks! I'm not one to usually overreact, but I was actually yelling my joy out loud when that base went up in flames. A hundred years of misery! [:D]

nicely done, recognise the feeling of elation once you actually managed to end such a threat

Antiscamp -> RE: The Battle of Secluded Haunt (5/26/2013 8:12:40 AM)

Thanks! They kept being a pain for the rest of the game, but not in the magnitude they used to. I was seriously irritated about pirate raids on my colonies and couldn't understand how they got through my defensive squadrons in space to land their troops. This was before I started shipping out land troops to my weaker colonies to garrison them. After that, I could hold off most pirate raids.

I took down another pirate base during this game too, but that was nowhere near as big and scary as this one.

I ended up losing the game to the Teekans. I still don't know what to do about my economy, which was in ruins for the whole of the end-game period. I ended up selling tech to other empires just to stay afloat.

The pirates dominated my game. They kept my empire busy and the other ones as well. I was never involved in a single war against another empire; and there were very few inter-imperial wars going on around me too. I didn't like that situation, so for the next game, I'm going to go with fewer pirates. In this game I generated normal amounts of pirates.
