I am new to FoF. I am having fun with the strategy, and I am using quick or instant battles.

I wonder about detailed battles. Are they fun tactical mini-games? Are the mechanics worth learning?

thanks,
John

Very much so. I will do about half-and-half. If it isn’t worth the effort of the detail battle, then I won’t go that route.

Detailed battles are great! They can take much longer than quick or instant
battles, but my results are better in detailed battles. I would recommend to
read this AAR:

It should be possible to play with settings making economics less detailed
if you are play time constrained to have more time for detailed battles.

I agree with the others. Detailed battles add more depth to the game. But a large detailed battle can take awhile to fight. I've also noticed the AI is fairly predictable. After you fight a few battles you pick up on it. For example, the Southern AI always splits its brigades in two. Seems regardless of initial deployments, the Southern AI tries hard to maneuver its forces in such a way it fights facing south. The Southern AI also love to "charge." I detail the small and meduim battles but don't want to take the time for the extra big ones.

Excellent! I will dig into the rules and give detailed battles a try.

Thanks all for your responses.

When/if you start with detailed battles, I suggests turning the "detailed report" on in the menu within the detailed battle.
Although it can be somewhat annoying in the long run to click away the reports for every exchange of fire, it does teach you a bit about what effects your units performance in battle.
And I agree with the others, the detailed battle is outstanding.

I've hardly played this game even though I've had it four years. I was disappointed you couldn't use the detailed battle system on its own for standalone battles. I think this was a missed trick by the developer - it might have got people making battle scenarios to download and popularise the game.

Does anybody know if you can mod it to do this?

If you like the basic look and feel of the detailed battles in FoF, take a look at John Tiller’s Battleground Civil War. The fundamental battle/game engine is very similar.
