irished -> Critical Crash (5/30/2013 4:01:26 PM)

Hi when playing distant worlds shadows the game crashes my entire pc not just to desktop!!! I have to restart my computer everytime! this has been happening through all the updates. Never had this problem with the other expansions and it only happens while playing distant worlds shadows.....please help.

I have Vista 64 bit operating system quadcore I7 cpu, nvidia geforce 285 gtx, 6 gig ddr 3 memory,2 TB harddrive, Realtek audio onboard sound.

What happens when it crashes: does the screen freeze, show an error message, etc? The more information you can provide the better the team can assist [:)]

My first guess for this kind of crash would be overheating - is that a possibility? When was the last time you cleaned the dust from your GPU fans etc?

Cheers

Pip

Hi no it's not overheating as i have said i play lots of other games that require more intensive GPU Power then this game and it does not crash!, what i have noticed is that this crash seems to happen more often when the game is saving.

I get a blue screen informing me that this is either a hardware or software failure that any recent change can do this! the only thing that i have changed recently is putting shadows on my computer and this is the only time i get this form of crash.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Critical Crash (5/30/2013 9:20:59 PM)

The game itself is not going to cause a blue screen - that's typically an indication of a problem at the hardware or driver level. Hardware problems can develop and if you are a gamer you will most likely have recently installed a new game when a hardware problem starts. With that said, let's troubleshoot this a bit more.

Is there any crash log? Please see the tech support FAQ for information on how to find that.

DOes the blue screen give you any information on the type of crash? You can typically look this up to get an indication of what may be causing the blue screen.

Have you tried updating your drivers?

Regards,

- Erik

The blue screen says it's a video hardware crash!, that it caused a pagefault in a non paged area? Why should this happen in just this game and not any other, I noticed when i installed shadows that i also had to update Microsoft XNA framwork and something else like that.

A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

Hi irished

As Erik mentioned above, this is almost certainly a hardware or driver issue.

BCCode 117 specifically relates to video card driver issues. See here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/bccode117-assistence-suddenly-started/da9a1e69-bf18-4e5b-b6ff-216cf4a092c4

Distant Worlds Shadows uses a lot of graphic memory, and at times does push a lot of graphical data around on the hardware bus, so it can give your card a good workout in different areas to some other games. This might uncover a problem with your video card or configuration that did not previously show up.

You may also have a power supply that is insufficient for your video card - other games may work, but that's no guarantee that it will always work.

Ensure that you have the latest driver for your video card. If that does not fix the problem, then you might need to open your case and check that your card is properly seated in the slot, cables properly connected, clean out any dusty components, etc.

Thanks
Elliot

Hi an update on this issue!...this was as you say a driver issue caused by an Avast Internet security update, it was really bad and had to take the drastic measure of completely wiping my harddrive and reinstalling everything, now i have to get redownload all distant worlds games again and get serial codes etc.
!!!!WARNING!!!!

AVAST INTERNET SECURITY CAUSES MORE PROBLEMS THEN IT SOLVES
