I feel kinda stupid...
I never managed to get my on board floatplanes to assist in a night time bombing. How is this done?

Miller -> RE: Night Bombardement (6/3/2013 11:53:32 AM)

Set them to night operations and recon of the base to be hit.

Historiker -> RE: Night Bombardement (6/3/2013 12:04:52 PM)

I tried. It didn't work so far.

Check the weather... float planes are susceptible to weather conditions far more so than carrier based planes. I get them to fly only about 25% of the time... so don't worry about it... you are doing the right thing, now you just have to get the planes to do so. Also remember the pilots have to be of relatively good quality. We all worry about our carrier pilots but forget about our float pilots, until something like this DOESN'T happen!

Allright. So bad luck, not bad settings.

I can live with that [:)]

This happens to me when I'm in a hurry. The interface will let you change mission to Recon, but still have 100% of the plane's time used up with ASW and Search or Rest in the settings below. Or, if you have two planes and only 20% of their slack is left to do Recon, you aren't going to get it very often. I'd like a nag message when there's no capacity to do what you just ordered, but the onus is on the player to notice.

Lokasenna -> RE: Night Bombardement (6/3/2013 4:28:35 PM)

I set mine to Night Ops, sometimes set range to 0, and always Recon with no patrol levels. Don't need to target the base you wish to bombard.

Note that they won't play spotter if you happen to bombard in the morning movement phase rather than the evening... Happened to me once even though my TF started with a hex to spare on the full speed run for the first movement phase. Was rather odd - the ships must have had to refuel escorts at sea and I didn't notice, or something.

I always to set the base. Don't know if it helps or not, but in the DEI there are a lot of bases in range. I don't set Range to 0. Never know if they get a look on the run in.

In my AAR I just posted a bombardment where the recon worked. It's an example of the message you get. If you don't get the message, no recon (I think.)

Yeah, I've had times where the planes haven't gone up to spot. When I set the range to 0, I do it because I don't want the plane flying off to somewhere a CAP might shoot it down (unlikely though that is at night) or crashing from a tiny increase in fatigue due to greater range... But I'm usually spotting with F1M2 Petes, and the range on those is pretty much 0 anyway so I don't spend the click-time.

I was under the impression that spotting was a separate/special check in the code for which the only requisites were bombardment is occurring, night ops (or day if you bombard during the second phase...), and set to recon. Then there would be the usual stuff like morale or weather checks to see if the plane flew, and then spotting. However, if the plane is instead sent up on a normal Recon mission and just automatically returns to Recon the bombardment TF's target hex when the bombardment occurs... *shrug*

I'm pretty skeptical of one plane providing spotting duties for more than just its mother ship, but michaelm says it works that way (in the beta at least) so it's probably true. I just don't see the message for more than the first ship so I don't believe it.

I don't think I've ever seen more than one either.

jmalter -> RE: Night Bombardement (6/3/2013 10:03:31 PM)

In almost all cases, the BombTF's flagship will be the 1st ship to shoot, so always put its FPs on Night Recon, you can keep some/all of the other ships' FPs doing their NavSearch/ASW thing.

In the rare case where my BombTF has a flagship w/ no FPs, I put all available FPs on Night Recon to get the best chance at spotting assistance. I'm of the opinion that once you see the "Floatplane acting as spotter" line in the Combat Report msgs, all ships below that line are getting the spotting advantage.

TF speed (and ops points used prior to the bombardment) will affect the amount of ammo the ships use - a Cruise-speed BombTF will use ~33% its shells, a Full-speed BombTF will use ~80% (retaining a red-level minimum). Useful if you expect some surface action on the way back to base.

now that's good information....TF speed (and ops points used prior to the bombardment) will affect the amount of ammo the ships use - a Cruise-speed BombTF will use ~33% its shells, a Full-speed BombTF will use ~80% (retaining a red-level minimum).
