Osito -> How can I stop pirate raids from being successful? (6/18/2013 12:13:52 AM)

I'm not familiar with the pirate playstyle, as I have been playing only empires since the release of Shadows. However, I've noticed that pirate raids seem to be successful even when I kill all their attacking ships.

For example, in my present game, I have a defensive base which is completely obliterating all the pirate attackers, but every single time they seem to take money, or resources or even tech.

How do I stop the raids from being successful?

Osito

As far as I am aware you have to defeat their troops. So if the ships manage to launch assault pods which make it down to the planet you will have to beat them on the ground. Killing the ships after the pods have landed does not end the raid which is being fought out at the colony (or base for that matter).

Ok, thanks, I'll take a look at that.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen pirates manage to successfully raid my colonies despite me defeating the ground troops. Of course, these instances could be me being preoccupied with a well defended colony being raided, while one that isn't defended is being raided simultaneously. I could've sworn that the pirate raid pop-ups said that the colony that repelled the raid was looted though. I'll try to pay more attention next time to see if I'm right or just crazy.

Once you have the basic ship tech (shields, armor, reactors and a decent weapon of choice) put these at the top of your list, start at 1 and work through to 7, once you get used to the game a bit more and your chosen race you will know when to get started on this as you will need the population to get the centers and facilities built, but these 7 will make sure no raid causes you any problems once they are on the ground. Once you are used to the tech tree a bit more, aim for the increases to 50+, get the planetary defense increased first if you can then just work up the tree, working the increases into your overall weapons research.

I've had raids instantly succeed on my new world as soon as the pods touch the ground, even if I have some troops loaded onto it.

Same here, they don't have to win to "win". I just don't know how they get the loot if all their ships and troops are destroyed near my planet and I have space superiority.

It is extremely annoying.

1: We repelled the nasty pirates
2: The nasty pirates raided our colony and got away with...

I have been told this is probably a "partial successful raid" and that it is supposed to be like this [&:]

DarkThug -> RE: How can I stop pirate raids from being successful? (6/18/2013 9:32:35 AM)

I believe Repelling the raid is not about killing all pirates on the ground. It is about killing them fast enough. If you took too long to wipe them out, the raid will be successful anyway.

My early colony defense force usually consist of 4 Trooper with 1&2 upgrade (refer to Darkspire's picture)
It can fend off any early pirate raid(1-2 raiding party). If more slip in, well, it is 50/50 whether the pirate success or not.
Once the colony mature, I increase it to 8 troopers and I never have problem with raid anymore with or without defending fleet. I can let them land at will (If they still bother with said colony).

One question though, Is Planetary defense platform worth bothering with ? It cost me 4 time more maintenance than a regular troop yet less than 2 time total strength (offense+defense).
I feel getting 4 more infantries is way better than a single defense platform. Better defense strength. Easier to split apart and transport to other colonies in need. You can use them for offense as well.

Post the successful raid with all pirate vessels destroyed in space combat as a bug in the tech support section. I have also noticed that the Pirates can steal technology even when their vessels have all been destroyed in combat and no enemy troops have landed on my newly colonized world.

Unfortunately, by the time I thought about saving the game the problem stopped happening, so I can't provide anything to reproduce it. I had no troops on the planet under attack (which might explain why this happened), but on the other hand I didn't see any indication that the pirates were landing troops. Anyway, at the moment, I don't have enough evidence to show that what I was seeing was a bug.

Once I have the tech outlined in my previous post and the facilities start appearing on the colonies I still get the odd one or two that are successful, but to me it seems about right, I think everyone here is tending to look at this situation as ground troops vs ground troops, it isn't, it is about colony ground troops vs pirate raiders, they perform covert attacks and smuggling attacks for a living, it makes sense that a few will get away with some cash or resources even with a well stocked out colony ground troop, raiders create a diversion and a small ship evades detection and manages to steal some credits and / or some resources, makes sense to me. You only have to look at sci-fi movies to see how many times a small ship gets through an overwhelming force and scores a victory, like the Millenium Falcon, I personally think the balance is about right at present.

I don't think it is something wrong with them being partial successful, but if we defeat them, they should not get away with stuff. The messages appear at the exact same moment too. The game lacks a proper message for the partial successes.

Three outcomes

1: Successful
2: Partial success
3: Defeated

It seems outcome 2 is shown by spamming both the 1 and 3 messages. The game can be confusing enough even if it does not print misleading messages like this.

feelotraveller -> RE: How can I stop pirate raids from being successful? (6/18/2013 12:50:28 PM)

Okay, I must have been pretty lucky so far. Never had 2. pop. Seen 3 a few times though. [:(]

That's just my point, a large and well trained colony ground force should be defeating them once the tech has started to be increased, just because the raiders and the ships they arrived in have been defeated does not mean that they should not get way with something every now and again for the points I outlined above, I think on average now about 13 years into a new game I am getting maybe 1 in 20 that still manage to get away with a few thousand credits or resources. I can only think that the messages are not updating quick enough to give the player an accurate assessment of the situation, which is not just a problem in this situation but in a few other areas within the game as well.

Planetary Defense Units.

Are they worth the cost? It depends. The 25% defense bonus is applied to ALL the defending units - infantry plus the PDUs. So PDU aren't worth much if you don't have many troops but they could be worth a lot if they are supporting a large garrison. And the defense bonus doesn't stack with multiple PDUs.

The other bonus a PDU provides is "anti aircraft fire" - they get "free" shots at invading troops and can cause losses before the other side lands on the planet.

I use them whenever I have a garrison of 8 or more units. Less than that, I feel that the PDU isn't as good as extra infantry units. But that is a general feeling - I don't have any test to back it up. So I will have one PDU after 8 units, and a few times I might add a second one if I have or need a really big garrison. I don't think I have ever used 3 units on one planet.

So if you think your going to have a hot zone, yes, they are worth it. If you expect a large invasion or frequent invasions, yes. But as just a general garrison unit, no.

And they are really big to transport around and that can be a pain.
