lando005 -> Ship naming (7/6/2013 3:11:17 PM)

Hi I'm still very new to the game and I had some question about ship naming. Namely from what I noticed resupply,troop transports and destroyers and below do not get unique ship names I want to change this. From what I've read so far in the forums I may be able to manually enter ship names in the shipNames.txt file but I was wondering if there was another way to go about this. Obviously the computer is pulling the current ship names from somewhere and my guess is that there is a list of approved ship types that are allowed to get names off of that list, I want to know if there is a way to add the other ship types to that list and enable their ability to get named.

You will have to set up a theme with the shipnames.txt file in it. There are a few to choose from in the modding section, including both my Royal Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy themed files.

It's not hard to set up, and can be accomplished by simply copying the relevant files from the original into a new custom theme, then adding in the shipnames.txt file of your choosing.

Perhaps I will release a ready to go version that all players have to do is unzip into their customization folders in the near future.

Yes I read some of your post before making this thread. But where are the other ship names located? The one the computer uses for the ships that normally get names?

I think I understand your confusion, although the shipnames.txt in the root directory is empty that is where the names for all ships and bases are stored if you want to put your own custom names in, you will need to copy that file and then edit the copy. Have a look at one of Shark7's shipnames.txt files, that will make things a lot clearer, then you can rename all your ships and bases to your own choosing. As Shark7 said, you will need to create a basic theme to use the shipnames.txt file though, there is no other way other than manually renaming each ship or base from within the game.

Ok so where could I fine that file?

Shark7 -> RE: Ship naming (7/7/2013 2:34:38 AM)

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2467645

just unzip it to take a look at the file structure for the file itself. The DL is in the 4th post IIRC.

lando005 -> RE: Ship naming (7/7/2013 6:32:10 PM)

Now when you say the names have to follow a theme does that mean all the names or just the names for a ship type? for example if I name all my escorts after birds, and all my destroyers war themed names

I looked over your file, fortunately I don't believe I will need that many names. What would happen if I tried to use multiple themes in the file?

I managed to translate your last post but this has got me stumped.

Could you try to make the question a little easier to understand?
The shipnames.txt does not have any references to a theme nor to any race, so not sure where you are getting the idea of multiple themes in the file from. You can only have one shipnames.txt in the root directory of your theme, but you can have other themes with a different shipnames.txt in each one although you can only have one theme active at any one time.

The whole point in me putting so many names in there was so that you would be very unlikely to use them all. Even in my sandbox games I've not gone through the whole list of names for any military class, though civilian ships have come close a few times.

lando005 -> RE: Ship naming (7/8/2013 11:59:24 AM)

What I meant by multiple themes was, with the file Shark made all the names were Japanese. That's all well and good but I was wondering if I could have a mix of names. I've made this file as an example I was hoping you could tell me if I was on the right track.

The file you uploaded is fine, no problems with it. The easiest way to figure out how many names you need is have a look at the last few saves of your last game and see how many ships you have of each class and then add 20-50 on top of that number so that you have enough names for each class, on a 400-10x10 I can end up with about 250+ destroyers, 100 escorts and frigates so in my case I would have 300 names for the destroyer class and 150 each for the escorts and frigates as an example.

clarification" "theme" refers to the name matrixGames uses to label a grouping of modifications to the vanilla game. HAs nothing to do with 'theme' in a literary sense. The game's theme is a grouping of modifications that the game engine then uses to import (inject?) said content (of the 'theme') into the user's game when that 'theme' is selected. The actual content of the 'theme' can include names (for ships or stars): Greek gods, (Brit); weather types (Japanese), states (USA), etc. So a ship name list could have a mix of all these types of names.

What about Carriers? I just noticed that they weren't listed in the shipNames flie. Do they share their names with Capital ships?

They are in there, under the subheading Carriers:

The RN version of my shipnames.text file was updated to include carrier names, but as the .txt file is often a jumbled wall of letters, sometimes it is hard to find stuff.

I did a search and didn't see Carriers mentioned at all in the shipName file, couldn't I just add a row for Carriers there?

Shark7 -> RE: Ship naming (7/9/2013 4:04:53 AM)

Look in post 27 of that thread for the updated version, the attachment in post 4 is the original pre-legends version.

I also think it may be time to post all my mods in a new thread to make them easier to find anyway.

lando005 -> RE: Ship naming (7/9/2013 4:18:43 AM)

Not to get off topic but have you ever had a system with a missing planet? I can see the ring that shows the orbit of the planet and the system is accounting for an extra planet being there but I just don't see it. I was editing the system when I thought I created a planet but I didn't see it show up but there is an orbit for it on my mini map
