Or the Death of the Houston, alternate title. The entire Asiatic Fleet was able to assemble into two task forces, and run in on the landings at Cagayan, Mindinao. Houston and company took on a superior cruiser force, and did fairly well beating it up, in spite of having their T crossed. The later force managed to engage the enemy CVL/CVE force (dai ni kiddo butai). Meanwhile the enemy, which did no great damage yesterday at Hawaii, did not return to finish the job. Instead they set out at high speed to box in the US carriers, whom they had brief contact with and had some idea where it might be. Correctly guessing the US ships might head SW at full speed - the most difficult vector for them - they did the same thing - and long range PBY and B-17 searches have them on the correct vector. The Japanese have tankers, the Allies do not; the Allies are faster and less likely to take system damage at full speed; this may be an interesting race.
