Cyrille -> Best places for drop mines and best mines luck - Mine ty 93 hit enemy CV ! (1/11/2003 5:45:44 PM)

I have placed some mine type 93 just at 'Basilaki Island', just in front of Gili Gili, the result is more than lucky :)

One enemy CV hit a mine, one DD sunk and 2 CA hit mines too :D :D ... and that's just a start I hope.

After I checked a little I believe that's a good hex because it's needed to pass here for leave Gili Gili. I have now a good reason to not take it. Btw, yes, I play against AI, against human it would have been less efficient.

I am also suprised because I seen that IA clear mine field with DD or maybe it's just because they pass here, I have seen no MSW at this place yet.

First question, what are you favorites places for land mines ??

second question, what are your 'best' result with some mines ??

Cheers,

All hexes around Guadalcanal are good places to lay mines. There's always many TF going up and down. The problem is that your ships will also be hit by all those mines, even yours.
I haven't sunk any enemy ship with a mine hit, but I've forced some allied bombardment TF to retreat. And sometimes, a damaged ship is not able to get out of your land based aircrafts range and you can sink it the next morning.
Anyway, mines are only a little help. There's nothing like a good air combat TF.

I'm playing as the Japanese against the AI and have taken Lunga and Tulagi. Isent my subs and MLs to heavily mine the passages coming into Guadalcanal from Luganville. the AI has tried 4 times to send a bombardment group into Lunga and everytime ran into my mine fields. Each time I experienced hits on 3 separate combat ships - usually DDs but in one of the sorties 2 CAs hit mines. In all cases the bombardment groups turned back: Against the AI it seems you can establish a defensive mine barrier against surface attack.

My Best mining trick, was trying to close the path to Lunga, the only opening to the IJN that was left, the 3 DM's were a day out, a PT TF and combat TF are sitting in Lunga, just in case

well, the IJN BB fleet comes in and jumps the PT's, then battles the Combat fleet, wins both, then drops a few shells on Lunga

but as the game works in phases, as the IJN moved in, so did the minelayers, as it is time for the IJN to leave, they run smack into a large minefield, 2 BB's, 2 CA's and a DD take hits, breaking the force into at least 4 smaller groups, and most do not get out of range by daytime, now it is the Allies turn, the 2 CA's are sunk, a few DD's left to protect the cripples go down, and while the BB's make it back to port, they are not going anywhere any time soon

think this was from the Green Hell scen

Veldor -> Shallow Hexes? (1/13/2003 12:39:30 PM)

I know mines dissapear fast in deep water.. but in one of my AI games I placed a bunch in (40,40) the hex near Guadalcanal marked "Taivu"... It doesn't look to me like a deep water hex but about 6 turns later the mine symbol dissappeared.. Anyone know whats up with that? Do mines dissappear in time even in non-darkblue hexes? I thought it would be a good hex because all allied traffic to lunga/tulagi has to pass through this hex.

Buchon -> minefield size (1/13/2003 3:43:38 PM)

Small minefields, like those placed by submarines, use to dissapear quite fast, even in shallow waters. And don't forget enemy MSW.
To be effecient laying a minefield, use your ML or DM, but remenber you should re-built it each time an enemy TF hits it, especially if they're Allied.
