So, how do you REALLY turn off Fleet automation?

I Select no automation for my fleets, but they are only marginally under my control.
For instance, in Shadows, I built a Fleet that had the sole Purpose of destroying all the Hidden Pirate Bases and Fortresses, and the occasional Indie Colony. Simple, eh? 4 Capitols, 2 Carriers, 4 Troop Transports, carrying ~360K Troop strength.

The Fleet flies in, lands the troops, I start the attack. Base and Fortresses are at about 150K strength. When the fight ends some long time later, I look to go pick up the troops and move on... except the idiotic Fleet is parked in mid space, all the way across the empire, and low on fuel to boot. Once, forgivable, twice annoying, every single damned assault and it is beyond pardon.

So, why does the game only pretend to allow you to turn off automation of the Fleets?
I am sure those empty Transports were really vital to fight whatever it was they were fighting in the middle of nowhere.

A fleet have 3 automations.
1. The fleet self, the AI can send them to attack enemy targets.
2. Fleet stance, if you want a passive fleet, select target
3. Ship stance, target, when attacked or nearby target should be ok.

Maybe I missed some setting, but it wasn't even a case of Military Advisors suggesting an attack. The fleet which should have been passive/defend system, just took off on some Mission many systems away. And did so more than once.

Check and see what you have set the refuel option at.I think if it reaches that point the fleet will head to a refuel point no matter what stance you are set at.

Hi CyclopsSlayer,

It should certainly be possible to get a fleet to stay put if you want it to. The best way to figure out what happened and whether or not you missed a setting would be for you to upload a save file for us, ideally right before the fleet started its attack, but even one just after you found it in mid space, as long as you hadn't changed its settings could be useful.

Likely suspects are the "refuel when x% of fleet needs fuel" and "set fleet range" settings - check those. IIRC the first is accessed through the esc menu, and the latter is one of the icons in the bottom left when the fleet is selected.

Will try and recreate the situation, watching more closely, and capture the savefile.
