CrusssDaddy -> Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 3:22:28 AM)

Warspite emailed this trailer to me with the note, "Yo DAWG check dis out bro, the action is SICK!!!!! Crazy stunts and special affects dude looks historicol accurite to me...!!!" I think it's repulsive but I'll let the rest of you judge. [WARNING: Some of you old farts might consider the header slightly risque, click the link only once safely nestled in a private area of your nursing home.]

Dear all

I have no intention of clicking on any link provided by this idiot troll so I have no idea what's in it (or whether it is even safe to do so).

However, and for the avoidance of doubt, I did not e-mail this - or anything else - to him.

navwarcol -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 4:13:22 AM)

I definitely cannot imagine someone from England emailing "Yo Dawg..." anything lol. Warspite, are you a secret rapper?![:D]

navwarcol -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 4:14:52 AM)

Poor crusssdaddy.. you are going to have to be a little smarter to get people to click your links. Wargamers are probably a lot smarter than you in general.

[:D] I liked the MkIV's and the He-111 crashing.

I'm not sure about all the burning people though that is very grim.

But it looks like a good flick. [:D]

I think that last shot of the burning dudes advanced it from regrettably overwrought to laughably absurd. A year from now this will end up on television and you could make a drinking game of it, like slam a shot of Stoli every time a peasant soldier gazes nobly toward the burning horizon, or finish your beer each instance of a German officer being cruel.

CrusssDaddy -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 8:07:35 PM)

If you ladies search "Stalingrad film 2013" on YouTube there are additional trailers, but the one linked above is the best.

Centuur -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 8:41:34 PM)

I do know that running burning Russian soldiers was something which happened in Stalingrad... My uncle from Austria was in the "Sturmpioniere" and did put this in his diary, together with a lot of other very grim things which he witnessed there. Yes, it might look laughable and over the top in this trailer, but it doesn't come close to the horrors described in his diary:

How about a wounded German soldier lying directly between the Russian and German lines screaming his head of for over a day and nobody could go and help him because of Russian soldiers firing on any soldier who would be so foolish to try to save the guy... Or the hanging of a German captured soldier by Russian soldiers in full view of the other side, but they couldn't fire on them because of the long distance... or the description of the results of a grenade thrown into a cellar, believed to be occupied by Russian soldiers, but which was occupied by civilians... Or when his friend from high school got beheaded due to a panel of metal collapsing from the roof of a building... Or the crazy SS/MP soldiers executing any soldier who wasn't wounded badly enough for desertion at the airfield which was the only way out of the place... Or the friendly fire accidents (which happened plenty, probably on both sides, because sometimes the enemy was only one wall away...).
The daily struggle to get food and wood for fires to stay warm was a real stress. Effectively every dead body was searched for items which the soldiers might use to stay alive.

My uncle was hit by grenadesplitters in his left arm and his upper back, effectively making his left arm totally useless, but was able to walk 15 km.'s to the airfield and got transportation out of Stalingrad two days before the last German plane left Stalingrad.
Out of all the boys (230) which got conscripted into the Sturmpionier out of his village, only 14 survived the war and the Soviet imprisonment afterwards...

Let us just say that Stalingrad was a very cruel, very bad place for any soldier or civilian to be in...

navwarcol -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (7/30/2013 9:12:42 PM)

Peter, My (great) uncle also was there, and I agree. He was an Oberstleutnant on the staff of the 94 (Sachsen) Infantry Division, and I read so many horrible things in his journal as well. The absolute cruelest example of modern warfare on both sides there. I am glad that your uncle came through it.

My Austrian cousin (by marriage) lost her father at Stalingrad. She was only a baby at the time so never knew him.....

It is well that war is so terrible - otherwise we would grow too fond of it.

It's ironic to deploy this quote in this thread, since the film's aesthetic is essentially warporn. This film is VERY fond of war.

brian brian -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/1/2013 7:19:01 PM)

ahh, you mean like rain on your wedding day, or a traffic jam when you're already late? don'tcha think?

10,000 f---ing spoons... ALL I NEED IS A KNIFE, MAN!!!

Neilster -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/2/2013 6:44:10 AM)

Somebody should have told Alanis Morissette that those things aren't ironic. They're just bad luck. Irony is when you are a town planner, on your way to collect a reward for your town's traffic efficiency and you are late because you are stuck in a traffic jam.

Cheers, Neilster

Titan -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/2/2013 9:51:54 AM)

Not bad, alittle to much flavour and posturing to ever get into the league of classic WW2 films such as Cross of Iron, and perhaps saving private Ryan etc which are more gritty

paulderynck -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/2/2013 10:23:53 PM)

The Heinkel and its crash site are awfully reminiscent of Enemy at the Gates.

Extraneous -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/3/2013 12:03:21 AM)

If it is like "The Star" (a 2002 film directed by Emmanuil Kazakevich) it will be as accurate as possible but don't become attached to any of the characters.

It's a Russian film, directed by a Russian, about the battle that turned the tide of the Great Patriotic War in the favor the Soviet Union.

Western films focus on the victory of the individual.

Soviet/Russian films focus on the victory of the state.

Shannon V. OKeets -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/3/2013 1:26:03 AM)

I'm reading a book on Barbarossa by Clark, which I have found informative. One of the points that he makes is that Zhukov held back his armor and many other units during the battle for Stalingrad. He only committed as much infantry as were absolutely necessary to "hold on".

They were also putting green units in the frontline farther up the Don (near Voronezh) to give them some combat experience. Then they pulled them out and positioned them for the coming offensive to cut off the German 6th Army. They did this so much that Kluge (the German commander opposite Voronezh) thought that a major offensive was coming in his section because his intelligence officers kept identifying new Russian forces opposite them.

The net result was that the counterattack at Stalingrad was by troops that had been built up for just that purpose over a period of months.

Neilster -> RE: Upcoming Stalingrad film trailer (8/3/2013 5:28:49 AM)

I think I've read that too. It was good.

My pincers are about to snap shut behind the 6th Army at Stalingrad.

I love the flexibility of The Operational Art of War 3 and the sheer number of scenarios on offer.

Cheers, Neilster
