CrackSabbath -> What have I done???? (8/4/2013 5:49:16 PM)

So after a long period of time lurking in this forum, reading reviews, checking out gameplay videos on YouTube and general waffling, I've finally taken the plunge and purchased WitP:AE. I had originally intended to wait and get the new Flashpoint Campaigns game when it comes out soon (?), and get this over the Christmas holiday.

Anyway, I was up 'till 2:30am playing the Coral Sea scenario on this beast of a game, and got my ass thoroughly whipped. Coool! I'm working my way through the manual on my e-reader, and I'm going to give Coral Sea another try soon.

I should've got this game a long time ago. Give me a few months [:)] and I'll be looking for an opponent in the PBEM forum.

Welcome to the Dark Side. Your gaming life will never be the same.

DOCUP -> RE: What have I done???? (8/4/2013 6:21:53 PM)

You sold your personal life to the AE devil. Welcome to hotel AE you may check in but you may never leave.

Hemmingway -> RE: What have I done???? (8/4/2013 6:31:56 PM)

Welcome! I am very much a lurker here too, but have been playing for the last 3 years. I only have time to play against the AI (I play as the Allies), but it is far and away the best game going. You are in for a great experience and the end of your normal life. WITPAE is pretty much my second career...

Mac Linehan -> RE: What have I done???? (8/4/2013 7:01:58 PM)

CrackSabbath -

Welcome to AE and the forums. You will not be disappointed, not only is AE thrilling and addictive, the forum membership will help you in every way they can.

And:

It is quite the norm for a new player to lose his or her ships in the Coral Sea scenario; your electronic ships, aircraft and Land Combat Units will forgive you - they come back fully restored to life the next time around.

Glad to have you with us, Sir!

Mac

CrackSabbath -> RE: What have I done???? (8/4/2013 7:15:45 PM)

Thanks all! One of the main positive deciding factors for me was the massive support and activity of the player community for a game that has been around for quite some time. That speaks volumes for the quality of the game. Be seeing you all soon.

COYI.

Canoerebel -> RE: What have I done???? (8/4/2013 8:08:25 PM)

Welcome to the fraternity! Thanks for joining the gaming ranks, brining another comrade-in-arms into the fold.

You're right about the game. It's crack! It's crack! It's crack! I can't tell you how many nights I've had sleep cut (A) Short (B) Very Short while awaiting a turn from my current opponent. I'm 52 years old and generally responsible and able to excercise self control, but this spectacular game is....well, spectacular.

You're also right about the Forum community. Just outstanding. Oh, we've lost some old timers (and regained some - AU Tiger!), but there has been a huge influx of new folks over the past year or so. This game and the community shows no sign of quit. After four years (or eleven years if you count WitP and UV), this is clearly entered into the realm of the classic.

Welcome to the asylum.

A standing order for pizza delivery is a good idea. As is a standing order or a dozen roses to be delivered to your significant other.

Maybe playing on a laptop so you can take it with you when nature calls......

Always do! Also bring the laptop when you travel so you can keep on sending turns to your opponent :-)

I actually pretty much bought one to do it :P!

jeffk3510 -> RE: What have I done???? (8/5/2013 4:57:57 PM)

Congrats on buying the game. It will eat up more of your free time than you'll care to admit. Very very addicting game. I wish I had more time to play it.

Yes sir on the lap top!

Lecivius -> RE: What have I done???? (8/5/2013 5:20:30 PM)

Scary that people buy a lap top JUST to play this game, when they are away from home. Also says something about the game [:D]

I think it's more the deciding factor rather than the sole reason.

Canoerebel is spot on! I find I spend as much time in the forum as playing the game! The fellows here always come through. Hazaa for the forum-ites!

True. Of course I use it for other stuff also.

I do that too! One time I was up at three in the morning to watch the replay and get the turn done before work. Canīt even count the nights I have been tossing and turning because I did something risky.

I even dream about the bloody game.

Sure sounds like crack! [:D]

Luckily once you get some weird irrational/unlucky losses, the withdrawal is pretty quick :P..

leehunt27@bloomberg.net -> RE: What have I done???? (8/6/2013 1:45:56 PM)

Its a great game, but don't wait to play PBEM small scenarios. Jump right into Coral Sea, Guadacanal etc. Also the manual is a helpful reference but the forums and faq's here will teach you the most arguably.

Treetop64 -> RE: What have I done???? (8/7/2013 5:24:49 AM)

You don't merely "play" this game. This game hires you for free, full-time employment, then demands that you marry it.

Welcome!

Ward reappeared?? That's great news... somehow a 70's sitcom theme song is now running through my head!

kaleun -> RE: What have I done???? (8/7/2013 3:41:31 PM)

Welcome.
The only bad part about this game is that I can't get my significant other excited about it.
Not only it is addictive, it is also very expensive when you factor in the insurmountable need to buy just about everything published on the pacific war (I have two copies of Conways, one at my home and one at my second home)

John 3rd -> RE: What have I done???? (8/8/2013 12:39:17 AM)

Run AWAY!

Terminus -> RE: What have I done???? (8/8/2013 12:44:38 AM)

Personally, I've gotten over the urge to buy everything Pacific War-themed. It took a while, though...

CrackSabbath -> RE: What have I done???? (8/9/2013 8:59:41 PM)

So, I played Coral Sea again and got a victory, and just suffered a minor defeat (if that's the exact term, I haven't been getting much sleep lately) in the Aleutians campaign. I was a bit too timid in my amphib assault, and a bit too agressive w/my air ops.

I'm underway in the Guadalcanal campaign. The Marines have siezed Tulagi & Lunga point. I'm know trying to figure out why my SeaBees and base force won't load into my Amphib TF. Back to the manual!!

catwhoorg -> RE: What have I done???? (8/9/2013 9:09:55 PM)

Amphib = combat mode
Transport = strategic mode

Chickenboy -> RE: What have I done???? (8/9/2013 9:32:23 PM)

Also, where are you trying to load 'em?  Loading them on a port size=0 will be difficult to impossible.  If you're so stuck, maybe have them build the port to the size necessary to re-embark another amphibious TF?

topeverest -> RE: What have I done???? (8/10/2013 1:47:42 AM)

Surrender your soul at the door, and welcome to the addiction!!!!!

CrackSabbath -> RE: What have I done???? (8/10/2013 5:01:24 AM)

Apparently I gave up my sould when I started playing D&D in the 6th grade.

I'm tring to load them in Noumea, which has a port size of 7. I have the troops in combat mode already, and made Lunga their target. BTW, they're just not showing up on the list at all, only the S. Pac HQ does. Weird.

Chickenboy -> RE: What have I done???? (8/10/2013 2:42:26 PM)

CrackSabbath,

Are your troops that you're trying to load from a restricted or are they from an unrestricted HQ? If restricted, you aren't permitted to move them and will need to change their status to unrestricted (hope you've got some political points in the bank). Otherwise, I can't think of a reason why combat prepped troops wouldn't board a suitable amphibious TF in a port the size of Noumea.

CrackSabbath -> RE: What have I done???? (8/11/2013 5:46:30 AM)

Ahhh! That's it. I've got a fair amount of political points left too. I'm just beginning to peel the layers back on this beast. Thanks Chickenboy!

p.s. Any relation to the Chickenlady (sorry, I'm having a Kids in the Hall flashback).
