Playing against the AI, it made the mistake of putting a carrier task force a little too close to shore near Lunga, which in late 1942 is a major Allied base.

The PT boats sallied forth, and in an engagement where they suffered about 50% casualties, put three torpedoes into the Ryujo and she is sunk.

I'll happily take that trade.

Whats the best return you have had for PT boats ? They appear to be gold in the close waters of the Solomon Islands.

I my(Japan) game with Docup(Allies) after almost 600 turns Allies manage to sunk DD and send BB to shipyard for 5 month long repairs.

PT are very dangerous in nigh battles with low moon. Especially when they manage to surprise enemy. I must say they are PITA. Sending ships against them is always risky.

nashvillen -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/5/2013 4:02:07 PM)

I had a PT boat in one engagement absorb a valuable 18" round from the Yamato.

Does that count? [:D]

Also much easier to replace PT that rearm 18" round

The rearming is the hard part, indeed!

Lecivius -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/5/2013 4:52:12 PM)

I seem to recall an AAR, or just a post, where Yamato took it on the chin from these & went down. An honest to God David vs. Goliath story.

jeffk3510 -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/5/2013 4:56:55 PM)

It was in Greyjoy's game vs Rader...right around GCanal area I think.

Sieppo -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/5/2013 7:43:18 PM)

Some allied xAK's took multiple hits each from my BB's 36cm's before sinking at Port Moresby. Luckily they could rearm at Rabaul.. I was really astounded how they could take more than one..

An 18.1" hole extending from top to bottom or side to side of a merchie is not a fatal hit. The fuzes on those big rounds probably didn't even "know" that they passed through multiple layers of 3/8" mild steel.

Lokasenna -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/6/2013 1:05:08 AM)

I can't tell you how many times I've had Yamato fire at a ship, only to hit the superstructure... I want to see ship's side penetrated, damn it!

Despite being a big shell, if they blow up somewhere that doesn't cause flooding or fires, one hit on anything bigger than a patrol craft isn't going to sink it. Unfortunately... Those 18" shells are so hard to come by.

spence -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/6/2013 1:35:29 AM)

Against a PT or a merchie those big shells won't explode at all. The armor piercing delayed action fuze needs something like armor to activate it. PTs are plywood. USS Gambier Bay was sunk by cruisers' fire. Even though the Yamato got in a few licks the shells just went right on through without exploding.

In general I have had little success with PTs. But in one PBEM I had PT32 and a pair of friends fight and survive 4 fights with IJN destroyers in which 3 of the latter became artificial reefs. The other PTs were sunk but PT32 scored on 2 of those DDs and ultimately escaped the PI to Darwin.

But on balance it takes quite a few multiples of 5 tons of plywood and 15 men or so to match up to 2000 tons of steel and 300 men (a DD). How many PTs does it take to pay for a Yamato? The victory point totals really don't tell the story very well.

DOCUP -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/6/2013 2:33:40 AM)

I sunk a ship with my PTs.[X(][X(][X(].

dr.hal -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/6/2013 12:24:38 PM)

During the early months I had a group of PTs stop an invasion as my opponent didn't have a strong escort. The moon was right (which appears to be essential for a successful attack) and I had changed out the lead ship's skipper to highly aggressive and high naval value. Part of the group was the British boats from Hong Kong! It was a beautiful thing to see! Surprised the you know what out of my opponent. As I recall a number of Merchants sunk with a WHOLE lot of troops swimming for it.

Paul I wasn't going to point out WHO I was playing!

pws1225 -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/6/2013 8:01:00 PM)

No problem there, Hal. That little experience taught me to run some DDs in first to chase the little buggars away. But I still hate PT boats.

topeverest -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/8/2013 3:10:44 AM)

IME, PT's are best used in restricted water in low light moon turns using very aggressive commanders. They can devastate empire through the 'no radar' period. Lots of nasty tricks with PT's once you learn at sea refueling do's and don'ts. The biggest problem is the limited supply of them in 42.

bigred -> RE: 6 PT boats for a CVL (8/9/2013 4:30:56 AM)

Off Rangoon in late 43 in Game w/ FatR pt309 put a torp into Musashi. IIRC FatR said it would take 300 days to repair. He was running Yamato and Musashi in same TF. Ship was along way from major port and FatR implied the ship may not be repaired before the end of the war.
