Conde Nast Traveler has named the friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world. Friendliest cities: 1. Florianopolis, Brazil 2. Hobart, Tasmania 3. Thimpu, Bhutan 4. Queenstown, New Zealand 5. Charleston, South Carolina 6. Paro, Bhutan 6 (tie). Margaret River, Australia 8. Mandalay, Burma 9. Kilkenny, Ireland 9 (tie). Ubud, Bali 10. Chiang Mai, Thailand Unfriendliest cities: 1. Newark, New Jersey 2. Islamabad, Pakistan 3. Oakland, California 4. Luanda, Angola 5. Kuwait City, Kuwait 6. Lome, Togo 7. New Haven, Connecticut 8. Detroit, Michigan 9. Atlantic City, New Jersey 10. Tangier, Morocco Woot! My city is #2 in the friendly list and we made their top ten of the best places to visit [8D] Somehow we've been beaten by some Brazilian hell-hole where you'll almost certainly be robbed or shot...or both. US centric. I note Falluja isn't on the list[;)] I still remember some of those places in the back end of Russia and China too, when I did the Peking to Paris run. Newark must be a hell of a place. What does it have that beats Islamists on the attack, Drunken Siberians with death stares and kalashnikovs and PRC 'officials' ready to shoot you if you so much as step off the planned route?

I've talked to a number of my colleagues who have witnessed the descent into near anarchy that is Venezuela, some barrios in and around Sao Paulo and have travelled recently in Nicaragua and Guatemala-both rife with drug gangs, street thugs and corruption. Get real. And that's just the Western hemisphere. Nothing in CONUS compares. To have 5 of the top 10 "least friendly" as American cities is laughable. Oh, by the way, where's Minneapolis on the 'most friendly' list? Several respected American periodicals recognize this city as an excellent one for visitors and residents alike.

Uttoxeter, England gets my vote for friendliest city in the world. The fact that warspite1 is mayor there helps.

I read a comment from a resident of Florian�polis who was incredulous about their number one rating as he said the airport is a joke, untreated sewage pollutes their otherwise lovely beaches and it runs out of water in Summer. Anyway, up the river from the photo in my original post, an eccentric Tasmanian gambling millionaire has built an amazing and crazy art museum called MONA. It looks like a Bond villain's lair, heaps of it is hewn from the bedrock and some of the stuff in there is pretty "out there" but it's great. Best time to visit us in in the Northern Winter. Because we're surrounded by ocean it doesn't really warm up here until nearly Christmas but then Summer drifts on into April. That is what remains of the old Packard Motor plant. Once part of the great Arsenal of Democracy. Now a tourist destination for brave urban explorers.
