Neilster -> Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/6/2013 9:57:47 AM)

Conde Nast Traveler has named the friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world.

Friendliest cities:

1. Florianopolis, Brazil
2. Hobart, Tasmania
3. Thimpu, Bhutan
4. Queenstown, New Zealand
5. Charleston, South Carolina
6. Paro, Bhutan
6 (tie). Margaret River, Australia
8. Mandalay, Burma
9. Kilkenny, Ireland
9 (tie). Ubud, Bali
10. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Unfriendliest cities:

1. Newark, New Jersey
2. Islamabad, Pakistan
3. Oakland, California
4. Luanda, Angola
5. Kuwait City, Kuwait
6. Lome, Togo
7. New Haven, Connecticut
8. Detroit, Michigan
9. Atlantic City, New Jersey
10. Tangier, Morocco

Woot! My city is #2 in the friendly list and we made their top ten of the best places to visit [8D]

Somehow we've been beaten by some Brazilian hell-hole where you'll almost certainly be robbed or shot...or both. I smell corruption [:'(]

Anyway, anyone live in Newark? [:D]

Cheers, Neilster

Here's Hobart, Tasmania. You can almost see me. I live just to the left [:'(]

Let's hear it for us Americans! one town in the friendliest, but 5 in the unfriendly category.[&o] I hope you tourists take the hint.[:D]

Max 86 -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/6/2013 2:09:17 PM)

Everyone knows New Jersey is worst than Islamabad. Always has been! [:D]

SapperAstro_MatrixForum -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/6/2013 2:40:55 PM)

US centric. I note Falluja isn't on the list[;)]

I still remember some of those places in the back end of Russia and China too, when I did the Peking to Paris run.

Newark must be a hell of a place. What does it have that beats Islamists on the attack, Drunken Siberians with death stares and kalashnikovs and PRC 'officials' ready to shoot you if you so much as step off the planned route?

It takes a periodical publication with a distorted sense of reality is what.

I've talked to a number of my colleagues who have witnessed the descent into near anarchy that is Venezuela, some barrios in and around Sao Paulo and have travelled recently in Nicaragua and Guatemala-both rife with drug gangs, street thugs and corruption. Get real. And that's just the Western hemisphere. Nothing in CONUS compares.

To have 5 of the top 10 "least friendly" as American cities is laughable.

Oh, by the way, where's Minneapolis on the 'most friendly' list? Several respected American periodicals recognize this city as an excellent one for visitors and residents alike.

Was that the one that was on the ABC with the cars from 1908?

The trouble with Newark, is that it's full of New Jersyans.

Thats the one, though I wasn't in that one, but one of the follow ups afterwards. They do it most years, along with a few different routes now and again.

A lot of fun let me tell you, and worth the effort.

After reading about that hell hole on wiki I almost want to take a vacation to that place.

What happened to North Korea? Pyongyang is very unfriendly, I hear.

I suspect that this list reflects what the tourists think about different places they have visited. Not much tourism in North Korea therefore they do not get any votes.

Most unfair! It's like the Academy Awards!

I checked out Hobart on the net. Looks like a nice place.

Uttoxeter, England gets my vote for friendliest city in the world. The fact that warspite1 is mayor there helps.

Zap -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/9/2013 12:56:46 AM)

Obviously, uniformed results. We all know my town Las Vegas is the friendliest city. Just bring your wallet or we won't let you in.

As a former resident of NJ, I resemble that remark.

Neilster -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/9/2013 4:53:30 AM)

I read a comment from a resident of Florianópolis who was incredulous about their number one rating as he said the airport is a joke, untreated sewage pollutes their otherwise lovely beaches and it runs out of water in Summer.

Anyway, up the river from the photo in my original post, an eccentric Tasmanian gambling millionaire has built an amazing and crazy art museum called MONA. It looks like a Bond villain's lair, heaps of it is hewn from the bedrock and some of the stuff in there is pretty "out there" but it's great.

Best time to visit us in in the Northern Winter. Because we're surrounded by ocean it doesn't really warm up here until nearly Christmas but then Summer drifts on into April.

Cheers, Neilster

Detroit could not even make #1 on this list.

Neilster -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/9/2013 4:14:47 PM)

I believe it was described as "the armpit of the World" :/

That's a seriously authentic post-apocalypse movie set though. A Stalingrad movie perhaps?

Cheers, Neilster

jimi3 -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/9/2013 4:52:08 PM)

That is what remains of the old Packard Motor plant. Once part of the great Arsenal of Democracy. Now a tourist destination for brave urban explorers.

Chickenboy -> RE: Friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world (8/9/2013 5:02:00 PM)

What a delightful candidate for urban renewal, if I ever saw one.

Thank-you parusski. As mayor of Uttoxeter I am proud of my city. I say Welcome to all* and free drinks all night for all first time visitors.

*Naturally the Dutch are not included in this general feeling of bonhomie. Crazy Dutch B^^&&** can stay the %^&* off my land [:@]

You should be proud. If for no other reasons than Uttoxeter being a "NO DUTCH" zone, as well as your recent banishment of MARJORIE.
