coreyjones -> Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 10:40:38 PM)

So i am playing as the allies for the first time in my current pbem and i have managed to get all my U.S carriers sunk in april of 42 off tarawa. Granted I sunk three of the jap heavies, but how screwed am I? I dont start getting any carrier air power until mid 43 it seems like... do I have a long hard year ahead of me?

gregplatt52 -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 11:07:33 PM)

Ouch. How did you loose them? Did your opponent trick you into a trap? At least you sent 3 Japanese carriers and their pilots and planes down to Davey Jones Locker to drink saki for all eternity.
It will be a long year, but the good thing is that your opponent will probably be cautious with the rest of his KB.

Nemo121 -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 11:11:06 PM)

Oh you can carry on. You'll just have to use Burma and Australia and just make shorter hops.

coreyjones -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 11:16:21 PM)

I was actually trying to trap him. He had just finished a raid through new caledonia and i was trying to pounce on him from the north hoping he would be out of sorties and torps. He just happened to get the better rolls. I sank three and damaged two others pretty good leaving him with one untouched.

Nemo121 -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 11:29:32 PM)

Well you're doing well. I took over a game in which all the IJN carriers were untouched and the US was down to just two damaged CVs. You are in far better shape than that. You've destroyed half of KB already.

This game isn't all about carriers. You can do a LOT of harm with short 5 to 6 hex amphibious invasions covered by LBA. Sure it'll be slower and less sexy than a 40 hex jump forward BUT it'll work and it'll let you learn how to co-ordinate things. Plus, learning how to have surface combat assets survive in the face of roaming enemy CVs is an important skill to learn.

coreyjones -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/9/2013 11:36:35 PM)

Thank you for the support guys. Hopefully my landing on Tarawa wont be in vain.

Terminus -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 12:05:24 AM)

Keep at it. At least you're not playing my game. I'm at the end of 4/42 and down 23000 points to 6500...

topeverest -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 1:39:02 AM)

23K to 6.5K

We must be playing the same guy! 55K - 35K against in Aug 43 in a custom stronger empire mod.

bradfordkay -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 1:43:47 AM)

Good lord Termie, who are you playing??!! The rest of us mortals need to know...

Terminus -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 1:59:31 AM)

Fabertong, the Japanese Emperor Penguin. About two weeks ago in game time, he landed on Ceylon. I sent the entire Eastern Fleet (minus the carriers who were in Australia) against the landing site, and EVERY LAST SHIP was sunk. The coast off Koggala is so full of battleship wrecks, it's not even funny. All 4 R-class ships as well as the Warspite. Gone in one night.

bradfordkay -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 2:16:26 AM)

Now that is a serious setback... I am gathering by the score that Ceylon is fully in his hands now?

Terminus -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 2:50:12 AM)

No. He's got Koggala, but am only just getting through with Colombo. The rest of the bases are still mine.

geofflambert -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 4:04:37 AM)

Well, Achilles had his Myrmidons (ant-men) but you have your termite-men to defend Ceylon. Right? You do have termite-men don't you?

Canoerebel -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 4:26:10 AM)

As others are saying, you're in relatively good shape. Many of us Allied players have gone through times when we got all our American carriers sunk with no scores against the enemy - well, perhaps we get lucky and sink Shoho, but that's it. Oh, that's not fun, but as Nemo pointed out, it forces you to think through the problem and come up with effective ways to prosecute the war. And there will be effective ways. Eventually, you'll even come to find the exercise interesting and rewarding.

So you, claiming three enemy carriers, have actually done pretty well! No need to hang your head, mate.

One thing to avoid: as each new CVE rolls out, avoid the temptation to feed them into risky battle, thus continually losing your seed corn. Try to be careful so that you actually do have a new crop ready in early or mid '43. That's not saying not to use them; rather, to be very, very judicicious. Frittering away seed corn is bad mojo.

Good luck!

crsutton -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 6:08:50 AM)

Well, you are about to learn a valuable lesson. It is better to have carriers than not. It will be a tough year but his losses will soften the KB death star. The Allies if they do not panic can still easily win the game in 44 and 45. As said above, just be a little more deliberate and don't fritter away your carriers until you get enough to put up a fight. The issue is not if he won the carrier battle but if he is good enough to exploit it. You will need to think of a way to prevent that.

JocMeister -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 6:34:51 AM)

Its perfectly doable. Harder though! [:)] I lost all CVs and first batch of CVEs for only 3 Jap fleet carriers. I still landed on Mindanao before the historical schedule. [:)]

Here is the AAR if you are interested! I chose the New Guinea route and it worked well without CVs up to the Moluccas!

Dude, SHUT UP! We don't talk about them.

PaxMondo -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 1:15:23 PM)

Just remember, you get replacements, the IJ essentially does not. Especially Akagi/Kaga.

AU Tiger_MatrixForum -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 6:37:29 PM)

Like the others have said, you are doing fine. This is War in the Pacific, not Carriers in the Pacific.

In my game I have been aggressive with my carriers, and fully anticipate the likelihood of being in your shoes at some point. It is late December and I have lost the Enterprise and have a gaping hole in the Saratoga, all without even scratching the paint of a Japanese CV.

coreyjones -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 6:55:14 PM)

Thank you so much guys for the support. I have a plan on how to deal with this : ] hopefully i can wear him away with the p-38's i have on Tarawa now and just hop around from there. The CVE's will be used to protect transport convoys

Canoerebel -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 7:31:06 PM)

You'll probably come up with better ways to use your CVEs.

Canoerebel -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 8:52:45 PM)

That was kind of a vague statement, so let me clarify. Using CVE for convoy escort duty is rather extravagant. CVEs are vital, especially when you've lost many of your fleet carreirs. Routine convoy duty is, well, routine. You don't need to risk high value assets to protect xAKs and the like. A better use of your CVEs would be to gather them together, keep them hidden, and then spring them on your opponent in an offensive maneuver at a proptious moment.

Yeh, but you qualify for a "We Hate IJN CAs!" T-shirt. Canoerebel has the inventory.

Terminus -> RE: Losing all your carriers.. (8/10/2013 10:50:19 PM)

I lost my first CV on 18 december 1941, by I-Boat. Then one more, also by I-Boat in april of the following year. It's a stupendous feeling.
