Sam-I-am -> Now this is getting downright irritating!!! (1/13/2003 11:50:13 AM)

When I go to make a convoy for troop transport the AI grabs every ship in the port and loads troops on them.
DMS,AK,CS,APC and a few others.
I then have to wait another turn for the not wanted ships to unload.
There has gotta be a way to turn this git all ships off.
Right?

Not trying to be picky, I love this game.

Suggestions?

I dont want to make unwanted convoys of the unwanted ships because even just making a convoy they get damage.

Lil help?

Veldor -> Turn Auto Ship Selection Off (1/13/2003 12:08:39 PM)

Turn Automatic-Ship Selection off and add the ships you want to the TF manually. The toggle is at the top of the window after you "create a new TF".

Also, you select a ship by selcting the ship's name from the left hand column. If you cklick on the right hand column, (the name of the port) it will take every ship at that port. I have had this game 6 months and continue to make that mistake.

But I don't do any of those.

Automatic is off and I do select each ship from the left side.

I remember reading in the manuel that the game will add more ships in the convoy when there is not enough ships in the convoy for the whole unit being loaded.

My tactic is to load a lil of the unit at a time to be transported.

More lil convoys mean more targets for the enemy to attack and not all of them get attacked, It really works.

The game thinks I want to load the whole unit in one convoy so it will select all ships in the port.

I find this to be a hassel.

Thanks anyway guys.

Well I agree the interface SHOULD let you do it, even though Im thinking historically it was rarely done (I think a game should let you make the decisions, even if they are not right.. who is to say what truly is right or wrong and how else are new strategies born than to have full freedom of decision?). Im am wondering though if your playing PBEM or against the AI, as from my experience (as well as the general opinion on several related threads here) is your tactic is a sure way to line the ocean bottom with AP's and the like.. Sure more TF's mean more targets, but they are also guaranteed kills then... vs one large escorted TF, where even with out the escorts the combined AA is more and so on... I suppose the only real reason to split them up into smaller TF's would be when your aware of enemy bombardment activity and don't want to get all your ships stuck in port when the enemy bombardment TF arrives. But on the otherhand sometimes in chess its the opponent that doesnt play by all the typical strategies that is a truly challenging (and surprising) opponent... Im all for that...

There is another solution.

Say a ground unit has 3,000 troops.

You could choose 3 ships that can hold 1,000 troops each.

Once the TF sets sail you can split the TF into 3 separate ships.

dherche -> Try this (1/13/2003 9:10:41 PM)

Create a Fast Transport TF of a few APD's and/or DD's. Then select "load troops." The Fast Trans TF will only load what it can hold/unload. This works great when you only need a small raider unit to capture a "dot" on the map.

I think Sam-I-Am may be right that there's a bug in the load-troops routine. The program automatically adds enough transports for all your troops, but sometimes it seems to go overboard. It hasn't been a big problem for me, but I think others have posted about it.

With the AI or a human player I think it would still work.
Sence we cannot choose the convoy to attack this is an advantge I exploit.

Cannot split up the air groups to attack.

Also if a small bit of the ground unit is lost then it will come back as renforcment at a later date.
You will not lose the whole unit.
The air unit attacking also gets fatigued with each attack.
Each attack has less planes than before.
If you time it right then there is no air units to attack.
Works great for me. I have been using this tactic for quite some time in shore landings.

Oh, I do bring along the big boys for fleet ingagements. post them off shore on potrol donot retire/attack.
I use the carriers cap on longrange to cover the landing and this also cuts many of the attacking air units.

I feel that if the AI has a weakness that I can exploit all the same as if it was a real adversary.
Show no mercy:D
