mSterian -> Resources bug/design flaw (8/18/2013 12:49:06 AM)

So... my freighter loads up some cargo from a mine, and leaves towards destination.
Freighter mission, transport steel.
Soon after that, but before the freighter could reach destination, the mine where the resources have been picked up from gets destroyed/captured.

Guess what. The freighter, loses the cargo that it picked up from that destroyed/captured mine. Cargo is now empty. Changing mission to something else (no longer transporting steel).

So.. my opinion is, even if resource storage mechanincs does not support having resources solely on a ship, then at least change the resource location to the destination rather than the original location.
This way, I don't lose cargo just because the location it was picked up from gets destroyed.

Am I making any sense?

Also, please don't forget about the more important bug I reported earlier about pirate attack missions.

Sounds like a bug to me.

I've had such a discussion before on a different matter. Last time, I was calling something a bug, while someone was calling it a design flaw. This time, I'll be on the other end :)
In this case, it seems like a design flaw due to the fact that they didn't use a variable to store cargo on ships, just on bases.
There IS a variable that stores the transported cargo, but the variable of the LOCATION of the transported cargo points to the original location of the cargo.
Thus, when itis destroyed, all the cargo of that base/station, including the one being transported FROM it, disappears.

its similar with characters moving from one location to another.
i had a scientist moving from one research base to another and i scrapped the first one.
my best scientist died. i even got the message that he was on board the base when it was destroyed.
WHAT!
i thought that bugs was fixed and her wasn't even on the base.
scrapping a base should not effect characters who are in transit and when a base is scrapped have the characters just auto-move to the home-world.

Well, "transit" here is in fact only a delay until the cargo/character reaches destination.
Until it's marked as "reached destination", it's actually still in the original location. Both cargo and character it seems.
In case of characters, this can be a balance thing, so you don't imediatly escape with all characters when the base gets attacked.
But in the case of cargo it's not good. I can't control freighters anyway.

Thanks for that report. This is fixed in the next update.
