Sid Meier's Gettysburg works on my Windows 8 laptop. Just install from the disk, not auto run.

Re SMG

Yes, I got a spare copy at a car boot sale - couldn't believe my luck.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/20/2013 1:23:40 PM)

Erik mentioned above that a new version of CaW will be still coming out - this is interesting as another thread here mentions that SSG is not really functioning anymore since the sad passing Ian Trout a while back - so is this definitely still going to happen?

DSWargamer -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/20/2013 1:42:47 PM)

Yeah I am onboard with agreeing with Wargame Construction set 2: Tanks. The only game I have seen that actually makes me think of Panzer Leader (AH board game) on a computer.

laramieela -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/22/2013 3:42:05 AM)

I discovered in Windows 8 that all of my old dos games play perfectly fine.
So, instead of spending hypothetical $10 for games, I would spend real dollars for a Windows 8 machine, but only if you have all your old games.

altipueri -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/22/2013 8:54:32 AM)

Do they run from c:\ or do you need an installer dosbox thing - that I always found aggro?

Anyway, I shoved the 5.25" disk in the CD-rom tray thing and it made an unseemly racket.

Amazon has lots of them for $10.

baloo7777 -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/23/2013 1:53:59 AM)

There was a game I played on my old WIN95 system called Ghengis Khan. I loved it and would pay to have it again! [:'(]

laramieela -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/24/2013 3:33:40 AM)

They run on desktop as other programs. No installer. You need to tell the computer to run as Dox or XP or whatever was the latest version. Maybe adjust the screen resolution.
But pretty simple and then runs just like in the 'good old days.'

Very funny about the disk. I actually still have my 32 bit computer which required a tape drive.

I was intrigued and had to give it a go.

And I remembered why I haven't been playing the game yet again after I tried.

The thing a lot of people often forget, is thatin today's computer reality, a lot of our rigs are running a 64 bit environment, and as such, the OS is no longer relevant.

In my case, I was informed by my Steel Panthers 3 disk, that it simply wasn't going to run on 64 bit. And having Windows 8 meant precisely nothing in this instance.

I am pondering installing a partion as 32 bit some day to resolve this.

SapperAstro_MatrixForum -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/26/2013 4:44:54 PM)

Hence why I said "Packaged up in an installer" since that is how Good old Games do it. I can get most dosgames working fine in dosbox, but then because the music, etc, was only present on the cd, a straight dosbox start won't allow those extra bells and whistles.

As for windows 1.x/2.x/3.x/95/98 etc...those are the games that can be dogs to get working in new operating systems, with or without the music/videos/etc.

I am actually having more luck making the early windows games work in Linux than windows. Still have the CD bells and whistles missing issues of course.

ezzler -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/27/2013 10:54:28 PM)

Games i have from Gog and elsewhere that still get played

grandest fleet
imperialism
moo 1 2
colonisation
civ 3
renegade legion
baris
xcom 1 2 + apocalypse

Ones that dont work as well - poor graphic/ unfriendly UI etc
the spy one - microprose secret agent
warlords
darklands
battle isle
thunderscape
Pharaoh
Gangsters {which is great game - but crashes and causes blue screen}
tie fighter
castles 1+2
robin hood
jagged alliance

Would love remake of
war game construction set 2.
Age of rifles, sure.
carrier strike
Battle of britain
starfleet battles 123

Ezz fwiw BOB2 is still being supported by the developers and it's also being sold by Matrix (only in NA). BoB2 just had a new patch come out earlier this year despite being 8 years old or w/e it is now.

Lecivius -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/28/2013 4:08:00 PM)

imperialism
moo 1 2

I would love to get this working. Do you need Win8, ore something else to get these to run on a 64 bit machine?

catwhoorg -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/28/2013 4:31:59 PM)

Even though I have the disks.

I repurchased through gog.com.

They have tweaked the programs to be more compatible with the modern OS.

(Moo1+2 combined is $6. Imperialism is a further $6)

Very interesting.

Off to the Internet!!

histgamer -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/28/2013 6:29:43 PM)

Right, GOG doesn't just release old games, they also test and work on them to make them more compatible for newer OS's. I'm surprised this wasn't more widely known.

catwhoorg -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/28/2013 6:35:08 PM)

Theres even a few bug fixes thrown in for some of them.

Lecivius -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/28/2013 8:22:03 PM)

Man, I looked through their site. This is gonna be fun...and slightly expensive [:D]

In the case of a 64 bit problem there usually is no fix. The only solution is generally give the game a 32 bit environment. This usually means a partition set up that way.

That's why I just repurchase games from GOG.com instead of trying to get the retail boxed versions up and running on my 64-bit Windows 7 PC. Imperialism I & II and Master of Orion I & II run fine on my machine and all I had to do after purchasing them was download and install them.

Wait until they are on sale and get them for 50% to 75% off!

SapperAstro_MatrixForum -> RE: What old wargames would you pay $10 for? (8/29/2013 4:05:17 PM)

Ah, if only the owners of the games in this thread would do the same eh? Even see if Good old Games will package and host them to sell. The owners make a commission off them too.
