Is there an War in the Pacific equivalent for Space faring games ?

Looking at the feature list of WITP I would say Distant Worlds, the other 4X space games on current release are nowhere near as in depth as the current iteration of DW, not being biased just being honest as I have tried the others, some have better graphics but all of them lack the depth of play that DW offers.

It's not out yet, but Galaxial looks promising.

If you want to play new faring games then you can select the flash game

Don't hesitate to post questions. Sussing out DW mechanics can require an absurd amount of reading and experimentation. It's much quicker just to ask and hope someone who's already done the reading will chime in.

Jeeves' Quick Start Guide is probably worth reading when you're getting started. It's somewhat dated and not revised for Shadows, but it presents a good overview of mechanics to get you started.

Nedrear's One Thread to Guide Them All is also worth bookmarking. I don't think he's actively maintaining it, but the core mechanics (pirate economics aside) haven't changed all that much, so I'd say 90% of it is still applicable.

Yes. It's called Aurora. :-) though it is nowhere as polished as DW, it will make your head spin.

You will also need to hope that the thing runs, I am no slouch when setting things up but the only way I could get it to run was on an old win98 machine, the install process really needs to be updated, feel like I am back on Linux trying to get it to work, if you can get past that hurdle the game is the Dwarf Fortress of 4x games with a learning curve like mount Everest to match, really good if you have the time and can get past the graphics, which is the same for Dwarf Fortress, I often wonder if it is the law of the universe that only the best games have the worst graphics [8|]

Definitely agree that DW is the most in depth 4X out there atm.

And as far as the comparison to WiTP, here are my thoughts:

In all honestly, WiTP has a less sophisticated economic model than does DW. In WiTP, you can really only control a few aspects of the Japanese economy and none of the Allied econom. And even the with Japanese economy, you are not controlling actual ship building, only the speed at which you get historical ships. And though you can control production numbers of aircraft, you can not design new ships or aircraft. DW may not give you control over the civilian economy, but it is far, far more in depth in how it works. WiTP has only 2 resources...resources and oil, and while you have to get them to where they need to be to keep the economy going, I've found that in WiTP:AE you almost have to control it yourself, the AI can not be trusted to do it. DW's AI manages to keep the economy going without breaking...that is pretty impressive given the number of resources available and having to get the right resource to the right place.
