DEF_BUNGIS -> Looking for a little tech support (4/22/2000 10:55:00 AM)

I was wondering if any veteran SPIII players could direct me to a good SPIII forum, where I could ask some tech support questions. I got SP III (brigade command) CD today and I can't get the game to play with sound. It recognizes the card, but when I try to play the game with sound, it crashes. The game runs fine without sound. I have tried everything, I even have a SB16 card that is supposedley supported. Thanks. ------------------ Better to make the wrong decision than be the sorry son of a bitch to scared to make one at all.

Try going into the setsound.exe and setting the sound to soundblaster pro or 100% compatible.

Sheit BIG JOE, I'm way past that bro. I haven't had this much problem out of a game since DOS 5.0. I have tried evrything under the sun to get this sound to work. It is getting very frustrating. I even have a SB16 card installed! One of the supported cards on the list! I have edited config.sys auto.exe sys.ini and every other friggin system file on my system to get some sound out of this game. The game runs fine without sound, you know the NO DIGITAL sound selection, but it crashes if I select ANY sound support from SOUND.EXE I'm about ready to give up. Hey, I just thought of something. Is SPIII compatible with directX 7.0? I'm just wondering if this could be direct X problem...? ------------------ Better to make the wrong decision than be the sorry son of a bitch to scared to make one at all. When the dialog box asks you to set sound choose SET Sound Maually. You will be asked to choose your sound card, IRQ addrss and DM# (or whatever the hell the last thing is!). If you know the answers to what and where your sound card is you'll be fine. I suggest that once you config the sound card you write down the three numbers and save them. I still have mine in my sp manual. Hope this non-tec answer will help

I dusted off my old PC and did the install...As I said choose select manuallly... choiose your sound card, your I/O addrss, IRQ, and DMA. You might want to first select No digital sound. Then exit windows to DOS and type in CD\STEEL2\Sound. From there reconfig the sound manually. Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestions Big Joe and Mark. Well, I did all the resource rearranging and still nothing. I have edited every friggin system file on my computer. I have tried every sound configuration with this game. From DOS and Windows. Still nothing. I have narrowed it down, When I run the sound configuration (dos or win98) it recognizes my card, but crashes if I try to play the game with sound enabled. So I start the game with no sound, then enable the MUSIC, the game continues to run, but with no music heard. Then I enable the SOUND EFFECTS, bam...the game crashes. I dunno.....SP III and my system aren't getting along very well, even the patch made my system crash. I think I'm giving up. Anyone interested in trading an older WAR GAME, for my SPIII(Brigade Combat team). If your interested see my E-MAIL under my profile. ------------------ Better to make the wrong decision than be the sorry son of a bitch to scared to make one at all.

Sorry it didn't work out. Funny thing, though. I hadn't played SP in six months or so...since CM demo in Oct.... But because of your set sound question I loaded SP2 on my hard drive. Been playing the Fulda gap 1980 campaign. Talk about a game with longevity! This sure does have it. I've played SP1, SP2, and loaded SP3. The Brigade size thing with it's single icon for tank platoons just didn't interest me. I've actually only used the SP3 CD to play SPWW2 variants. Of course SPW@W will provide the changes I had hoped for when SP3 came out. I hope you don't give up on SP because of the set sound problems. Through the years there have been many post on this...almost always with a solution for those who needed it...like I did. Hopefully someone with better tech skills will read the thread and help you out.

We have some routines we often use to try to rememdy problems, DB. Try deleting your steel.prf file from the save menu, then reinstalling using setsound. Should all this fail, get in touch with Andy Gailey. This guy has never failed to resolve a sound problem for anyone. His E-Mail address is: a.gailey@scotiasoft.demon.co.uk Use this last court of resort before you trade away your game. Wild Bill

Thanks for that contact WB, but I have already shipped the game to Von shrad. He seemed interested in the game so what the heck. I hope he can get it to work on his system. If not, I'm sure he will contact Andy. I am now looking forward to SPW@W now that I won't need the SP CD to play it. Absolutely. Out with the old, in with the new, though an occasional fight in SP3 is still a lot of fun for me. I do agree, however, that between CM and SPWAW I'll be missing a lot of Summer sun this year (G)....WB ------------------ Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games
