Maximeba -> Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 1:00:41 AM)

Currently playing War in the East against an opponent. We are looking for a new game as WITE seems to have run it's course. Is War in the Pacific worth buying.

Thanks,
Wes

yes.

wdolson -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 1:34:54 AM)

WitP AE has tremendous depth. It takes some effort to learn, but once you learn it, the re-playability is probably the highest in Matrix's catalog. You can play the same scenario over and over again and still get something out of each playing. One reason this forum is still so busy years after the release of the game.

My sig line sort of sums it up, for the cost of play per hour, it's the least expensive games out there.

Bill

All I can say is I've been playing this game for 10 years (?) now - between the original remake (WitP) and the AE version. If you added up all the hours I have spent on this game I think Matrix would be paying me to play it by now. Honestly if you can stand the steep learning curve and are willing to put the time into it to learn it, then its one of the best games ever. Most games cost the same amount and you play them roughly 40-60 hours and never again. Play Japan and you will put 40-60 hours just into the first couple turns of the grand campaign :)

geofflambert -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:34:32 AM)

Actually, the price should appear cheap to you. But as with crack cocaine it will lead to a lifetime of misery and dependency. Run away, run away now while you still have a chance!

As Bill says, the fact that the WITP forum is still going strong after all these years (probably one of the strongest on Matrix) should tell you something about the worth of the game. Many people in this forum have been around since Uncommon Valor came out, the precursor to WITP.

Footslogger -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:45:21 AM)

Once you get the game, you'll never know how you lived without it.[;)] This game also has mods you can use. The possiblites are endless.[8D]

GreyJoy -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 8:23:20 AM)

Also WITPAE is, hands down, the best cure against Onanism and sex addiction syndrome... once you play it enough you won't need anything else to answer to your biological stimolus

PaxMondo -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 10:03:46 AM)

And the support is ongoing ... something that is VERY rare in the industry.

JocMeister -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 10:08:24 AM)

I´ve played both games quite extensively. WITE was a very good game but I grew tired of it after 4-6 months. But I have been playing WITP/WITP:AE for 7 years now. That should tell you something! [;)]

Terminus -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 10:36:46 AM)

Yes, it's worth it.

tigercub -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 10:42:05 AM)

YES

dr.hal -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 12:21:49 PM)

If you put it in terms of hours of entertainment, you spend about the same money to go to three movies (I think) that MIGHT give you six hours of interesting entertainment, where this game will give you hundreds and more. The math is simple; get the game and give a movie a miss.

Terminus -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 1:07:33 PM)

I must have clocked THOUSANDS of hours on this game, and I'm not a heavy player. The hours-to-price ratio is nuts.

LoBaron -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 1:12:35 PM)

By all means, yes.

Shoot, to get everything done for the first turn for Japan you might spend 40-60 hours on. And, although the turns go quicker, 15 min for one in July of 1945 for Japan, the game is more of an experience to go through than a game.

catwhoorg -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:35:17 PM)

I played one scenario (Guadacanal), then launched into me first campaign versus the AI, which is in 1943.

Already its been a good return on the cost, and I see many more years of playing ahead of me.

Lomri -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:37:51 PM)

Hands down the best game purchase I've ever made. I think back to the day I picked up the box of Uncommon Valor (precursor to this game) at the store and thought "this might be fun" and wonder how empty my life would have been had I grabbed something else.

leehunt27@bloomberg.net -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:37:58 PM)

its definitely worth the cost-- I've been playing for years, still learning things, still challenging- and always exciting to get the combat replay turn in the mail when you know your carriers are about to clash....

leehunt27@bloomberg.net -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 2:47:41 PM)

I might add that what makes War in the Pacific extra special - is that every PBEM game really is different. I played Grigsby's War in the East and War in Russia as well, and they are fantastic games, but they do run their course. War in the Pacific has such limitless strategies and opportunity to rewrite history. If you look at some AAR's you can see Allied forces invading through the DEI, or the Kuriles, or Japanese forces conquering India or Sydney Australia. What if the Japanese win the first few carrier battles? What if the Allies hold on to the Philippines? Rarely in an Eastern Front game, though they are fun in their own right too, such great variety.

Treetop64 -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 3:17:32 PM)

I've played countless games of all kinds since before the days of the Amiga 500 and MicroProse, and WitP easily ranks among the upper end of the top five on the all-time list. Seriously. Knowing what I know now about the game, even if it costs twice as much I would still snap it up. Compensation for just the amount of research that went into this game is itself worth more than that. Good news is that it is still actively and robustly supported.

It's an immensely rewarding game, just give the required investment of time to come to grips with it initially.

9 out of 10 dentist's recommend WitP-AE.[;)]

+1 I've felt tremendous withdrawals for a couple of weeks now because of my PBEM-opponents alleged computer problems :D..

Sieppo -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 3:49:02 PM)

It's worth it if you are a person that likes to learn new things, plan, micromanage and feel big emotions due to a computer game. I don't think there is a rival to that.

Sardaukar -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 3:56:13 PM)

Of course it depends how much one values his/her family, other human relations (other than via this forum), sleep, healthy food etc... [:D]

When you start to play WitP-AE, "one more turn" symptom is very strong.[8D]

And the 10th denounces it for all the teeth-grinding it causes.

Dili -> RE: Is this game worth the price (9/13/2013 5:10:12 PM)

It is the game that is nearer the Graal of air, sea land operations at same level of detail. The land is not so good like the others but it seems the only game that attempted to give the same importance to the three services.

So expect to deal from submarines to engineers,to night fighters, ASW patrols, carrier operations, night torpedo fight, midget submarine operations, parachutists, logistics and if you play as Japan resource/oil transport for japanese industry. Oh i forgot you still have pilots quality to manage...and don't get too attached to your aces. And you have geography, port size limits what you can supply your ships with, so bring tenders AS, AD, AGP, AKE, naval support. Yamato and other battleships for example can only resupply its main guns in biggest ports. Do you split your carriers in task forces or pack them in one task force? do they operate with cruisers or give it also a slow battleship? do you maximize your CAP to protect the carrier of maximize the escort to protect your dive bombers and torpedo bombers? Weather? Moon phases?
