Germany and Japan rebase a crappy bomber closer to the front.

No reorganization.

The impulse did not end so now the Allies ponder on whether they should pass or not.

No declarations of war.

CW, France and China selects land. Without passing there is 50% chance that the turn will end. China felt that they had advantage by moving some units and so did CW.

No Port Strikes. No naval air. No naval movement. No strategic bombing. No ground strikes.

France rails the 42nd Corps from Oran to Tunis.

China reorganize their lines and are not happy with how things look.

Wavell (HQA) debarks into Bayonne. CW also debarks the 4th Corps into Calais.

No land combats.

CW rebase a NAV2 (Swordfish) to Derry.

No reorganization.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/17/2014 7:47:18 PM)

Turn ends on a 5 or less but I rolled a 10 so the turn continues and Axis gets another, unexpected, impulse..

New weather is a 5 (4+1) which means storm and rain.

No declarations of war. Germany was eager to declare war on Belgium since getting a double move is now a likely possibility and if that happened then Belgium would have been overrun without Allied interference. But the high US entry chits during '39 made me delay with this DOW. But somehow I feel doubtful that this was the right call. [sm=sad-1361.gif]

Japan selects land while Germany and Italy go with combined.

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

Germany rebase the fleet in Memel to Kiel.

Italy sends two TRS to the West Mediterranean loaded with HQA and one MOT. The transporters are escorted by one battleship and four cruisers.

Edit: Note that the Italian fleet can not reach higher than the one box. [:(]

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 6:51:54 AM)

Italy elects to not search for the enemy. France, however, do search in the hope of gaining a bunch of surprise points so that a TRS can be targeted. Getting so many surprise points is unlikely but you can never win if you do not play.

Italy reacts and sends out a NAV2 to escort the fleet.

Both sides roll low and find and there are no surprise points at all. Italy decide to make it a naval air combat. This inflicts two abort result on the French ships but France rolls well on the defence so the result of the combat is no effect. Both sides stay for another round of combat but both search roll fail this time... much ado about nothing.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 8:08:44 AM)

Italy bombs Marseilles strategically meanwhile Germany bombs Metz. France sends a FTR2 to Metz and Germany counter intercepts with a FTR2 and a air combat commences. The result of the air combat is that the French fighter aborts but they had succeeded in removing the +1 on the die roll and are fairly happy with the result. A two is rolled in both raids so strategic bombing now falls in the category "why bother" for the Axis.

No ground strikes.

Germany rail the Kiel militia to Karlsruhe.

Japan moves their forces in the south to attack the Peking militia. They also move to capture a unguarded resource.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 6:32:22 PM)

Italy debarks two land units into Tunisia.

Japan attacks the Peking militia.

Germany is out of patience and attacks Rotterdam despite lousy weather and even lousier combat odds. But now, at least, Germany has two "loss units" in the attack. Maybe I should not do this attack because I asked myself if I felt lucky and my answer was that I didn't feel lucky at all. I rather feel that I must attack.

von Bock attempts to provide offensive HQ support.

The Royal Navy provides 11 points in defensive shore bombardment.

Germany fly all available aircraft in support of the attack and so does CW.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 7:23:34 PM)

The air combat over Rotterdam is extremely bloody and almost all bombers gets cleared through after all fighters are destroyed. Note that CW had the option to destroy their air transport instead of a fighter but I decided it was more important to keep the ATR.

The real winner here is France since Luftwaffe is severely decimated by fighting RAF.

HQ support fail.

The attack ends in one division destroyed for CW. Much effort for no real gain at all. But it could have been a lot worse.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 9:58:09 PM)

The Japanese attack was a success although I would have preferred if the attacking units had not been disorganized since it cost oil to reorganize Yamamoto.

Edit: The Peking militia will now be removed from the force pool and will not be available to be built until Peking, the city, is once again controlled by China.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/18/2014 10:18:14 PM)

No reorganization.

Turn ends on a 7. Since Axis both begun and ended this turn the Initiative Track moves one step toward the Allied side

No Partisans.

Germany gets two neutrality markers and place one (4) as offensive and the other (1) as defensive. USSR gets one (4) and place it as offensive

USA draws one entry marker (3) and place it against Japan. US selects to send resources to China and one marker (4) is moved to the tension pool. US then selects to send resources to western Allies and no marker is moved and US decides to not pick a second US entry option this turn.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/20/2014 7:47:26 AM)

Here is a picture showing the units destroyed in Nov/Dec '39.

A surprisingly long turn that begun with fine weather but then it quickly turned bad.

Not that many units lost but one can clearly see that Luftwaffe and RAF fought it out and most of their high quality fighters were lost and it will take time to replace them.

Edit: This many nationalist losses is a cause of concern for China. Especially since this was a winter turn when losses were expected to be lower.

Prod plan Prelim:
USA, USSR, China, Italy - no change needed
France - save Iraq oil in Damascus instead in order to save CP use.
CW - Save both NEI oil in Batavia so that no CPs need to be used. Send the previously saved Venezuelan oil for production in UK.
Japan - New orders needed for the NEI oil since NEI now is a active minor instead of a neutral. I send both to Japan for production.
Germany - Sends one oil previously saved to production in order to produce fully. This is needed because of the resources traded to Italy.

All Axis ships, except CPs, return to base.
CW stay at sea with plenty of convoy escorts and almost all CPs. 3 battleships, 2 cruiser, 1 TRS and 1 CP stay in The North sea. French CL in The Baltic sea was destroyed since it had no base supporting it. France stay at sea with some convoy escorts.

France use 1 oil, CW use 3 oil, Germany spend 3 oil, Italy spend 1 oil and 5 cruisers do not get organized. Japan use 2 oil. All countries except Italy organized all their units.

Germany aligns Hungary. US reacts but a 0 marker is drawn.

Japan and Germany selects land while Italy select a naval impulse.

No Port Strikes.

Italy fly a NAV2 to the 4 box in the Western Mediterranean.

Italy send a TRS, escorted by a CL, to Tunisia with one German Corps. They also sail with 2 battleships and two cruisers to the 4 box in the Western Mediterranean. One light cruiser patrol the four box in The Italian Sea.

Indeed. But that is not expected when fighting with RAF.

But at the moment RAF is severely depleted and will remain weak for a while due to unlucky builds.

Germany rails a MTN corps to North Italy.

Japan moves into the Chinese city Nanyang but the news of this never reach the US public.

Axis decide to attack Rotterdam and Changsha.

CW support the Reserve Army in Rotterdam with 4 points of shore bombardment (all that is available).

Luftwaffe send two bombers, escorted by a obsolete fighter, in support of the attack. Since CW can't send any fighters to the combat hex they decide not to send any bombers either.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/23/2014 12:49:21 PM)

The Japanese attack on Changsha is a complete success. The reason for this is that the fractional odds roll made the attack a 5:1 instead of a 4:1. Without the odds shift all the Japanese units would have become disorganized and China would only have lost one unit.

USA ignores the Chinese cries for help when Japan captures Changsha.

Germany feels very lucky at the moment. First the fractional odds attack is successful and then they roll just high enough to capture the hex. Some censored noises can be heard form the CW corner.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/23/2014 4:43:31 PM)

CW picks Naval and France takes a Combined impulse. I think that you can guess what the other nations selected.

No Port Strikes. No naval air

CW sends out a bunch of convoy escorts and some CPs to strengthen the Atlantic route. Home Fleet sail to the North Sea. The Netherlands TRS sail from Australia with a MIL to the South China Sea. The Liner sail to South Africa. Two TRS sail to the North Sea loaded with two Corps.

France send their TRS to the Bay of Biscay loaded with one militia.

No strategic bombing. No ground strikes.

China slowly withdraws but the rainy weather cause many Chinese units to become disorganized if they move into mountains so therefore are there several units that do not move. Two Chinese units are now definitely cut from supply. They could have moved into supply but I feared that Japan would have got overwhelming odds against them in clear or forest terrain. Therefore I leave them in the mountains and hope that they will be some hindrance to Japan. japan, fortunately, has lousy bombers so maybe they can remain organized and put up some resistance. The Chinese situation has me troubled.

CW rebase the two FTR2 one hex closer to Belgium. Now that a new year has begun several of the CVP has decreased in size. Therefore CW rebase a CVP from HMS Furious to HMS Glorious and HMS Furious will, as soon as possible, get a new aircraft component. Unfortunately that may be a while.

Orm -> RE: A World Ignites... (AAR) (2/24/2014 3:30:43 PM)

All Axis nations select a Land impulse.

No Port Strikes. No naval air. No strategic bombing.

Japan ground strikes the Chinese OOS 14th Army with a LND2 but only has a 10% chance of success. At the moment I doubt that it is worth trying with a bomber this bad. It will cost Japan oil and by flying Japan increase the risk for a Chinese partisan to appear since the LND2 was counted in the garrison value.

Germany ground strikes the Belgian Army in Antwerp.

With Italy I save the only oil they receive because it is imperial to have 2 oil available for oil reorganization if you are going to spend one oil for reorganization and still be able to use the generous rounding rules. And that means that Italy may not spend the saved oil for reorganization this turn. Unfortunately, this means that Italy produce 2 build points instead of the 3 they would have produced if they had used the oil for production.

Japan has one idle resource and 4 idle factories and that is not good enough. The CP that I have out should be enough to send all resources, and oil, to production. The main trouble is the oil I receive in trade from NEI. They are transported to the mainland so I send them to factories in Japan instead by using the where to command. After each change I always click on recompute so that I can see what the other changes might be, if any. I also order the Hainan resource to be produced in Canton and now I produce with all available resources.
