Steam has 3 announcements planned for this week. The first was today, a Linux OS that will be optimized for Steam gaming. Also geared toward using your TV as a monitor like a console. Free download like other Linux distros.

Boomer78 -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/24/2013 3:48:17 AM)

Steam OS. So, does that mean they're going to finally separate like an evil Siamese twin away from Windows once and for all? Could we finally then have a rational discussion of what is and isn't DRM? Can we please then divorce ourselves from that parasitical industry leach for once and for all time?

The answer will most surely be no. Salt + wound = fun for the whole family.

Hmm don't see the point, My steam games run just fine off of either my laptop or my desktop using Windows 8 and with a simple hdmi cable use my TV without a single bit of fanfare.

I don't hate Linux, I'm just not into using a geek OS.

SapperAstro_MatrixForum -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/24/2013 2:23:12 PM)

Hmm, what a strange mixup. Unfortunately, all of this news is bad news to my outlook.

I use a windows partition for gaming needs. Nothing else. That partition currently holds winxp.

For everything else a computer can do, I use (insert whatever Linux distro I prefer, usually Ubuntu or Mint depending on the testing). No bugs, no spyware, no bs.

Since I hate the Steam type DRM (this includes anything that requires 'back to base' monitoring) and have no games that require such drm, this os is effectively useless to me. I don't see this going down too well amongst many in the Linux crowd either. Steam is about the most proprietary of proprietary systems when it comes to gaming.

So, in a perfect world (mine at least) there would be native versions of all games for Linux, without a back to base drm system. I won't hold my breath though...[;)]

VPaulus -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/24/2013 2:35:40 PM)

I would rather prefer a Half-life 3 announcement. [;)]

Boomer78 -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/25/2013 9:41:40 AM)

Duke even beat Gordon to the finish line. Sad turn of events for the Black Mesa team. But when your inventor has become a cult-like demigod with aspirations of 'higher office' like Gabe Newell, it's only a matter of time before the entire company pulls a deus ex machina in order to catapult the once humble onto the mighty throne of... whatever golden crown they seek. When this occurs, and with successful companies it almost always does, the thing that got them to their mighty position gets left in the dust.

Will we see a Half-Life 3? Probably. Will it match up in any way to its predecessors? I bet not. Besides, Valve now has Steam, and Steam is currently juggernauting it's way like some kind of flesh eating blob to the top of the gaming industry. If you owned a horse race track, and ran restaurants and mini-casinos as well inside, just how concerned or interested would you be in one single horse? The horse that goes by the name of Gordon.

Call me cynical, but I imagine the release of HL3 will contain at least one of the following terms... rail shooter, 286 DLC packs, Steam achievements (obviously in this case)... and the words that will make me cry, MULTI PLAYER CO-OP CAMPAIGN.

histgamer -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/25/2013 9:48:37 AM)

Boomer I really like the idea of Co-Op Campaigns as long as they are not a substitute for a genuine single player campaign.

As far as the Steam Os is concerned, I just don't see the point. The goal here is to consolize Pc gaming but here's the problem. Consoles are popular because they make gaming simple. No need to build you're own PC, no need to worry about specs or hardware or compatibility. Consoles make gaming easy for people who don't want to fiddle with their rigs.

Steam OS on a PC will require messing with your system while at the same time requiring you to dump a fully functional full PC OS. So this system will ONLY appeal to people who fiddle with their PC's and already know a lot about hardware. Basically Steam OS will have an incredibly small user-base as it only appeals to "hardcore" gamers and wont put any dent in the console crowd because the appeal of Steam of OS is going to be so limited because it will require messing around with things that the ordinary consumer doesn't want to do.

From what I have been hearing, this is actually not going to be the case for the new consoles.

They used to be; turn on, put disk/cartridge in, play game.

They are now morphing into; turn on, make sure internet connection is on, pay subscription fee, buy game, install game, patch game, authorise game install, try playing game. Sounds like a new PC game without any of the PC benefits.

Linux isn't an exclusively geek OS any more since Linux Mint has appeared (if not since Ubuntu). Still, due to them forcing some weird stuff like Pulseaudio on users, ability to google stuff and copy-paste stuff from the terminal is sometimes useful.
But then it's hardly geek stuff. Just basic reading comprehension and ability to copy-paste stuff.
Steam pouring money into its development and optimisation would probably make it as smooth to use as Windows in the areas where it isn't already.
The downside is that it would be Steam OS, though.

Mee too, I won't buy an FPS game without both Co-Op and single player and they both have to be really good.

PVP I don't bother with any more.

Not true at all. Xbox backed off that and PS4 doesn't require online play. You don't NEED an online connection for consoles. Simply pop in disk and play. They do a lot more than consoles of previous generations but they are still far more simple to play. If you want to play online you'll need a subscription for most (not all) games but there is no authorizing, or anything like that.

DSWargamer -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 2:36:41 AM)

I think the only aspect of Steam that concerns me, is the habit of being a resource hog and the updates being a bit of an intrusion.

I'd rather update stuff, or not at all if it is my wish.

I tend to find my PS3 to be a hassle with that as well. If I have not played it in a while the moment I turn it on it steals control and insists on updating.

I recently went the route of connecting the old desktop to the TV, and using it as my media slave instead. I don't play much on the PS3 as a rule. If not for videos, I suppose I wouldn't have gotten it at all.

junk2drive -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 2:59:50 AM)

DSW your media slave is what Steam OS is about. They will give it free to hardware companies to make less expensive boxes. They will also be selling their own branded stuff. The idea is to make a gaming box that is not for geeks only and not locked into Windows or Apple. Of course it will be locked to them instead.

Boomer78 -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 3:19:21 AM)

If the SteamOS/Steam box was a way for them to move their network away from the traditional PC, and they end up leaving traditional PC gaming alone, then I say BON VOYAGE... the sooner the better.

However, that's not how it's going to be. The SteamOS will be just another way for Valve to reach total market saturation and give MS a run for their money in both the PC and console gaming world. And in the end, though I think the box will fail, the SteamOS will continue to take over the PC market, and we'll end up with a completely networked tied front end. The only way to get games at all will be through Valve's Steam store, and the only way ALL PC games will work will be tied into the Steam file/install structure. That's my nightmarish vision for the future of PC gaming. I hope to god I'm wrong.

We know how reliable network dependent companies are. How many times have the PSN, Xbox Live, and other gaming networks been hacked? There comes a time with technological advancements when ability far exceed necessity. I think with Steam we're at that level now.

If that's what happens then fine but the issue here is that the OS as a stand alone build is worthless in the PC market. Pre-built machines will be more useful but the problem will still arise when Steam Boxes become out of date and unable to play new games whereas a PS4 or PS3 will play EVERY SINGLE game designed for that system. Having a lack of uniformity will hurt the Steam Box unless they intend to build 1 or 2 models that will play EVERY game loaded into the catalog.

junk2drive -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 3:47:46 AM)

Here is a link to an article with links to Steam announcements.

http://www.webupd8.org/2013/09/valve-reveals-steamos-linux-based.html

This could be useful to people that have an XP box and don't want to upgrade to Win 7 or 8 next year.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 5:15:33 AM)

I would rather prefer a full refund announcement for all games bought in the US. They are scared of that law if it is ever enacted in the US as anything because it will mean their final result sales will go way down from ripping consumers off with games that don't work and such and a no refund policy.

junk2drive -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 5:25:28 AM)

Thanks for your first post.

Here is another site with details on how to get a free test rig

histgamer -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 5:32:31 AM)

aaatoy many game companies will refund your purchase if the game doesn't work. That's not the same as expecting a refund on a game after you've played the whole thing. The thing holding back what you suggest is what kind of window do you allow? If you wait 2-3 days and play the whole game you have no right to a refund as you've already consumed the product imho. A good example is Android apps where you can get a refund for up to 15 minutes basically ensuring you're able to make sure it works prior to being locked in.

not sure what you mean by this, when was the last time you used Steam - i have never had issues with Steam - its using less resource than Firefox as i type this

you have total control over this - you can turn off updates completely, or just copy the game direcetory to another location so steam doesn't touch it

SteamOS is just a version of Linux, aparantly any SteamOS game will run on any version of Linux, so i think i could just run steam on my Ubuntu box and download whatever SteamOS game i want and run it from there

histgamer -> RE: Steam Lovers, Steam OS announcement (9/26/2013 9:46:08 AM)

I could be wrong here but I just don't think there is a market for this product. Also having multiple devices and multiple manufactures imho is a HUGE mistake for something they are trying to create a standard living room box, and their strategy so far seems poorly thought out. The whole thing is going to be confusing to the average person whose more likely going to go out and buy a Ps4 or Xbox One than they are to try and figure out which graphics card in which steam box is going to be better for them. They are more likely just to go out and buy something they know will play any game they put in it and the PC gamers are not going to abandon their super rigs for this thing, they might buy one anyway but it's not going to replace their PC as their primary gaming solution. I just don't see the market here, not with the strategy they've laid out so far anyway.
