Meroka37 -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 7:23:15 AM)

In a scenario the CMANO PdL Design Team we use a overlay of a map of Georgian roads to make a convoy of ground units follow a certain road between two towns, the scenario is based in Georgian-Russian war of 2.008

I made a quick video on how to add custom overlays to Command.
Only that I am not allowed to post links in the forum yet.

But you will find it on Youtube by searching for:
Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations - How to add custom Overlays

Maybe it's helpful for some of you. Just ignore my german accent and my butchering of the english language. [:)]

SilentHunter -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 4:41:47 PM)

I too have been playing with gmap and the possibility of photo scenery at strike sites or even an entire country is tempting. I'm finding the same as the poster above, creating an entire country is possible by using multiple custom files. As an example the state of Florida can be rendered at zoom level 15 if broken up in to 4 files. 17 zoom if broken up in to 16 files. It seems if the area is too large and the zoom to high it will crash gmap, I'm using the demo version though. I'm curious to know if other also have this issue when using a large area with high zoom 17?

for some reason 17 zoom processed but won't load, it shows up in the custom layer and allows me to add it but the image/map never changes. Also having issues getting anything to work at zoom level 17, the program throws an error 5 out of 6 times.

Thanks for the video (and link). Most useful and following it through whilst making some layers for a scenario I`m working on.

Paul Wykes -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 4:59:53 PM)

First attempt at layer and its does not appear to line up with the coast line. Will this cause a problem? Will the game think the building is actually in the sea ? or it it just a pictorial representation ?

SilentHunter -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 8:15:46 PM)

What are you guys using to convert the images is it demo.windowsforms.exe (gmap)? Seem I can't use zoom level 17 with this software, the highest I've gotten is zoom 15. When using zoom 17 I get error.system.argument:paramert not valid at system.drawing.bitmap.ctor(int32 width, int32 height, pixelformat format)at demo windows forms statucimage.bg_dowork.

Paul Wykes -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 9:12:50 PM)

Thats what I`m using. Are you entering the data in the box highlighted in yellow in the image below ?

In fact, I just tried entering any value and it defaults to 17.

mikmykWS -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 9:17:25 PM)

Paul sometimes you're not going to get a 100% match. This is because the layers are from two different sources. This is the nature of open source imagery. As long as their is terrain under it (has an elevation) you can add the facility.

If something is really off in terms of terrain let us know. We do have somebody that can fill holes[:)]

Yes Entering the number in the same box as you have highlighted. I think it may be the size of the area I'm trying to map, if I only select an airfield I can use zoom of 17, but if I expand that out a bit - say size of a city I get the error mentioned unless I reduce the zoom. I'm not sure but appears there a limit to how big of a region it will convert. As a test I selected the entire united states and can create a worldfile at zoom level 11 but not 12 or higher.

Der Zeitgeist -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 10:43:41 PM)

While the imagery from Bing Maps is working pretty well for me, an annoying problem came up while I'm building a few German airfields. Bing Maps is blurring the images, and the GMap-Application mostly doesnt show the satellite imagery from Google, which is not blurred. It's still possible to get accurate results, because the outlines are still visible with Bing Maps, but I have to double check with Google Earth to find out the exact type of building to put down:

Another funny thing is the different ways old and closed military airfields are used for nowadays. Eggebek Airfield is mostly covered in solar arrays nowadays:

mikmykWS -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 10:59:30 PM)

Its not a fault they are blurring them on purpose. You see this a lot with nuclear weapons facilities. Thats why I like GMAP as you can grab from multiple sources.

Thankfully when I was building most the imports that exist in the game now google worked for the most part and hardly anything was blurred.

I wonder if anyone actually requested the blurring or if Microsoft did it themselves for active military areas.

mikmykWS -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 11:15:09 PM)

Assume somebody asked. Google usually covers in black and to do wonder if the delta in available high res imagery has something to do with it. Thankfully enough sources to mine from.

SilentHunter -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/29/2013 11:30:13 PM)

So is there a size/area limit on what this program will actually convert at zoom level 17? I saw a post about keeping size down to airport or city level, but what's the limitation in going larger, for me it seems to be gmap but I don't know it's something I'm doing wrong or the software.

Jakob Wedman -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/30/2013 1:29:18 PM)

@ Der Zeitgeist
I don't know which airbase you showed that is blurred but Geilenkirchen is blurred in Google Earth and you are still able to look at historical images that is not blurred.

Yes, finding high resolution imagery usually is no problem at all, but the program we use to create these custom overlays has some trouble with pulling data from other imagery providers than Bing Maps, and Bing Maps sometimes blurs military areas.

SilentHunter -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (9/30/2013 4:40:40 PM)

I'm still having issues and wondering if there is a max size allowed either my gmap or command. I'm not able to convert large areas using zoom 17, see post above. Anyway this is a tile set of 3 tiles for the default air training mission. Using photo scenery makes it hard to see the blue colored units. For some reason using fraps though to take pictures left the units off my screenshots and only included the landscape.

Thanks for that. From the image they do seem quite far off, but the facilities I`ve added are obviously "on land" or I would have got an error message, which is one of the things I was worried about.

I tried to convert a much larger area and it crashed the programme, so my guess it is driven by the amount of area trying to capture. I need to play around with it a bit more.

If you come up with anything let me know, I posted in the tech forums, the custom layer tool is acting sporadically funny for me. http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3423261

mikmykWS -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (10/1/2013 2:02:43 AM)

Yeah guys keep what you're importing in about city sized or a little bigger tops for the high res stuff.

El Savior -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (10/9/2013 2:16:14 PM)

When layer is added to Command can I delete original png files or do Command load them everytime?

Dimitris -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (10/9/2013 4:15:51 PM)

It loads them every time, they are not absorbed into the scen file (ie. it's not like MS Word where you are literally adding an image directly into the Word doc).

smudge56 -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (10/9/2013 5:22:46 PM)

Silenthunter is that an exact picture of the training area or made up?

pjb1 -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (10/20/2013 8:09:16 AM)

Are there any other programs besides Gmap that can do this?

JK07 -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (2/10/2014 1:18:45 AM)

I know this may not be the best place to ask, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Anyone have any idea as to why I get a "X has stopped working" error as soon as I click the .exe file in the Gmap download?

RoryAndersonCDT -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (2/10/2014 1:24:11 AM)

Do you get the same error with the version I modified?

JK07 -> RE: First Whack at Custom Layer Import (2/10/2014 4:12:40 AM)

Yeah, I'm getting the same message "Demo.Windows Forms has stopped working" with "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" beneath it. I'm sure its something to do with my computer and not the file, but I'm not sure whats causing it.
