Paul Wykes -> Useful Web site-Global SAM sites and more ? (9/29/2013 4:25:50 PM)

I`m sure this information/web site maybe old news for some, but I stumbled across whilst looking for SAM/radar information on Colombia.

http://geimint.blogspot.co.uk/2008/06/worldwide-sam-site-overview.html

Although the date in the link states 2008, it was updated in June 2013. It includes a KMZ file for google earth of locations of some SAW/EW sites.

Looking around the rest of the site looks like there are lots of interesting posts about SSBN sites etc.

I use this site:

http://geimint.blogspot.com/

On the right side look for Stragetic SAM Networks.

Both refer to the same site. Some of the push pins are slightly mis-aligned in the KMZ file, but if you know what you are looking for, this is an excellent site. Of particular clarity are the images of the Moscow SAM ring, which shows many of the S-300/S-400 variants in all full detail (again if you know what you are looking at - look for the shadows of the systems as that is the real giveaway).

Does anyone know of any KMZ files for military airfields?

Do you need one? Most military airfield locations are listed somewhere in open source (locational wise). Take that info and enter into GE and you will have the lay down and if you are really lucky you will see the aircraft types there.

I think for German airbases (incl. those closed after the Cold War) the most comprehensive resource is this: http://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/airbases.htm

Some of the reference material that has been located is excellent. Possibly a sticky, or a set of links on the Warfaresims webpage for some of this material would be helpful for scenario designers.

Thanks guys, only now I saw that someone answered to my question! [:)]

My question wasn't so much about the locations, actually, but rather the units deployed at the bases and the precise types of airplanes, for my Baltic scenarios. Western and Eastern German airbases were pretty easy. I also found some good info about the 16th Air Army and the airbases in the Leningrad military district. Poland was a bit tricky though, it required working through crude Google translations of Polish aviation blogs. So if anyone needs the serial numbers of every Su-22M4 ever deployed in the Polish Air Force, just give me a call. [:D]

Yes, that's my most important source right now. If that site goes down I'm pretty much screwed. I might actually pull a copy of it to my hard drive. [:D]
