[RS]Wedge -> MAP: War Over Vietnam vs CMANO ? (10/2/2013 7:59:05 PM)

I have been playing Modern Air Power: War Over Vietnam by HPS. I am more interested in the Vietnam era of air operations with in that theater. How much more in depth(difficult) is CMANO vs MAP: WOV?

I love that game.

Broadly MAP is a board game like game where Command is a detailed sim type game.

IMO MAP:WOV is easier to play but also much more limited than Command.

My biggest problem with MAP is it lacks versatility during play.
You can't change anything without backing out and manually editing the scenario.
Want to try taking out that bridge with MK83s on the strike aircraft instead of MK84s?
You'll have to exit and re-edit the entire scenario --there's no in game loadout choice.

FWIW, had a similar discussion in this thread comparing War over the Mideast (sequel to WOV) to Harpoon.

IMHO the biggest issue with MAP:WoW is that not only there are no restrictions on BVR shots against unidentified targets but all Phantom versions are equipped with radars that show excellent LD/SD capabilities and the Sparrows have a PK way higher than the ones actually displayed by AIM-7E and AIM-7ES versions in SEA. So the air war modelling is not that good. I do think that a boardgame like Downtown is a more realistic simulation of the air war over Vietnam than WoW.

On the other hand, I think that Command models with more fidelity the performance of sensors and missiles, avoiding situations in which a Sparrow armed F-4C performs more as an AMRAAM armed F-15C!
