Razbun -> Cargo not adding up (10/5/2013 9:04:22 AM)

I've been trying to get the cargo mechanism down by reading around the forums. My problem is that it doesn't add up the way I expect it to. I have mining stations with 1 small cargo bay (350) that have 400 worth of cargo. I know space ports share with planet so that isn't an issue. but do mines share as well? I have seen this happen on freighters as well, although rarely. I retrofitted some freighters to test and when I checked them with one cargo bay, they had ~700 cargo.

Does anyone have any idea how this is supposed to work? Am I just seeing a bug?

Thank you in advance!

No Only Spaceports share the same cargo with the planet and are unlimited.
Any other base need to exchange cargo with freighters and are limited. 350 cargo bay are very very small, special mining stations should have much more so they don't stop to mine when a freighter comes late or get destroyed.

Sorry i have no idea how the cargo managment works, since a player got no influence on this, its pointless to think about it. Just be sure to to give the designs enough cargo.

Thank you but that's just it. How much cargo is enough? I have no way of knowing. In the attached picture, a mining ship has over 400 with one small cargo bay. I don't want to include more cargo than necessary and slow down my ships.
If mining bases don't share resources what is the explanation of my bases having 3x or 4x of the cargo space worth of resources?

Sorry but you think about slow mining ships and just add 4 engines to that design ? They arn't slow they are crawling !
None of my private sector ships got less then 8 engines, normaly 10.
With just 4 engines your ships need very long to dock, special when they need to chase a planet with a fast own movement.

About the cargo, don't forget Mining ships are for emergency use not for regular mining jobs. The AI send these out when you don't got a mining base for that resource.
The ships mine the resource so long until the cargohold is full, then the ship return to the base/colony to unload. If you add more cargobay's the ship will mine longer, if you add extra mining engines the cargo fill up faster until you reach the mining cap (there should be a guide somewhere at the forum).

But i can't say why your ship got 2 x 218 cargo while the small cargo bay only can hold 350.

So i did more testing with the editor and nothing adds up. Mines with 1 cargo bay get 903 lead resources 2 cargo bays allow 2321 and 3 cargos allow 3701. How does anyone decide what the right ammount of cargo is in this game?

Razbun -> RE: Cargo not adding up (10/6/2013 8:16:40 PM)

did more testing in the editor. Changing around all variables to planets and mines.

the time a mine is placed down affects to a very small degree the cargo it can hold. mines placed exactly at the same time will end with the same cargo. while mines placed a minute later will have 1-7 cargo difference.

mines were tested with lead and then with silicon.
1cargo bay ~900
2cargo bay ~2315
3cargo bay ~3726

gases are slightly higher
1cargo bay ~1079
2cargo bay ~2336
3cargo bay ~3742

is anyone else seeing these numbers? what bothers me most is that the increase is not constant. the jumps from 1 to 2 is bigger than the jump from 2 to 3 cargo bays.

It also bothers me that my empire shows as having adequate sources and supplies of some resources, yet some base will start squawking over lacking a resource to construct something. Yet not a single Freighter will be moving said resource to equalize stocks.

Freighters act retroactively to fix shortages, yet the algorithm is incapable it seems of any proactive resource movements for strategic resources.

Hey guys, just a quick bump to check if anyone knows if this has been fixed or explained. Do we now know cargo functionality?

OzoneGrif_slith -> RE: Cargo not adding up (5/25/2014 4:26:07 AM)

It's been changed, and I've been observing it for a while without deciphering the new rules.
Apparently all races can store their own cargo onto everybody's planet now, using it like a proxy?

It also seems related to trade. I suppose the planet will buy these foreign resources if required.
I haven't seen massive resources shortage in Universe because of bad logistics, so I guess it's been mostly fixed.

Razbun -> RE: Cargo not adding up (5/25/2014 4:29:03 AM)

Thank you for the info Ozone, good to know that the shortage and logistics have been addressed. My question however is mostly around ships carrying cargo. They have a certain capacity that i put in the design, but they seem to carry significantly more than the number on the space. It is really frustrating to not be able to optimize my designs because I don't know how much Cargo capacity to give my ships.

No, this is your empire's stuff stored on your planet, which has been purchased by civilian freighters of a foreign empire. One or more foreign freighters should be coming in with the 'transport resource X' job to collect the foreign-flagged resource piles. The flag shows who reserved the materials.

Hello Razbun, I have never seen what you are describing in any of the previous games in this series, and checking my current Universe game none of my freighters are exceeding their capacity (Cargo Unit Capacity x Number of Cargo Bays).

I'm not very far into the game yet and onlt have 66 freighters, so Universe may have introduced a new bug, or you might have a bad game install. I'll check again when the game is more advanced,

Support for this game is usually excellent, so I'd post this together with screenshots into the tech support forum, and ensure you have a saved game handy in case Eliot & Co want to take a look at it.

SF-Inc -> RE: Cargo not adding up (6/3/2014 10:58:26 PM)

Well I had a nice sexy post about this problem happening in my games with pretty links and images. It was pretty gosh darn impressive. But...I am a tiny little new born account that I made just to respond to this specific thread so in a far less entertaining way:

I am having this same problem in my games.

Boring yes, but to the point. My gas mining station currently has a little over 11k of Hydrogen, Caslon, and Argon while it only has cargo bays to hold 3000 units. For the moment I am going to continue believing that my Joe Sixpack workers are actually Gandalf in disguise doing all their totally wizard stuff but I wouldn't mind some kind of clarification of what is really going on here.
