mcaryf -> SD2 Naval Unit counter (10/21/2013 8:29:38 AM)

At present it is possible to make some events conditional on the presence of particular numbers of enemy units within a certain distance of a specified location. This is often used to stimulate the production of emergency units to garrison/defend key locations. My request is that this facility is adjusted so that it can distinguish, if the designer wishes, between land and naval units. One area where I would use this ability is in my detection of the presence of raiders in order to implement the Tonnage War. Currently when simulating raider presence in the South China Sea I have to be careful not to include islands within my specified zones as I do not want land units to act as if they could be sinking notional transport units. Since the detection area is currently a circle centred on a specified point it somewhat limits my coverage. A second way I would use this feature would be to give the AI some knowledge of the relative numbers of naval forces in a specific area such as the Mediterranean. This might determine how aggressive the AI would be and whether certain amphibious operations should be attempted. In another post in a different forum I have argued that players should not really know how many units their opponent has but currently they do and this gives them an advantage versus the AI. In my view it should be the other way round with the AI being given more information than the player (it needs all the help it can get) and this proposal goes a small way to provide that. Regards Mike
