This looks amazing. I don't know how many of you like city sim games, but this one looks really unique. It's a medieval town simulator, and it's being developed by one guy who is doing all the work himself.

There's several preview videos on his site and he recently posted that the game is basically done now. Should be out in a month or two.

The sim genre has taken a hit in the last few years, with few releases and buggy controversial ones like the recent Sim City debacle. Good to see indies picking up the slack.

Not into the genre myself but have to admit it does look very nifty especially considering it is just one man making it.

Wow, looks great! I bookmarked this one to watch. I love city building, I might bite on this one! [:)]

"... Good to see indies picking up the slack..."

And Amen to that, love the genre and love Indy games. Good find and bookmarked too, it will be on Steam so I bet the price will be right too (as in Indy games tend to be not too expensive on Steam)

I hope the music in the Banished Gameplay Trailer is not representative of the music in-game. It's not very immersive. Reminiscent of the music in Age of Empires. Do you think maybe Shining Rock Software might use some authentic period music, aka Early Music? (Although I suppose there will be an option to mod in one's own preferred music, right?)

Boomer78 -> RE: Banished - medieval sim (10/26/2013 5:35:02 PM)

That trailer music does sound kind of familiar. It might just be some stock music the dev used... after all, he is doing all the work himself.

Music is an important thing in games for some people, but for me I usually end up muting it anyway.

I'm an Early Music fanatic (see my sig). It's a common lament among early musicians about how movies for example go to great lengths to recreate "authentic" costumes, sets, dialog, etc. then spoil it all (our perspective) by laying over it a modern music sound track.

For example, what's not to like about music like

this

or

this

or

Robert, I love all types of music. Have you heard of the record label Naxos? (I'm sure you have but I thought I would mention it to you and our audience). They have quite a catalog of Early Music at excellent prices and sound! [:)]

Have I heard of Naxos? Let's see ... how many Naxos early music CDs do I have? ... 50 at least.

Naxos is tops. (Dorian used to be.)

Interesting fact: My daughter performed Renaissance music for recorder for the game Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Ah yes, city building games. This one appears to be a get in my books.
As for music, it should be within the times of the game, but to me sound effects are more important..
Sound effects can act as cues in the game to make it more immersive.
Couple sound effects with music that changes with the game would be the best IMHO.

Boomer78 -> RE: Banished - medieval sim (10/27/2013 4:02:21 PM)

One mechanic I like about Banished is the dev is going for a realistic village/survival theme rather than RTS'ing the hell out of it and have giant monsters and tidal waves crashing into the town ala Sim City or a dozen other sim clones. I think fire, starvation, and disease will all play a part... but those are at least real threats that a medieval town would be faced with... not UFO attacks and earthquake machines.

This looks interesting.
