deadsunwheel -> Thinking about getting the Game (10/26/2013 5:55:58 PM)

Hello everyone,

As a fan of modern warfare and especially WW III scenarios I have been eyeing up Command for a little while now. Before pulling the trigger though I had a quick question for the community.

Being more interested in air rather than naval operations how many scenarios are pure air operations? If there are dedicated air only scenarios do any of them model operations over a hypothetical WW III scenario in Central Europe? I am thinking something along the lines of some scenarios in Bombing the Reich where delaying and disrupting enemy divisions is the mission objective.

Thanks for any input.

What you describe could be done. But keep this in mind, CMANO is an air/naval sim, and the ground forces are handled a bit abstractly. You wont find any division size units (unless you want to plop down thousands of individual platoons). The capability is there to model the complete Central Front in Europe during the cold war era with all the airbases and SAM batteries. Even the Kola Peninsula with all its bases and airbases and SAM network can be put in the game with just a few clicks. Not to mention there are templates for the US and Soviet ICBM fields. And did i mention that nuclear weapons are simulated?

Is that enough WWIII for you? :)

Honestly I don't know how many if any are purely air ops. If not they can easily be created by yourself or others in the forums. Don't discount the naval part of ops though, they are an extremely interesting aspect of the game on their on and especially when in conjunction with air units (give em a chance I think you will become a fan of Naval ops as well before long[;)]). And the game models them both and their coordination as best I have seen. With that I would recommend you take the plunge--pun intended. Finally: Welocome

Hey man,

I am similar to you in that I care more about air operations than the rest.
If I open the game right now I count about 8 pure air oriented scenarios in there (so that is excluding ones where you are also dealing with some cruise missile shooting ships etc)
Current version of the community scenario pack adds another nice one, and I know I myself (being an air enthusiast) have about three scenarios in the works, two close to being complete:
- Facing the Dragon: which pitches a purely air to air DCA Taiwan vs China situation (aka, F-16s, F-15s, F-22s vs J-10s, J-11s, SU-30 MKK etc)
- Frisian Flag: an as realistic as possible depiction of a single COMAO strike in this real life exercise over Northwestern Europe
- Dance of the Vampires: the well known chapter from Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, with a multi regimental Backfire attack taking on a Nimitz/Saratoga/Foch CVBG in the mid 80s. Yes that last one has some boats but it's mostly air warfare.

As for your other question: there is currently not a WWIII Central Europe scenario, but nothing is stopping you or anyone from making it. In fact, that is one of the ideas in my head for my next project after finishing up most of my current three.

Then the game (can you really call it a game? lol) itself: I love it. Yes I guess you should consider me a fanboi, just so you know, but I only became one after what I saw. I got into the closed beta in the last wave, late august. Being an air junkie, there was things I noticed that were broken or could be better. Issues that are brought up get fixed quite rapidly, as you can see in this forum the devs are very responsive, even though they are a small team. I was only in closed beta for a month and then it was released. I am really impressed with the amount of work that was done in that short timeframe. And they are passionate about it and i am confident they will keep improving this thing for a long time.

Is it perfect right now? Certainly not. Air warfare wise there are a number of things that need to be improved. Right now in my opinion if you want to fly succesfull real life air to air tactics, you can, but you will have to manage it yourself, the AI is not good enough for it. But dont forget how freeking complex air to air tactics are, I'm not surprised that the AI is not up to that as I am. Good thing or I might lose my job in real life [;)]

And there is stuff like right now you cant pre plan speed and altitude per waypoint, but it is in the works, the guys themselves know it too and I know it will come.

I havent had any regrets over spending time with this piece of software and it continues to suck away valuable time lol [:D]

So yes, this is a fanboi speaking, but I love it. Get some other people's opinions too, look at some youtube footage (baloogan does a lot of streaming every saturday night: http://baloogancampaign.com/

Read some AARs etc. And then make a decision [:)]
