The Green Beret mod for Myth II had a serious problem with rifles; the units behaved as if they still used bows and arrows or lances instead of rifles and such. The result was that they aimed for the spots where arrows would impact instead of bullets, so they hit hillsides rather than the enemies on top of it: http://www.cgonline.com/reviews/greenberet-01-r1.html The AI aside I don't think that the Total War engine has the physics incorporated for the use of artillery and rifles. It's probably easier to make similar games first, maybe one in the New World with Aztecs, Mayas and Incas. I think that fans are going to do mods for modern settings though.
