Mgellis -> [DONE] New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (10/31/2013 3:26:33 AM)

This is my first attempt at a full-blown carrier battle group scenario for Command. Basically, the Coral Sea and its group must destroy a target in Peru, get on station and remain there for a certain amount of time, and deal with a couple of surprises. I don't know if this is ready for "release," but I think it is pretty close. I would be grateful for any feedback people can offer. Thanks!

By the way, if anyone ever needs to know the carrier air wings for the 1960s or 1970s, here is a useful web site...

http://www.gonavy.jp/AirWingsf.html

(ATTN: Most recent version uploaded 4:30 on 11/6/13...the .zip file includes an .ini file so the scenario can be rebuilt properly with weapons in the carrier's hanger, etc. if the database changes sufficiently to require a deep rebuild.)

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (10/31/2013 6:41:08 AM)

Looking into it, Neutrals is a playable side!

billk111 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (10/31/2013 4:17:28 PM)

For some reason I cannot get this scenario to run, all I get is the world screen, nothing else.
Any ideas why?

jpkoester1 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (10/31/2013 5:18:17 PM)

Sounds like symptoms previously described when scenario and database version don't match. Maybe the scen author has used one of the beta builds with an updated DB to build the scenario so you wouldn't have the relevant database installed.

Regards,
JP

Thanks jpkoester1, wasn't sure what was wrong.

Mgellis -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/1/2013 2:51:08 AM)

Revised version (Neutrals no longer playable side)...

(ATTN: File deleted because other updates were made...newest version is attached to edited version of original post in thread)

Mgellis -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/1/2013 2:53:26 AM)

So...what do people think? Any other comments or suggestions? Is it ready for "official release" or does it still need work? Thanks in advance.

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/1/2013 6:48:08 AM)

It looks pretty good, i enjoy it. My gunless F-4s sometimes have a hard time because i take ROE serious for immersions sake. Will do more testing.

Btw. the enemy sub is emitting radar, send it to a deeper depth to make sure it stops.

billk111 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/1/2013 4:50:55 PM)

Sound good, just wish I could get it to run. Mgellis, what DB did you use and what build are you using.

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/1/2013 6:18:18 PM)

I really like the mission. Itīs quite difficult, my F-4B are pretty stupid and their missiles Ph is very low which is probably fair enough for 1969 in thick clouds.

Were there no ASW choppers assigned to Coral Seas group at that time?

Edit: I just noticed that the Skipjacks magazine is empty, only the torps in the tubes, is this intended?

I normally just use whatever is the most recent build available. So I'm using the most recent CWDB and Build 451 right now.

I hope this helps.

According to...

http://www.gonavy.jp/CVW-NLf.html

...the air wing at the time was...

(Last update on Dec.5, 2012)
CVW-15 (NL)
CVA-43 CORAL SEA
Sep.23, 1969 - Jul.1, 1970 (Vietnam War)
VF-151 Vigilantes F-4B
VF-161 Chargers F-4B
VA-82 Marauders A-7A
VA-86 Sidewinders A-7A
VA-35 Black Panthers A-6A
VFP-63 DET.43 Eyes of the Fleet RF-8G
VAQ-135 Black Ravens KA-3B/EKA-3B
VAW-116 Sun Kings E-2A
HC-1 DET.43 (*1) Pacific Fleet Angels UH-2C

...and it kind of surprised me too that there were no ASW choppers aboard. But apparently they didn't have any until 1971, when the UH-2s were replaced with SH-3s.

As for the submarine, however, no, that was just a mistake; I didn't know the magazines were empty. Thanks for catching that one.

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/2/2013 3:25:16 AM)

Very good, question is though, would the cruiser have a ASW chopper, a Seabat maybe, i have no idea what they used. But it doesnīt matter, the Skipjack can take care of that.
I think the order of battle is good the way it is, more peruvian naval assets might make it more interesting though.

You wont believe what sank one of my destroyers, 14.5mm fire, the culprit was within minimum range of my destroyer when it began...

Another good catch...one of the destroyers has a drone helicopter, a DASH, which has been added. Thanks!

As for what sank your destroyer...oh, yes, I believe you. It sank one of mine, too, when I was testing the scenario. :)

Mgellis -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/2/2013 6:50:41 PM)

I am posting a revised version of the scenario and deleting earlier versions...

I'm going to wait a day or two and let people try it out. After that, if people like it, and think it is ready, I will let Miguel know it can be included in the next scenario pack release (assuming, of course, he thinks it is good enough that it should be included).

Mgellis -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/3/2013 3:25:13 PM)

Okay, it's been about a day since I posted the most recent update, so I'm guessing people think it is ready to go. Miguel, if you also think it's ready, please feel free to include Stag Yellow (1969) in the next release of the Community Scenario Pack. Thanks!

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/3/2013 5:24:59 PM)

It looks good, i have 2 more things for you to consider.

The torpedos in the sub can only target submarines, if you want to give the player a ASuW weapon you have to add Mk14.(Yes i fired 8 at a ship and nothing happened [:D])

The Radar in Peru has a very short range, their Air Defence would be more effective if you give them a radar with more range and earlier warning.

Good ideas. I will look into that.

Mgellis -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/3/2013 9:46:53 PM)

I modified a few minor things (torpedoes, added a radar to the Peruvian side, tweaked magazines so the .ini file does not report errors anymore, etc.) and have uploaded the revised .zip file.

Tomcat84 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/3/2013 9:49:00 PM)

Might be able to give it a run tomorrow. Will report if so. Not sure though.

Gunner98 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/5/2013 7:45:35 PM)

Good little game. The first try, and my F-4 were getting smoked by F-86's! I would fire off the Stingers and knock a couple down but then once I got within Sidewinder range I needed a rear aspect shot, and had no guns so the Super Sabres just turned and turned and finally got inside my manoeuvrability and shot down F-4s at a rate of 1-1 or better - ouch! So I re-started and kept most of the F-4 on the deck, had one or two up and used them as Sabre bait to lure them over the CLG 6 Providence (Flack Trap) which fired off over half of its Terrier's to knock down about 7 or 8 F-86 and some of the Mirage's. then once the A-6 & A-7s were ready used all my phantoms to escort them in with a priority target of the A/C parking areas and cleaned them up (along with another 6 Mirage's and some Hunter's on the ground). Had to re-build for a 2nd Alpha strike to take out the remainder of the Fuel farm but at least air superiority was secure.

Good game. The Soviet AGI surprised me but my DD peeled off far enough to sink it quickly once the guns could bear. Didn't get a solid sub contact but the SSN Skipjack and the DASH were playing tag with one or maybe two of them most of the game.

I might suggest that the buildings you wish to consider Civilian be placed on an 'allied' side and have negative points triggered by their destruction. They are named school and hotel etc but this would make them more distinct.

Good fun

B

Tomcat84 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/6/2013 8:27:22 AM)

I played a little bit. I also agreed that the Red enemy school hospital etc might be confusing. I'd make them part of neutral side.

I thought that air to air loadouts wouldnt take long so i reloaded all "light" F-4 loadouts to heavy (why would they be light if they are going to expect hostile action?) but it actually took 4 hours. oops!

Put up an E-2 and of course detected incoming fast mover. Crap! No F-4s launchable lol. So I launched two RF-8s who IDed it and tried to gun, didnt work, but i denied the Mirage a shot and dragged it into the Providence's range and a whole bunch of Terriers took care of it and follow on enemy planes (no more VID, fast and originating from enemy territory was good enough for me at that point.

Sent a ten F-4 sweep that took down a bunch of Sabres and Mirages but the Sparrows really have low PK holy crap. And i couldnt get a single AIM-9 to be of use. Probably because of the thick clouds?

Anyway then i decided to launch my massive strike in several groups, but i got issues with some jets not launching right and trying to reload for 6 hours which pissed me off and so i logged off and stopped playing. Not the scenarios fault but I got angry haha

All in all I was having fun though, looks like a solid scenario.

Good idea, although I just made them neutrals. You don't lose points for hitting them, but they are part of the "if you blow them up, you will face a Board of Inquiry" message. Less chance of messing up something in the Event Editor that way.

The new version has been uploaded...it replaces the older download in the first posting in the thread.

Thanks.

Gunner98 -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/6/2013 10:18:41 PM)

Neutrals works for me. The scenario makes you realy deconstruct the enemy objective and take it apart piece by piece. Good work.

Tomcat - I had some issues as well - an A-6 was stuck on the Elevator for 6 hrs or so until I launched some of its buddies and an F-4 got stuck in the landing pattern for a couple hours and ran out of fuel - considered him a deck crash [:D]

JCR -> RE: New scenario for testing: Stag Yellow (1969) (11/29/2013 7:55:48 PM)

Great scen, but you should consider a small change:
Let the Peruvian Air Force stick to its patrol area!
(uncheck "investigate contacts outside patrol area")
If I were the Peruvian Air Force and up against the US Navy, would I venture out over the far pacific in ones and twos?
So they stay in front of the target objective and offer a credible defense against your alpha strike.

Also, why not a few more ships? ;)
