Playing strategy titles since Gulf Strike back on the Commodore and somehow missed this entire Close Combat series until now. I have Cross of Iron (which I guess was based on CC3 Russian Front?) and it is a great game until I ran into about six tanks with my two tanks and infantry. I picked up the Real mod and so far on mission two am happy with it. mostly armored cars and I can bring in a few light tanks.

So, are there others in the CC realm that have more squad based and less armor? I don't mind a tank or two but it seems like the AI purchases 80% tanks in some scenarios. I also bought Wacht am Rhein but have yet to play it. I wouldn't have probably bought any of them except for the deal of the week they run on the older titles, just bought War Plan Orange which I had never intended on doing, just cannot resist a deal.

The least tanks are probably in Last Stand Arnhem -- tanks are fairly rare outside of the British armored units there. The Longest Day is probably next as there are a significant number of infantry units that only have armor in support. Both Panthers in the Fog and Wacht am Rhein have a fair bit of armor, both US and German. All of these games use a unit selection system that tends to limit the number of tanks you can take, and the AI will typically have a fairly balanced force rather than all tanks.

There is a mod for CC3 called Real infantry, it is based on Real Red but deletes all armor that has a main gun above 3.7cm. Maybe it got ported to Cross of Iron?

Yes, this game is based on CC3, and CC3 had a stupid amount of tanks. This was my main criticism of CC3 (although it was a fun game to play) as infantry combat makes Close Combat what it is. If you're playing CC3 unmodded, I'd recommend not taking infantry at all, so I guess this advice stands for COI. As Kanov said, mods can fix the issue.

The real infantry mod is working well in Cross of Iron with mostly squad based tactics. I may go back and play the regular campaign unmodded later and will just have to choose more tanks and guns for my squad. My lack of experience with this game may also be a factor in my being routed with the unmodded campaign but for now it is the real infantry mod. Thanks that was helpful

Two months later of the game and yes that Real Infantry mod was perfection, some smaller vehicles appeared but it was mostly squads which was what I was hoping for.

Hi,Logged in just to reply, even though this isnt exactly new,im sure youve found your answer by now,but for others like myself that visit here, the first Five games in the series that were made in the late 1990's Bridge Too Far CC2 around1995. The best most people claim was Close Combat3 the Russian Front,CC4-battle of The Bulge and CC5Invasion Of Normandy,3-5 have pretty much the same set ups, very squad focused, follows your infantry from one battle to the next(if you can keep him alive!)and watch them level up in rank too.You play back and forth over the same maps/ground so the wrecked vehicles start to stack up which is a nice touch,i remember having to install a patch that gave you lifelike explosions and smoke, and main reason im here today is because, ive just found Close Combat Panthers in the Fog(which ive never seen on sale!?)included in the worlds cheapest Bundle!!lol...and this again is more of the same which i dont mind,as if it changed too much it wouldnt be Close Combat would it?!I dont ever want to see this morph into an FPS god forbid.I know theyve tried.Graphics sprites/colors are improved obviously, but instantly i can see theyve not got the same level of depth with the units as they used too.Ive only played it a few hours maybe i can change it in settings.Seems theyve remade/enhanced whatever you want to call it most of the first 5,easy to find if you look.I fancy getting cross of iron next!...Guessed instantly that must be the remake of no.3!?...In a nutshell 3/4/5 are a must!,and 2 although Arnhem is my favorite scenario of ww2,sadly CC2 didnt do it for me,even in 1997 the 1995 game was looking dated!!;)[:-]

Just noticed in your last post"some smaller vehicles appeared but it was mostly squads which was what I was hoping for."then you really wont be disapointed with 3/4/5 the Old/original versions if you can still get them,im told you can,Dont want to put a link up here for you as im not familiar with the rules. They are out there though.Seems they wee made for you,I cant speak about the new remakes as ive not seen them yet myself to comment on.Good luck.
