xAK Wakatu Maru sinks at sea

Well, this kind of explosions were quite common both in the IJN as the USN. You're lucky though, in real life BB Mutsu exploded in june 1943 while at pier with total loss.

BTW, I love this kind of detail in a game. [&o][&o]

I like the detail as well, except when it hurts...

So far I have had,

Massive explosion while loading
Ship hit an uncharted rock
Engine room opened to sea (which I think means someone opened the wrong valve!)

They have all been on xAK so I hope are linked to lack of crew experience.

obvert -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (2/11/2014 8:59:07 AM)

This detail is cool. I like he collisions that often happen in the Allied fleets when they use too many ships in a TF the most!

Well, they raise the Detection Levels for these subs. Now, you could do what Obvert has been doing in his AAR:
- set some air groups to night search
- set some air groups to day search
- set some air groups to day asw
bring 2-3 TFs of dedicated ASW to mop up.

As the detection raises during the night, it will keep rising during the day as well and the ASW groups will attack well known subs and therefore increase their chances of serious damage.
Looking at his AAR, he's killed a hundred and more subs in this way.

Indeed, however part of the problem at the moment is that I have very few DD with Type 2 depth charges and a lot of Allied subs can dive too deep for the current depth charges. I get some upgrades in July and August that should allow to form some good hunting groups for deep water.

Also, it takes time to get everything in place. Most of the ASW air groups are still flying Lilies and Anns and will for a few more months.

It is also a matter of scale, it is a long war, one sub per week sunk would be a couple of hundred of subs over the war!

Allies bombard Akyab again for little effect. I-153 takes a shot at the task force as it approaches but is damaged and will have to retire to Singapore for fixing.

Allied bombers hit one of my units across the river from Kalemyo and do no damage. This may have been a scouting raid prior to an attack across the river. I have a third of a division there dug in to level 3 forts.

12 units including about 2 divisions worth of troops have vanished from Chittagong[&:].

Reinforcements are pouring into Burma so I'll see what develops. It takes a long time to get from China to Burma because of the breaks in the railway between Wuchang and Changsha, Liuchow and Langson, Saigon and Phnom Penh. Pisanuloke and Moulmein.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (2/12/2014 4:56:38 PM)

May in Review

May has been a good month.

In China I have: taken Sining; reduced a pocket for a good haul of VP; pushed to the edge of the plains; isolated some 18 units; broken through on the Kweiyang/Kunming road. The only downsides are two self-inflicted wounds from badly considered attacks and that the Allied defense of the central plains seems to be solidifying. I also haven't knocked out much production nor broken the Allied air force.

In Burma I still have Magwe in full production and have down reasonably against the Lightnings. Reinforcements are arriving in theatre.

In Oz I took Katherine and inflicted heavy casualties on the Australians and caught a lot of planes on the ground.

At sea I had a very successful raid towards New Zealand that sunk a lot of enemy ships; a fair few troops, and even more planes. A raid in India was so-so, it sank a few ships but cost me one of the best DD I have at this time. My subs haven't had that much luck but also haven't taken losses.

Allied subs have appeared but mostly in the South Seas in support of operations. Only a very few subs seem to be engaging in commerce raiding.

Allied 4E have been mostly unseen. A few were used against ground troops in Australia and a few lost with the ships carrying them to New Zealand.

I have expanded a few key bases but the Allies have developed a number of very large bases: Chittagong and Suva are both level 9 airfields.

The economy continues well with all resource flows going well to the Home Isles and total supply increasing nicely (about 100,000 more over the month). Plane losses are manageable and newer models are, gradually, entering service.

I'll take my error as guidance and go along with that. However, it will be a while before I can spare the A6M5 needed to upgrade the groups.

The only use I can see for them is protecting against Catalinas launching torpedo attacks in areas like the North Pacific or in raiding task forces. There is one group of 9 that I will divide and put onto 3 CA to give them a little CAP when operating as raiders.

There are definitely some utilitarian uses for the Float Fighters. Using them to provide unexpected CAP at size zero bases can be real useful. Of course the key is to not get them into "real" combat against non-float fighters. Using them against unescorted bombers can be fun.

Disablements aren't too important (except for the supply lost) and got some good damage on the Chinese. Surprising that the Chinese don't have a supply minus.

China

Chinese forces are reported heading for the road junction in the mountains East of Kunming (Hex 71,48)[:(]. It is currently occupied by a shattered Chinese Corps and I have a single Recce regiment present if I attack today and the Chinese reinforcements do not arrive it may be able to occupy the hex, if Chinese arrive this turn it will be annihilated. If I take the hex forces arrive the next day that should be able to hold it for a while.

Recon suggests Mengtze is unoccupied. An air drop there may be able to open another threat against Kunming. I will only be able to fly paras to there until the airfield can be built up. However, there is a river on the most direct route from Kunming.

Everywhere Else

Peace.

Despite the lack of attacks, Allied army loss VP goes up by 2. Presumably, this is for slowly starving units.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (2/14/2014 1:21:08 PM)

In 16 days I will have all parts of the 1st Tank Division and in 24 days all those of the 2nd Tank Division.

I need to decide where, in China, to use them so as to gather the parts together.

For an attack along a road I can attack: Chihkiang; North of Kweilin; North of Tuyun, or West towards Kienko.

Chihkiang is well defended, and I have difficulty getting supply up to where the attack towards Kienko happens (but this may ease once the road from Sian is open). The other two attacks involve river crossings. The Tuyun one would have the best result if successful as it could probably lead to taking Kweiyang.

Other options would involve moving tanks through the woods which is slow and also puts them in a bad supply situation.

If two tank divisions accompanied by artillery attack across a river into 3 dug in Chinese Corps will that have a good result?

setloz -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (2/14/2014 2:29:29 PM)

why not use the tanks in a grinding situation?
For example - On one of the hexes on the road from Sian to Chengtu, pick a hex where you are sure the chinese have not AT guns and grind at it.
Without the few (4 or 6 iirc) AT units, the chinese units will not do any dent into the IJ tanks.

So I would just form a battle group tanks + strong div + heavy arty on the road and start grinding. You could break into the chinese plains in this way and finish the war early.
I would stay away though from the chinese AT units.

I think they only get 2 AT regiments. One of those is stuck up near Tienshui and will be shattered if it gets to safety (which will be in about 3 months time). No idea where the other one is.

I have been having difficulty getting adequate supply to attack along the Sian to Kienko road. That may change when the road from Sian is opened past Tienshui. There would be 2 Wood/Rough hexes I need to take plus crossing the river into Kienko or moving out into the rough hex.

If I attack at Tuyun I have the one wood/rough hex to take plus Kweiyang as a rough hex and then am out into the rough where I can out manoeuvre the Chinese. However, that does mean 6 weeks flogging through the woods or a river crossing at the start.

So far I haven't found the tanks that wonderful. However, they are now upgrading to the "Type 1" which has twice the armour and a big increase in anti-armour rating.

setloz -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (2/14/2014 3:49:04 PM)

Well, I've had a lot of attacks by massed tanks on chinese troops where my losses were 10-20 disabled vehicles and theirs were 100-500 disabled squads. And once their morale and supplies started sinking, they'd crumble like a cookie.
Either way, I think that keeping up the pressure on the chinese is important.
Having lost both Sian and the supply production around Changsha they will be hard pressed for supplies.
Starving the chinese is the best option. So, attack them, bomb them & their airfields, anything that uses their supplies is best for you. Even firing AA guns uses supplies (not that they have a lot of those either).

2nd Recon attacks on the road junction towards Kunming. 3 Chinese Corps have arrived and it drives into an ambush. Afterwards, it has lost all squads and has only 1 tank active with 3 disabled. Infantry arrive but the hex is now firmly Allied controlled and that that will make a drive on Kunming much more difficult. Bombing had failed to prevent the force moving into the hex.

Numerous sweeps fail to find any Allied planes.

Forces enter the mountain hex at 80, 38. Bombing of this hex shows that there is the 42nd Chinese Corps, the 34th Separate Brigade, and the 1st War Area present. The 42nd Chinese Corps had 101 AV before it was driven out of Tienshui. The 34th Separate brigade was the only front-line unit in the defense of Lanchow back at the beginning of March. There is a good chance these defenders are in a poor way. The Chinese opened the hex West from Tienshui on the 29th May so I think the earliest reinforcements can arrive from there is June 10th. I have a third of a division present now with another third arriving on the 6th and 7th. So I could launch an attack on the 8th to try and take the hex. Will keep up bombing it for the moment.

Pacific

Lots of ineffective sub action for both sides. Allies score 1 hit with a dud torpedo.

This was an interesting combat:
