September 26th

Allied forces sweep into the Makassar straits. The heavy cruiser force that was supposed to react to this does nothing and 3 of the better SC are lost.

Invasion fleet? [X(]

Destroyer bombardment forces, but I don't know that I can tell a fast transport force of APD from a raiding force of DD. A report of 7 ships 3 DD and 4 APD is as likely to be 8 DD as a fast transport force.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/8/2014 4:35:02 PM)

September 27th

7 Fletchers try to raid Balikpapan. They encounter, and sink, a small PB on the approach but then run into Tanaka on the Mogami with 2 other CA and 4 DD. The battle does not go well. 2 Fletchers take hits from 20cm shells but no significant damage and will have no problem reaching Soerabaja. Mogami takes a 5 inch hit that knocks out one of its main gun turrets so will need some yard time. DD Isonami is hit by a torpedo[:@], the magazine explodes, and she sinks immediately. In the morning, Allied forces are 9 hexes from my dive bombers so no strike from them and the Nells at Kendari fail to strike - but I forgot to notice they had no torpedoes and they had poor bomber pilots so a good job[8|]

Allied PB4Y-1 strike at a cruiser force of mine at Aitape. Despite good RADAR detection, and overwhelming numbers, the N1K1-J are unable to close and do little damage to the Allied planes. However, they may have interfered with the attack because no hits are scored and flak takes care of some more: 9 PB4Y-1 lost for 4 N1K1-J and 1 N1K1.

Allies bomb heavily the forces at Cheribon attack and capture the base, giving them an airfield in range to fighter sweep Palembang. A few Franks had flown in to interfere but the Allied escorts protect the bombers: 9 Ki-84a for 9 P-40K, 4 P-39N1, 3 P-40E.

Some Nells out of Cocos Islands make an attempt on an AKV near Java. Allied CAP arrives too late to do any damage but no hits scored.

I am withdrawing most forces on Java to a last stand at Batavia, just leaving a division at Bandoeng

P1Y2 to 3/44

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/8/2014 4:36:12 PM)

September 28th

I-26 takes moderate damage (28/22/1) near Pearl and will return to the yards.

Various other sub action with no effect.

Supply at Rabaul only has 2 months left - that is barely okay, it will give me time to get most everything back from Eastern New Guinea. The troops at Rabaul are going to be abandoned (as, probably, will those at Manus and Buka).

Ki-84r to 5/44.

SS I-85 and SS RO-111 arrive.

Air transport is the friend of cut-off troops. Fly out the infantry and what artillery tubes you can cram onto a plane and send them somewhere that needs reinforcing.

IJA units are a pushover once they're out of supply. Abandon Rabual, Manus and Buka as operational port and airbases, but get the troops back to fight another day (leaving behind a rear-guard strong enough to stop an air-drop, of course).

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/10/2014 8:10:24 AM)

September 29th

A damaged xAK surprises me by sinking in port at Ulithi - does seem to have offloaded its troops first.

An xAK is hit by a torpedo from SS Spearfish, in the South China Sea North of Palawan; she detaches in an escort task force and SS Spearfish attacks again and puts two torpedoes into her; she sinks. Heading back to home with just some resources on board so no great loss.

N1K5-J to 9/45

SS I-183 arrives

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/10/2014 8:10:49 AM)

September 30th

Allies bomb forces retreating from Kalidjati; not enough to stop them escaping before the attack.

Allied paras land at and take an undefended Sampit on the South of Borneo.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/10/2014 8:13:26 AM)

September Overview

Allies have pushed forward in Java, and just landed on Borneo. More defenses have been thrown up. Damage to oil wells is less than I expected. Night bombing seems to have stopped and Allied bombers redirected to helping the ground troops take the rest of Java.

Ship losses for the month: 2 xAK, 1 xAKL, 1 AMc, 1 YO, 1 TK, 11 PB (mostly the Anryu class), 3 SS, 4 SC, 5 DD, 1 CL (one of the training cruisers).

Ships sunk claimed for the month: 1 CV, 1 BB, 2 CVE, 1 CL, 5 SS, 4 DD, 8 AM, 1 SC. Actual sunk I think is more like: 1 CL, 1 SS, 8 AM, 1 SC.

VP gain excluding bases: 1257:647 in Allied favour so only just better than the 2::1 ratio that I need.
        Japan Allied
Total: +344 +1350
Bases: -303 +93
Air: +500 +538
Land: +91 +482
Sea: +56 +237

September Industry

The consequences of the Java invasion begin to bite. "Eq. Supply" is allowing for all oil and fuel converted to supply. Contrast with July when it went up by 182,452. Fuel usage should cut back next month as the evacuations are stopped and supply usage with no expansion of engines or aircraft needed. HI is beginning to accumulate rapidly as merchant production has stopped and some cut back on armaments and air production.

Oil: -130,949
Fuel: +24,410
Supply: +43,873
Eq. Supply: -49,571
HI: +107,100
Arms: +8,617
Vehicles: +3,131

An oddity in pilot training programme. The 10 month IJN pilots are less experienced than the 9 month ones.

Been using lots of air lift to recover units.

Rabaul though is adjacent to Namatani and Buka 2 hexes from an Allied base so both are subject to LRCAP that will shoot down transports. Also, there aren't, yet, many naval transports planes with the range needed.

Is this normal? I have two "RADM Tanaka, Raizo" one leading a task force and one commanding a base force. They have the same, excellent, stats.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/11/2014 6:01:31 PM)

October 1st

Allied cruisers bombard Balikpapan for no significant damage as I withdrew the air power to Samarinda.

Allied cruisers bombard Manus and do some damage to the troops.

Allied attack at Bandoeng because I withdrew one of the divisions from there. Good result as Allies do not reduce forts, suffer a 1::15 result and are reported as losing about 50 devices.

Otherwise, very quiet day.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/11/2014 6:13:57 PM)

Some force pool information

Fighters

IJA -

415 Ki-27b (obsolete, have some trainers)
37 Ki-43-Ia, 25 Ki-43-Ib, (obsolete)
129 Ki-43-Ic (obsolete, have one training Sentai)
37 Ki-43-IIa (obsolete but could be used for kamikaze)
24 Ki-43-IIb (I still have some groups of these used for night coverage)
83 Ki-43-IV, producing 121, (have use for these and will upgrade slowly to them)
65 Ki-44-IIa (have a few groups on night duty with these but should, probably, retire them)
12 Ki-44-IIc (groups using these are being phased out as they take losses)
130 Ki-84a, was producing 155 but have turned off as expect these to last until the Ki-84r is available

IJN -

71 A5M4 (a couple of large training groups used these)
77 A6M2 (just used for training now)
155 A6M5 (training plus some rear area defense)
15 A6M5b (one group on one carrier uses these)
135 A6M5c (main stay on the carriers)
28 J2M2 (one group using these)
122 N1K1-J, producing 232, the main fighter everywhere

Main fighters these days are the N1K1-J supported by Ki-43-IV, Ki-44-IIc or Ki-84a. Expect the Ki-84r to appear in December and the Ki-83 in June or July.

Night Fighters

25 J1N1-S, producing 40, (one group of 20 active, a group of 18 arriving soon, and a sentai of 45 that can upgrade to this is all the night-fighters I can have in 1943).

First Army night fighters should be available in December.

WAD

There are quite a few cases of IJN officers holding sea commands at one point in the war, then shifting over to shore-based commands when the IJN started running low on ships.

In Tanaka's case, he fell out of favour with the IJN High Command.

In the game terms, it doesn't model leaders particularly well, so it's possible to have Tanaka "wear two hats" and command his base force and his task force despite the fact that one is near Balikipapan and the other is in Japan.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/12/2014 9:15:10 AM)

October 2nd

Manus is bombarded twice by cruisers; likely an attack will come here soon.

Troops bombed on Java.

Another Chinese Corps surrenders.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/12/2014 9:17:00 AM)

October 3rd

Heavy bombing at Manus and on troops on Java. On Java some Franks try to interfere but he has heavy LRCAP, including Thunderbolts.

37 D4Y4 fly off CVE and attack a group of DD in the Makassar straits. Flying at extended range they lose 7 planes shot down to score a single 500kg bomb hit. Why so bad? Not the weather, which was Partial Cloud in the morning and Moderate Rain in the afternoon. Pilot fatigue was okay, plane fatigue is quite high now but wasn't beforehand. I know DD are hard to hit but his SBD seem to do better against mine.

I-10 sinks xAP Felix Roussel near Albany.

I-35 is lost in the Makassar straits.

I-24 is lightly damaged North of Exmouth attacking what seems to be an Amphibious assault task force.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/12/2014 9:19:59 AM)

October 4th

Fighting at the river mouth to Samarinda costs DD Kikuzuki (lost to a torpedo) and DD Yamakaze but prevents any Allied attack on Samarinda. In the morning Allied DD are in range from CVE and Kendari but only strikes from two of the three CVE launch. Damaged DD Cushing takes 4 800kg hits[X(] and sinks. Damaged DD Shaw takes 2 800kg hits but is reported as still afloat[:@]. Other Judy strikes miss.

A task force sent to raid Allied forces reinforcing Sampit ends up 1 hex short and fails to react. May get a chance for an attack next day.

Allied cruisers bombard Batavia.

Allied airpower hits the troops at Bandoeng, damage minor but 74 points of disruption on the infantry division.

Impressed by the shipyard at Kure, they can replace a main turret on a heavy cruiser in 2 days[X(]

Signs Allied may be exploiting my retreat from Burma and moving on Akyab.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/12/2014 9:23:07 AM)

October 5th

At Sampit, night, clear conditions, 12000 yards visibility, 1 CA, 2 CL, 4 DD versus 26 LCT. Should be a slaughter, instead 2 LCT are sunk and one damaged then the Allies manage to escape[:@]. (The sunk LCT aren't listed in the ship sunks display - do I get any VP for them?)

Liberators try low-level night strikes against the Japanese task force to no effect.

Nells hit the Allied port at night hoping for some damaged LCT to finish off but no such luck and only minor damage inflicted.

Allies bombard and land at Manus. Allies suffer heavy disruptions (were they insufficiently prepared?):
quote:

TF 118 troops unloading over beach at Manus, 101,119

Allied ground losses:
719 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 118 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 93 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 40 (0 destroyed, 40 disabled)
Vehicles lost 12 (1 destroyed, 11 disabled)

13 troops of a USA 42 Rifle Squad accidentally lost during unload of Americal Infantry Div
13 troops of a USA 42 Rifle Squad accidentally lost during unload of Americal Infantry Div /5
13 troops of a USA 42 Rifle Squad accidentally lost during unload of Americal Infantry Div /9
Motorized Support damaged beyond repair during unload of Americal Infantry Div /14

However, Allied bombardments have destroyed the defenders so will probably be able to take the base with ease.

Allied bombers hitting Bandoeng keeping up disruption but doing little damage.

Buitenzorg auto-flips, maybe I should have left something there to prevent this.

Army dive bombers hit at Allied DD; 17 bombers, 3 hits, but the 100kg hits aren't enough for serious damage. Nice to see the Army joining in. Need to start thinking in terms of the Allies landing CAP traps though.

CVL Mizuho completes conversion.

Do you know what the mechanics are that favor escape? m-m has done this to me in downfall about a dozen times it seems as Japan escaping, very frustrating...

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/14/2014 10:05:47 AM)

October 6th

3 subs try and sink the damaged DD Shaw heading for Soerabaja, (she is making about 7 knots), all 3 miss.

Some Franks deploy to Batavia to intercept Allied bombers: 14 Ki-84a for 12 P-40K, 4 CW-22, 4 B-25C, 1 B-25D1, 1 B-17E. Another 9 Franks are damaged at Batavia and may prove difficult to extract but all together an okay trade and it keeps him flying fighters and taking ops losses.

His bombing at Bandoeng continues to do no effective damage but keeps disruption high.

Manus falls at the first attack.

An xAk is lost to a Dutch sub in the South China Sea, she was carrying part of the 30th recon regiment and many support squads go down - annoyingly the APD in the task force failed to rescue troops (I guess the xAK detached as a separate task force and then sunk).

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/14/2014 10:07:57 AM)

October 7th

Minor damage to a Dutch sub in the South China Sea.

My troops at Manus are eliminated.

Tried a bombardment against the Allied forces just arrived at Batavia, bad move and suffer from counter-bombardment.

Heavy Allied bombing of Bandoeng again, keeps up the disruption but no real damage and morale is holding. He made no changes to protect against my LRCAP - pity I pulled it.

Horrible Allied sweep of Magwe[:(]: 15 Ki-44-IIc, 7 Ki-43-IV, 4 Ki-84a, 6 N1K1-J for 4 F4U-1, 5 P-47D2.

A6M5d-S to 1/44 (will be available 12/43).

First Ki-83 factory completely repaired[:)], just by itself that would have the Ki-83 available 1/45. However, it will also help the other factories repair. Next factory has 3 left to repair (on average, should be done before the end of the year).

No idea, except that there is clearly a bias in favour of the Allies[:D] (Possibly, observer bias[:D]).

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/15/2014 12:03:25 PM)

October 8th

Good damage on the SS Spearfish off Palawan by an SC; 2 solid hits and a fuel leak.

I-177 is lost at Batavia.

Allies bomb Palembang airfield at night, many planes lost on the ground.

Ki-84r to 4/44.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/15/2014 12:04:47 PM)

October 9th

An Allied sub discovers the minefields at Merak are still there, painfully.

Liberators hit Samaranda airfield at night, there is no night CAP up and I lose 4 planes on the ground.

Oscar IIIa and Georges from Samarinda strike at landing craft unloading at Sampit. Coming in barely above the treetops the Allies only get 4 minutes warning and the P-38G on CAP at 20000 feet cannot prevent the attacks. 8 LCT are sunk. (Do I get VP for these? They aren't listed against ships sunk.) and take with them some engineers and their vehicles. Apparently, even a 60kg bomb is enough to sink one of these.

A sub-chaser finds the SS Mingo off Palawan, 1 solid hit and a near miss that knocks out some torpedo tubes will send her back to the yards.

Allied launch a bombardment attack at Batavia.

Thunderbolts sweep Magwe, 18 are downed, I lost 39 aircraft but a few of those will have been at Sampit.

Stop production of Ki-84a; I have 130 in pool and those should last out until the Ki-84r becomes available. The Ki-84a has been a great disappointment.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/17/2014 4:36:17 PM)

October 10th

More night strikes at Samarinda, this time there is some CAP. 1 Plane lost on the ground but 14 in the air, only 1 B-24D1 shot down, [:@][:@]

Allies have flown some fighters into Sampit.

Tried something, I created 12 barges at Batavia then loaded them with supply and sent them to Oosthaven where 16 Mitchells struck and sunk them. Not sure if this cost me in VP or whether it actually moved any excess supply from Batavia.

B7A2 to 4/44

VP ratio falls below 2::1 in my favour.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/18/2014 9:46:04 AM)

October 11th

A few Nells hit Sampit airfield at night and destroy 7 Spitfires on the ground, doesn't stop the Allies developing to size 2 even though damage on the base is reported by recon.

Liberators hit Balikpapan oil wells at night, no CAP, 1 oil hit claimed but it looks like no damage to the wells.

I-20 turns on the hunters and sinks AM Mildura near Tasmania.

321 KuS-1 arrives, another Night Fighter group, not sure where to send it: Singapore, Magwe, Samarinda or Miri. Samarinda will get the most action but I think Miri is the most important place to protect. However, it is a small airbase so basing 2E planes there isn't the best. Magwe needs the protection and is a level 9 airbase but there is little indication of an Allied attempt to close it. (It is turning somewhat academic, MrKane seems to have cut back on night strikes.)

Sub detects a large task force reporting as 10 ships, 2 CA, 2 KV and 6 BB heading towards Tulagi. Have reports at Manus of BB and LSI(L) so invasions in the Pacific seem likely but which way will he attack?

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/18/2014 9:48:33 AM)

October 12th

Night strikes against Palembang airfield, the Irvings get 2 Liberators and flak 2 more but heavy losses amongst the defending fighters, including 2 Irvings, and 3 planes lost on the ground. (Or maybe he hasn't abandoned night strikes after all...)

Night strike against Sampit loses 3 Nells to flak, guns at base has gone up from 17 to 204 so looks like he has landed some serious AA.

Sweeps of Sampit do well with 14 P-38G, 8 Spitfires, 6 Thunderbolts downed but not sure how much I lost there rather than at Palembang. All told end up losing 47 F or NF for 30 Allied and 55 for 41 total air VP.

Allies also hit Billiton airfield and destroy a single Jake on the ground.

SS Spearfish is again attacked by an SC and takes a single Type 2 DC hit - I hit her before with 2 hits so am surprised she is still on station off Palawan. Could be fog of war and a different sub.

DD Hamanami arrives.

A new model of Liberator is seen over Billiton, the B-24J, can't see the point of this, trades 12 max speed for an extra point of durability. Strange, the B-24D seems the best model and the two subsequent models are just worse.

Lowpe -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/18/2014 11:27:11 AM)

Night strikes can be frustrating in the short run for the Allies, until they start to figure them out. A lot of planes stray. Sometimes they don't fly. Altitude, morale, leadership, plane fatigue, experience, HQa, all play large roles and it can be hard to figure out at first. Not to mention all the supplies they consume.

Also, it seems to me that you are putting up a stiff resistance to his missions, despite your losses, and American pools aren't huge at this date.

Was this last attack a massive strike at only one base?

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (12/18/2014 11:35:33 AM)

I think his pools were generally running low so he redirected the Liberators to help support the ground offensive as that conserves planes and he can use them later on day light raids once he has Thunderbolts able to sweep the bases.

Or he may have decided he doesn't need to destroy the oilfields at Balikpapan and Palembang because he can take them by ground before the end of the year.

Now that he has tried a few night raids against air bases, I think if I started another game I would be inclined to propose a house rule to avoid these - not because of the damage and air-air losses but the massive morale hit even almost ineffective bombing has on groups.
