Ranger75 -> Erratic units in on-line play of large scenario (1/21/2003 1:30:49 AM)

I seek help with my scenario. It is a large scenario using the maximum number of units per side.

The scenario works fine in solitaire mode on my computer. However, when my opponent and I try to play it on line, a few of the units on side two behave strangely. I cannot access them by clicking, only by selecting them from the unit roster. They do not move normally. They hop right to the destination hex. If an enemy unit triggers reaction fire from one of these units, the game freezes.

These peculiar behaviors showed up with about 7% of the on-board units and 5% of the reinforcements. Side one units are just fine.

I've tried retransmitting and reloading the scenario files, but the problem remains. My opponent and I have successfully played several on-line games before, so this problem seems to be related to the scenario I built.

Any ideas?

What game, what version, updted oobs, system info etc.;)

Hi Chief,

We are playing SPWAW V7.0. We both use Windows 98. We connect using an AOL Internet connection.
This arrangement has worked just fine when playing other scenarios that came with the game, including the big "Steel Shield" sceanrio.

We are playing a scenario I developed using the OOB's that came with the game.

Several German units are acting up, such as motorcycle infantry, FO's, recon vehicles, engineers and HQ units. (The A0 HQ unit is fine, the others are not.)

There is also an Italian force on the board. It is fine except for three infantry recon units.

Side 1 has American and British forces. No problems with them.

I'm wondering if I have hit any limits that are peculiar to on-line play.

Best Regards, and thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

My first guess is that you have too many units on board. There is a limit. IIRC its 400 per side or 400 total. By the way did you ever check why ver. 7 was updated to 7.1, might be a clue there also.

Have you tried deleting the preferance file before starting the game ?

thats the only guesses I have so far, maybe someone else will jump in.:)

I think that as Chief stated, the problem is linked to the # of units, in relation with the online playing.

I invite you to read the post from Paul Vebber on the below thread: it's pretty explanatory of what's up with Spwaw and internet playing.

Resisti: Thank you for confirming my suspicions on this problem. I could not give him better info. I didn't want him to sit and wait and get disgusted with the game, and leave. Thank you :D

Hello guys,

Thanks for the info. I read the string about the TCP/IP issue. RATS! That's a tough one. However, as I have played successfully over the net before, I sure hope my problem is with the scenario and not with the process.

The scenario is at the total unit limit, so I cut that back to see if the scenario will work with a little slack. We'll test it tomorrow. I'll report the results.

Don't worry about my going away from the game. I've been hooked on these for years. What a great product and a great concept!

Ranger 75: Sometimes when people don't get an instant answer on a forum they have a tendancy to assume they are not welcomed there. So I try to respond with some possible answer to let them know they are being listened to. Then when one of the 'experts' (experienced) has time he can get a better answer. The final result is a happy camper (wargamer). Now thats said "Welcome Aboard":)

Chief and Resisti,

Thanks for the help. Our trial with slightly reduced unit densities failed, so I tried with 95% and then 80% of allowed unit densities. Those failed, too.

I am going to build a small scenario to confirm that I can make a workable on-line scenario. Then I will move up to bigger versions until I find the practical limit.

My gaming partner and I enjoy the ability to have some time and space to permit maneuver, the employment of reserves, and the possibility of deception and surprise. Small and short scenarios minimize those features, so we are hoping to tangle in a big meeting engagement. We'll see what happens.

Best Regards,

Ranger 75....Good luck on your problem, please post back here when you solve your problem, it'll help otheres. :D

Ranger75 -> Problem Solved (7/23/2003 9:15:44 PM)

REMF aka Warrior, sent me the solution to the unit's behaving strangely. They were supposed to be player 2's units, but they were coded for player 1.

Here is his solution:

In the editor, open your scenario and hit Deploy for Player Two units. It should open with the A0 HQ unit showing. Now hit F2, then "N" for next unit, F2, and so on for all Player Two units. Go to the unit roster ("H) and you should see all the units are now P2 for player two.

Worked like a champ. Thanks!
