to get his feet wet..........what scenario/rule sets do yall rec. for me to start to get a grasp of this baby? Big doesn't run me off as I have played WITP-AE

There is no shame in firing up the game with a clean Barbarossa without optional rules at first. Every old-school WIF-player started there I guess.

No problem. Start out with Barbarossa and the Guadalcanal scenarios to get a grip on the land and naval part of the game respectively.

Then you can dive into the grand campaign if you wish or maybe do the Waking the giant campaign. That campaign starts out with the Japanese offensive in Nov/Dec 1941.

With this start you dont have to consider US entry or the implications of aligning minors in the Balkans. The war in France can also be a bit tricky at times and you get to do a lot of fighting from the get go. The downside is that many interesting decisions about strategy are made at that time.

Regarding options I would recommend to start out slowly and use the options for beginners defined by Steve in the game.

Do you know if you can save the game at any point in a turn?

Yes, you can play hotseat with yourself without being online. There's a "Solitaire" mode. It's my favorite way to play MWIF, in fact, as there isn't nearly as much fog of war as there is in a game like WITP/AE.

There are some sub-phases where you can't save, but it's never a big deal. By default, the game autosaves at the start of every significant sub-phase, and your save directory will quickly fill up with dozens of these autosaves, each separately named.

You can save at most times. Don't worry about that :) During some shorter phases you can't save, like in alot of turn-based games. You can play solitaire with yourself yes.

I was thinking this ...

*Barbarossa
*Guadalcanal
*Global War 1939 start (play until end 1940 ... to get used to the Poland, Netherlands, Belgium and Conquest of France: War in China for Japs)
*Waking Giant(To get used to the Japanese opening moves into Indo, Malaya, Philippines etc.)
*Then Start your first full game Global War 1939

Never having played the board game i am looking forward to some AARs and maybe someone will do a youtube letsplay, or would that not work because turns take too long. How long do turns take?

Turns can go by quickly in the early war, and longer in the late war. Turns can also go on longer when significant events are underway (e.g. first turn of German attack on France, first turn of Barbarossa, Japan's big attack in the Pacific, Normandy landings, and so on).

Here are some pre-release AARs: one of the 1939 global campaign, and one of the 1944 global campaign. They are a little bit stalled right now, but you can get a feel for some of the look & feel of the game.

Of the 60 phases in the game, I think there are automatic saves in 50+ of them. There are also automatic saves for about half of the subphases. Subphases exist for the combat sequences, the declaration of war phase, forming Vichy France, etc. To keep track of all the details in the midst of a combat involves a lot of extra variables. Writing them out to the disk (for a saved game) and restoring them requires a lot of code and runs the risk that some things might get dropped. As I said, most of time a save can be made (and often is done so automatically if you have that flag set to ON). But in the middle of the 28 subphases of a naval combat, making saves is usually not possible. Sorry, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

Barbarossa, Novice rules, Solitaire mode. Then the same for Guadalcanal.

For an even faster start, restore the saved games for those two scenarios. Those skip over selecting optional rules, scrapping units, lend leasing units, randomly drawing units, and setting up units on the map. They start with most of the preparations for "setting up" done.

The drawbacks to using the Fast Start games are the same as their strengths: you don't get to select optional rules, scrap units, ...
