Kruos -> To board or not to board.. (11/8/2013 2:23:13 PM)

"Boarding calculation" -> How doest it work? Race factor involved?

ASHBERY76 -> RE: To board or not to board.. (11/8/2013 3:21:22 PM)

No race factor, which is disappointing.

Defibrillating thread....ZAP!!!

Do people board and if so why over simply annihilation?

Boarding means getting beat up ships with different specs to your lovely homogeneous fleet and wiasting build space/research time on boarding pods?

I do keep a single fleet of boarding vessels to get mining bases but even that I query as I still have to send out a construction ship to fix it. Also have to wait for pods to regenerate. Also generally have a more normal 'kill all' fleet nearer and its just easier to send that?

I'm actually focusing more on boarding in the end-game. I'll scrap the weak escorts and whatnot, but I'll keep the frigates and above and either form them into suicide fleets or have them protect minor colonies/stations. This is particularly helpful when you run into cash and resource shortages, since capturing enemy ships doesn't cost you anything but maintenance.

In fact I probably would have lost to the Shakturi if I didn't capture dozens of their ships [:)]

I cannot speak for other players, but as pirates you board because your ships are very likely to have assault pods anyways for raiding.

When playing as an empire, I don't bother, because as you said, I don't regard it as worth the time or effort or risk or the attention needed to make it worthwhile.

BTW, I think racial troop strength affects boarding.

In very early pre-warp game, I board pirate ships because they have superior technology I can analyze for tech.

Later I board just because I can. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that scrapping a captured ship in space gives a little cash and disassembling it at a space yard is rumored to leave resources. Some descriptive texts in empire policy suggest this. It is just hard to verify whether it actually works.

Also, I constantly hunt pirates, and killing pirate installations sometimes gives the position of a derelict ship. Send a little fleet outfitted for boarding, and in the rare case the derelict ship turns out to be a pirate in disguise, I get that ship anyway.

Late game you could board legendary pirate and Shakturi ships for some more opportunities to disassemble ships for tech.

I never board mining bases, since, more than anywhere else, I prefer those to be of my own designs. Retrofitting alien mining stations is just too painful.

The regeneration period of boarding pods isn't much of an issue. If those are empty, I either don't board, or I have to delay the attack in some way. The ability to get an alien ship with superior tech here and there is just a nice bonus.

The real problem is that boarding pods are dead weight in cases where boarding isn't desired or not the main goal. They're just like energy collectors in that way, taking up space that could otherwise be dedicated to more combat efficiency.

I deal with that by having boarding fleets and normal combat fleets, and they are strictly separated. The boarding fleets are little strike forces, just strong enough to deal with the occasional derelict battleship (at least this is the goal, early game it's too ambitious). They also take over pirate marauders here and there. The main combat forces do not have any assault pods.

Jacob/Lee -> RE: To board or not to board.. (12/21/2013 8:06:56 PM)

I use assault pods to "borrow" freighters belonging to pirates and independents. I tend to arm most of my ships with assault pods for that reason as well as taking out a ship that hyperjumps. Break the shield, board with assault pods, the ship hyperjumps out and is captured mid-flight to be scrapped or whatever. This isn't terribly useful once you have hyperjump stalling technology, but it works. You always have them on the off chance you're attacked by a ship with better tech than you, too.

Aside from those, the only reason to have assault pods is to fight off boarding actions from other ships.

DWA86 -> RE: To board or not to board.. (12/25/2013 5:42:58 AM)

I noticed once I put 4 boarding pods on my escorts pirates ceased to be an issue. Im still experimenting to see if pods will net me any worthwhile tech gains in my wars

ReadeB -> RE: To board or not to board.. (12/26/2013 2:53:04 PM)

Not sure what the calculation is, but I noticed that scraping my defensive bases brought big $$$.

Wonder if you could extend your finances by capturing and scrapping for $?

I haven't played as a pirate yet.
